College Football "Official" Rankings

Submitted by alum96 on

I would probably wait 2 weeks before starting the playoff rankings but I get it from a media hype perspective.  Here is the first week's list:

  1. Miss State
  2. FSU
  3. Auburn
  4. Ole Miss
  5. Oregon
  6. Alabama
  7. TCU 6-1
  8. MSU 7-1
  9. Kansas State 6-1
  10. Notre Dame 6-1
  11. Georgia 6-1
  12. Arizona 6-1
  13. Baylor 6-1
  14. Arizona State 6-1
  15. Nebraska 7-1
  16. Ohio State 6-1
  17. Utah 6-1
  18. Oklahoma 5-2
  19. LSU 7-2
  20. West virginia 6-2
  21. Clemson 6-2
  22. UCLA 6-2
  23. East Carolina 6-1
  24. Dyuke 6-1
  25. Louisville 6-2
  26. Michigan ;) :P

Biggest surprise is ND at #10 with only loss on road to #1/#2ish FSU , in a game they could have won.  MSU got blown out vs Oregon for their loss and is ranked higher than ND - ND also beat Purdue and UM by wider margins than MSU so it tells me games vs common opponents dont matter much to the committee.

Ole Miss in over Bama is interesting - says head to head really matters. OSU so low is fun (and behind Nebraska) - they have a bad loss and have not played anyone in the top 25, so SOS does matter which I like.

Of course this will all change in a few weeks esp as the SEC west ravages each other.

Eastern, true there was nothing that they could do... but it was still odd that he said what he said and then went out and put up 73... if you look at all of their games after Oregon, you will see that they were blowing out or beating teams handley and then in 2 of those games (Nebraska and Purdue) they let them back into the game by trying to put the final "stake" in them instead of just runnnig out the clock and moving on with life...

If only two conferences are represented, with 3/4 teams coming from the SEC, this is victim to the same media bias problems that the old system was. You can't claim they're the best if they don't have to play the best of other conferences.

Obviously it will look different at the end of the season, but this is infuriating.

Yes and no.  Miss. St. didn't beat anyone outside of the SEC, and Ole Miss is being helped by beating Boise St. in a really ugly game to start the year.  My issue with all the SEC--ness of these polls is that it creates a feedback loop where you get a "big" win over another highly-rated opponent and then they get a "good" loss because they lost to a team that just beat a ranked opponent.  Hell, people are still talking up A&M despite them not beating anyone except South Carolina because they've been beaten by good teams, even though those losses were epic.

A lot of ranked teams every year, bowl game record in recent years, recruiting, and just the passion/stadium atmospheres. A lot of schools around the country can match many schools in the SEC but I just think the overall package of the conference is the best. LSU is the 6-7 best SEC team and there is no doubt in my mind they would win the BIG. Other conferences just don't have the gauntlet year in year out.

You can bring up bagmen and whatnot, but the fact remains they are the best conference. The PAC 12 and Big 12 are very good and the gap of the SEC may not be that wide, but I believe they are the clear #1 and the BIG and ACC are not even close.

to have 3 one-loss-or-better teams

The regular season features five regular season games among the present five SEC one-loss-or-better teams:

  • MSSt @ Bama
  • MSSt @ OleMS
  • Aub   @ OleMS
  • Aub   @ GA
  • Aub   @ Bama

Assuming all of these present five one-loss-or-better teams win all of their games versus other competition produces the maximum number of one-loss-or-better outcomes.

The above 5 games produce 2^5 = 32 scenarios.  Taking the results against the SEC tiebreaker rules,

   http://www.secrant.com/news/105535/50260523/New-SEC-Tiebreaker-For-2014…

the Western representative in the SEC conference championship game for each scenario can be found.  The Eastern conference champion is assumed to be Georgia.  If it's anybody else, it's not a one-loss team.

Then, adding another game in each of the 32 scenarios (the Eastern(GA) vs Western Representative) gives 64 total scenarios. Of these 64 scenarios

# of One-loss-or-better Teams Occurrences
0 6
1 35
2 23
3 0

No reason that an Ole Miss team that just lost to mediocre LSU should be on over an Oregon team that has a win over a top 10 team and whose only loss is to a top 15 team.  They still control their own destiny, so fine I guess, but 3 of top 4 being SEC West teams just defeats the purpose of a playoff honestly.  I know, I know, it'll change, but still. Stupid

So this seems pretty similar to the just having an AP Poll decide the top 4. Arizona beat Oregon at Oregon and is a couple missed FG's from still being undefeated(And 1 Hail Mary away from 2 losses), yet is ranked 6 spots below them?

Ole Miss in over Bama is interesting - says head to head really matters?

ND not being in a conference will finally hurt them. Will be interesting to see where MSU ends up if they win out. Could still be left out if the SEC doesn't completely hurt itself with everyone losing to each other.

this is a HUGE advantage for them, they are very well aware that if they joined the B1G their chances of winning the B1G is less than them getting to the playoff as an independent.  The psuedo alignment with the ACC is a fucking joke.  It is also the worst football conference in the country ... yeah I know FSU, but really FSU is 1 guy at QB and if they lose him - they are a run of the mill top 20 team.

Fuck nd ... so glad to see the #10!  Would love to see BK's face right now !!!

Go Blue!

Yah I'm glad to see them at #10 as well.  Where did you guys end up or are you still trying to find it?  And do you really think that ND was scared of joining the BIG?  MSUs lone loss that kept them from playing in a NC game last year was to...?

Currently the BIG has MSU who got bombed in Autzen and OSU who lost to a very bad VT team.  Everything else is just gum on your shoe.

and they are still scared to join the B1G.  ND has lost to Michigan 4 of the last 7, and we haven't sniffed a B1G championship since 2006.  It's obvious that the new playoff committee is valuing qulaity wins, and every conference champion will have a quality win by winning their conference championship.

So Sparty got "bombed" after leading at halftime huh, hey phork - dig out that ND / Alabama title game if you want to see what getting bombed is really like!  Whahahahaha

Go Blue!

i think ND would be the best team in the big ten this year and next year.. also i doubt they are scared.  the big ten is so weak nowadays.

plus based on who they put on their schedule, im pretty sure they arent scared.

usc, fsu, asu, louisville, michigan, stanford, unc.. i know a lot of those teams underperformed this year - but they didnt know that would be the case when they scheduled the games.

i think they got jipped on these rankings and i think it has more to do with the committee trying to force them into a conference than the committee saying notre dame isnt good.

Anyone who says this preserves the sanctity of the regular season is on drugs. There are THREE TEAMS FROM ONE DIVISION. Not conference, division. What is the point of winning that division? They might as well just not have an Egg Bowl this year.

It's quite easy and I imagine will happen in 3-5 years. Have an eight team playoff where the champions from the Power 5 conferences get a spot, the highest ranked team from the Gang of Five conferences gets a spot, and then two at-large teams. This makes the conference seasons of the utmost importance and incentivized 10 game conference seasons to determine a true conference champion. If one of the two non conference games is a cream puff them your chances for an at-large spot are lessened. I'm sure there are disadvantages to this format but it's basically adding one more game for a few teams. I do think 16 is too much but 8 is just right while 4 is too few; call me Goldilocks.

Oregon has a good win-loss resume, and perhaps that is the only thing that should matter. But, their defense is just not good.

I'm heartened that Ole Miss is ahead of Alabama.  As they're saying on ESPN, the latest game doesn't/shouldn't have the same impact as it does in the polls.
