College influence leaking into the N-F-L
So I'm watching NFL games today and I'm shocked (shocked!) at the amount of so called "gimmicks" being employed by NFL coaches... so far i've seen:
- Green Bay run the pistol formation TB dive with Ahman Green
- Miami run not only the wildcat, but speed option and spread option looks with Pat White at QB
- New England continue to run what looks to me to be the Mike Leach offense
What's next? The Giants running Nebraska Power I Triple Option? The Lions going all Navy and running wing-T? MGoBloggers, log your NFL using gimmick offense instances here... could it be that NFL coaches are finally breaking out of their conservative WestCoastProSetOffTackleCounterTrey offensive molds? Blasphemy I tell you! Blasphemy!

Patriots aren't running the Air Raid. If they based their entire offense on the shallow drag they'd end up with a lot of dead receivers.
Can someone please explain the advantage of the pistol formation to me? I don't really get what it helps you do.

I think the QB has the benefit of the shotgun to read the defence/get ball out quicker and it also allows the RB to get more of a head of steam toward the LOS when running the ball.

Idk how much that helps the QB out, but that's probably why they do it. Thanks.

Shotgun helps the QB by allowing them to see the entire field, adding some time before blitzes get to him, etc. but doesn't allow the RB to gain momentum before taking the handoff. The goal is to give you all of the advantages of shotgun and a single-back/I formation handoff.
