Colorado might not be horrible this year

Submitted by crg on
There were a few decent games last night, but I was interested in the Colorado / Colorado State game. It is normally a good rivalry game (called the Rocky Mountain Showdown and has been going since 1893) and we host Colorado in two weeks. CSU is a medium/upper tier Mountain West team and nearly split the series with Colorado in the past few years - definitely not a cupcake. I expected to see a charged, close game. Instead, Colorado rolled them 44-7 and had some good moves (a one handed near-touchdown reception by a WR was very nice). We might have a real game on our hands when the come to town. Harbaugh will have the guys ready of course, but it might be an interesting matchup. EDIT:. Just saw another similar thread - moms can delete if needed.

They looked good last night on both sides of the ball.  They have been lousy the last few years but they were very young.  They are now experienced and look like a good opponent. Lindsay is a good RB - not very big but very quick.  I was most impressed with Sefo Liufau their QB.  He looked very good throwing the ball and running.  Very poised.

Not sure how bad CSU is, but the Buffs should make for a competitive game in two weeks and should not at all be considered a gimme.

They have been lousy for the last decade with 2005 being their last winning season.  So I too watched their game last night and said, "YES, a force to be reckoned with."  Not that The Harbaugh would allow it, but it was always my inner fear that the team would sleep walk through the first three games and not be mentally prepared for B1G season.  As things just became a bit more interesting, those fears are subsiding.

As a side note, I wouldn't take much from UCFs 0-12 season from last year.  They've been much better than that in seasons previous and I'm sure their new and relatively young head coach, Scott Frost, will have them ready for Michigan next week.

The real question is what Colorado will do in Pac-12 play. That's the only way they can help Michigan. Would be nice to have a win over a ranked (at the end of the season) non-conference opponent. Hard to see them getting more than five wins in conference, though --playing at USC, Stanford, and Oregon. Even a halfway decent team is probably looking at 7-5 if they lose to Michigan. More likely 5-7.

So they have a lot at stake in Ann Arbor. The first game in a brutal away schedule. Weird sort of trap game for Michigan.

Doubt they come close to that against UM. Less than 6 hours now until we get our first real look at at the Wolverines. That's all I can concentrate on right now. Until then...

Yes, I was impressed. They looked sharp in many aspects.

Can't understand why people around here are looking at Colorado, Wisconisn, and PSU as easy, automatic wins. I expect every opponent's "A game", and it's going to be one tough battle after another.

It's good to see that everyone is already worried about Colorado.

Colorado was bad last year and probably is a little better.

CSU was worse than Colorado last year and is probably a little worse this year.

We were good last year, MUCH better than both of them and are MOST LIKELY even better.

Moral of story. Not worried about Colorado.

Nobody is worried about an upset before it happens - that's why it's an upset. Let's worry now so everyone is sharp and focused for the game (the TEAM will be sharp and ready because of Harbaugh, the crowd need to show up early and make their presence felt - and why not when it's the only power OOC game?)

Colorado State had a winning 7-6 record last year while Colorado had a losing record of 4-9 including a loss to Hawaii.  True enough, Colorado did beat CSU last year, but it is a rivalry game that, unlike others I could mention, has been two sided and competitive for the last 15 years.

I think it is fair to say that Colorado was slightly better than CSU last year.

4-9 in the Pac12 is at least equivalent to 7-6 in the Mountain West.  Colorado won head to head, and computer polls like Sagarin give the slight edge to Colorado.

If Colorado is for real, it will be a good early season test. They sure looked good last nigh. I think we should be fine, but I never take any opponent for granted and, for good reason.  Ask Tennessee about easy opponents or MSU.  And we all remember games over the last decade most Michigan fans would rather forget.

Harbaugh will have Michigan prepared for Colorado.

Looks like a great day to start the season.  Based on what I saw at the MDen yesterday morning, lots of people are going to be decked out in new Nike gear.

While I don't think we'll have too much trouble with Colorado, I'm fine with having a respectable win on the resume.

Also, Colorado State isn't anything special, but the Mountain West is actually a pretty decent conference.

Just like they were in the late 80's and early 90's they have been hitting Southern California hard the last two years in recruiting and its starting to pay off. Add that to there new facilities, nutrition programs and coaches it won't be long before they are right in the mix of things in the Pac 12, same goes for Arizona St.

I've been saying CU is a tougher team than people think. UM should still win, but it's a team that can absolutely go to a bowl this week and put it on the face of teams.

If M looks as good as it is anticipated, it will not matter how well CU play. We will be in a good shape. It is good to have a decent game before B1G play.

Harbaugh loves competition. We need to play good teams of all styles. A better CU running the spread is a great test for Michigan. Bring your best to A2 in 2 weeks CU. Harbaugh will assure we respond with our best.

for Michigan.  Much like BYU last year, they are a up-tempo, spread passing team with a somewhat mobile QB.  Our CB's are game to shut down some plus athletic WR's.  They can run, but fully confident this DL can shut down the COLORADO running game.  Also, fans were worried about BYU before that game, as they were surprisignly impressive (sound familiar to another Rocky Mountain team we are all starting to talk about?).  As we've seen with Jim Harbaugh, we've eliminated the dumb losses on our schedule, and Colorado would constitute that.

With that said, this Colorado team has slowly made progress year after year.  They were a team with players consistently in the right position to make plays the last few years, but just lacking the athletes to finish those plays (especially defensively).  They were a touchdown from beating Utah, Arizona, USC, and UCLA (also, Hawaii).  Win two of those five, and they make a bowl last year.  Incremental progress probably sees them do that, and significant progress sees them go 8-4.  Definitely not a slouch (just enough of one to not make me lose sleep over the next two weeks).

That rivalry has a history of being odd. There have been good CSU teams that have been pounded by horrible Colorado teams, horrible CSU teams that have played good Colorado teams down to the wire and close games when both are dumpster fires. They rarely tell how good either squad will eventually be. But that performance was still enough to get my attention. Colorado's uptempo no huddle was crazy. They were ready to go for the next snap just seconds after the tackle. They did have a problem fumbling the ball but they went full Tennessee and recovered all but one. They even fumbled into the endzone for a score ala the Vols. CSU looked god awful but that game in two weeks certainly doesn't look as easy as we thought it would be yesterday.
