College Gameday Thread

Submitted by Jeff on
For anybody who wants to discuss the goings-on of College Gameday. I'll get it started off with this: Chris Fowler just proposed the idea of putting the Big 12 South and ACC Coastal together as a conference and the Big 12 North and the ACC Atlantic. If they did that, and Boise St joined the MWC there is no doubt that the North Atlantic Conference would become a (bad) mid-major and the MWC be a BCS conference. Would the South Coast be the best conference? Possibly... Edit: They're in Colorado Springs for the Army @ Air Force game in honor of Veteran's Day (which is this Wednesday I think)

Are we all ok with Desmond's color scheme today or does it appear to be more a reflection of his love for Notre Dame than for Michigan. It seems all Desmond conspiracy theorists of old can breathe easy. I guess he does still like his alma mater (assuming his suits do provide the insight to his soul people have suggested in the past).

There are multiple comments about Desmond's wardrobe every Saturday. Is this an inside joke? I don't have a problem with it, I just think its funny that people care so much about Desmond's wardrobe. Why not critique Fowler's tie color or Corso's blazer?

Because they're not former Michigan players who are clearly showing that they no longer like Michigan by happening to wear a lime green tie the day we play Michigan State whose school color is a completely different shade of green. To answer your first question, I would say that this was an "inside" joke about the previous comments. Those earlier posts, I am not sure at all. Also, when Kirk said something to Desmond about putting on a coat, he should have asked why he didn't go with a cape.

Agreed. I've heard there is a tribe of rivals or scout board members, I can't remember which, that believes Desmond wears opposing team colors as a statement against Michigan. Others here have conjectured that it could be superstition of wearing opposing teams' colors on gameday, or maybe it's just nothing. He's worn opposing team colors ~5 times this season that I've noticed. That doesn't make me think it's a regular pattern, but rather a meaningless superstition that he forgets some weeks. I also wonder if the first poster in this thread forgot the sarcasm font. Not sure.

Just to get this straight, people don't think Desmond is wearing the other teams colors? He for sure is. I don't know why or if it means anything. But this is 5 weeks in a row. I personally don't care what he wears or what he thinks. But there is no arguing he is wearing the other teams colors every week since MSU.

How Desmond Howard got that gig in the firs place. Am I the only one who thinks that Boise State's victory over Oregon carries enough weight to put them ahead of Oregon? I'm not a fan of this BCS thing--it's an exclusive club leading to nothing more than a beauty pageant IMO. Boise State deserves to be ahead of Oregon as long as they stay undefeated--they proved it on the field if you axe me.

While I understand "Oregon played a harder schedule blah blah" argument. I think there is something to be said for going undefeated and and beating a 1 loss (badly) that everyone says is better. I also thinks its incredibly hypocritical when the media bashes Iowa for having a close game to open the season with UNI and then turn around and say the Boise loss shouldn't matter for Oregon b/c its a different team now. Keep in mind that Oregon also got all they wanted from Purdue at home (and Purdue hasn't exactly lit up the scene, hopefully that will continue today).

On College Football Live yesterday there was a segment with Kirk and Desmond in front of an F-15 and at the end Kirk said they were about to go for a ride up in the plane. Think we'll get to see the footage? It would probably be in the next half hour. Speaking of planes, the flyover that they showed at the beginning looked really lame on television. Some things are way better in person. Flyovers, hockey, baseball, sex...

does desmond have the best resume of any college football commentator? heisman, super bowl mvp. corso was a pretty mediocre coach, yes? herbie was also not so great as a qb. perhaps spielman compares.

but I believe he was a great player back in his day. He played both sides of the field (as he will often tell you in NCAA10)and IIRC had the FSU interception record for a long time (I think Deion broke it). But yeah I would say Desmond has the best resume, of that bunch. Best overall of the ESPN crew is probably Bob Griese, member of both pro and college HOF.

flutie and robert smith as contributors, both have decent resumes i suppose. holtz too. don't know anything about mark may's skills, jesse palmer, schlabach, or gilmore. in other news, i saw that adrian karsten died a few years back - not that i missed him, just figured i would have remembered him being gone. weird circumstances.

traditional since, I think he was pre-med or something along those lines. On track to be a doctor at one point, or at least that's what I recall. Howard's football resume is pretty tough to beat, Flutie probably comes the closest in my mind. Gutty player and I was always imprssed he could do what he did in the NFL at his size. I'd forgotten karsten passed away. That guy was large--I walked passed him on one occasion and he seemed giant to me.

And with approximately 50 USAFA cadets and grads as family and friends, I can assure you that the code of conduct for the cadets will squelch any quality signs. The men and women of the academy carry themselves with competence, maturity, and dignity, three attributes that we all know are the opposite of funny. I think it was Muggeridge who said: "Good taste and humor are a contradiction in terms, like a chaste whore."

It's pretty funny flipping to BTN and seeing the commentators set up in Happy Valley. There are maybe 15 people standing behind them and hundreds just walking by, not even noticing them. I am grateful for the BTN for showing me a lot of games, but they have a long way to go.

So true. Their studio is really nice. I was there a couple weeks ago. The network has a lot of potential. A good studio, built-in audience for football and basketball games, they came out of the gate in very nice HD. I'll admit they have some issues, but I think it will keep improving and turn into a very nice network. Their Football Four Pack is a great addition this year. Although I haven't watched the Sights & Sounds show which seems the lamest of the 4.

"I have a deal with my wife. I'm allowed to watch as much porn as I want as long as I'm working out." Not to derail the thread (in which I have about half the posts - geez I need to get off my laptop) but I thought the baseball playoffs were pretty good this year. I don't watch many regular season games on TV but I watch during the playoffs. Even though everyone hates the Yankees, I liked their 3-pitcher rotation and you could tell during the ALCS they really wanted game 5 in order to get those extra days of rest for their pitchers.
