Colin Cowherd: "Michigan not a raucous environment"

He says ND will come into the big house and win, citing Michigan's lack of a rowdy environment and basically saying Michigan Stadium is not much of a home field advantage.

For everyone that will be there, we finna bring it..

Go Blue! Lets kick some Irish Ass and leave 'em looking like..

maybe I was wrong about their fans

Nicknames...

I know using insulting variations of people's names on mgoblog is treated by some as being on the level of breaking wind in the Vatican, but I think an exception should be made for someone referred to by many as "Colin Cowturd."

So this wont be popular

So this wont be popular around here, but what about Michigan Stadium not being that loud is so egregious ?  I've been going to games for 10 years (5 as a student) and there have been loud moments but this place is just not consistently rambunctious.  There are a bevy of reasons for this that are well known, it is what it is.  Would I love it to be louder?  Absoulutely but until we all decide to take out an ad in AnnArbor.com or something and tell people to loosen their vocal chords we are preaching to the wrong choir.

Also, I dont understand why Cowherd gets such a bad rap around here...  For the most part, the guy just tells it like it is and whenever we get any criticism from anyone (constructive or not) we just blow up and start crying about what a loser the guy is.  I am not talking about real baffoons like Rosenberg, Valenti or Sharp who are obviously just begging for attention and limelight.  Cowherd & Van Pelt are two of just a small handful of radio personalities who aren't turrible and actually make rational points.  .

My guess

My recollection might be a bit off, but part of why Cowherd is unpopular around here is due to an incident circa 2006 where he ripped off material from the MZone blog and used it on his show unattributed.

Apparently there was more to

Apparently there was more to it than that.  He ripped off material and when called out, he was a complete tool about it.

Cowherd

does not make rational points. You must have missed where he said that John Wall will never be an NBA superstar because he didn't have a father growing up. That is pretty typical of the level of logic used in his arguments.

Cowherd is a tool, but...

...he's kinda right.  I loved my 4 years of attending games at Michigan Stadium, but never experienced a raucous environment until I got to Kyle Field.

I'm not going to say I always

I'm not going to say I always love the atmosphere at the Big House, but sometimes it's amazing.  Check out these blue hairs getting into it:

Unfortunately this clip cuts short the mayhem, but the student section on that play - only difference to your clip is a lack a towels and an excess of people jumping like its a basketball game.

Can the mods start putting

Can the mods start putting posts on Cowherd in the Sharp Zone? I'm pretty sure every Cowherd post on this board is essentially the same as every attempted Drew Sharp post.

aloooot of people listen to Cowherd including myself so just not listening to him is kind of a lame answer....we do need to bring the noise, you cant say that you havent heard that shit before.....we have a chance on primetime to shut him the fuk up and bring everything we got. Because like I said alot of people listen to him so if we can be loud as hell we will prove him wrong to aloooot of people......

Nothing like breeding

Nothing like breeding resentment in the seating area by planting people to be intentionally inconsiderate.

I'll never understand the notion that the only way to be loud and intimidating is to be standing up the entire game, even if every single person around you isn't.

When would you rather be loud?

when your sitting down or standing up? Maybe it's just me, but I enjoy the whole atmosphere more when people are standing. Just having a little fun, didn't mean to upset

If you can't

stand for 3 hours, then don't come to the fucking game. People who complaim about having to stand at sporting events piss me off to no end.

I'm not complaining about

I'm not complaining about standing up at a sporting event.  I can, and I do when it's appropriate to do so.

I'm complaining about people who are so inconsiderate that they completely ignore everyone around them, feign deafness when asked to sit down, and then get confrontational about their "right" to stand up and block those behind them.  I've seen it happen at almost every game I've attended over the last three years, almost concurrently with the "Up in back!" phenomenon emerging in the blogosphere.

If you are in row 25 and no one in front of you or behind you is standing, yet you are, you're doing it wrong.  A little consideration is a good thing.  It's called being an adult.

It's useless though.  Last

It's useless though.  Last week, I tried talking to a blue haired fellow next to me and he just stared at me and didn't say a word.  I don't understand how that makes going to a game exciting.  I understand if you don't want to stand or yell but at least enjoy the game and converse about what is going on.

Me:  Oh man, nice block by Lewan (talking it) -- did you see him?

That guy: .......(crickets).......

Me:  Ok, cool.  Nice talk.

Rats, you sussed me out.  All

Rats, you sussed me out.  All these years I've attended the U, donated to the U, gone to non-revenue sports games, married into a U-M family, bought U-M swag, imbued wolverine fandom into my offspring . . . finally, the truth comes out, you have discovered my ugly secret.  Yes, I am not a true fan, because I have been known to sit down within U-M stadium.

I thought I was keeping the charade up, but I blew it the moment ass met bleacher. Can't get one past you.

Ok, I completely agree

and understand what you mean by that. If your blatinly standing by yourself like a jackass sit down. I mean when there are groups of people standing everyone else should feel they should stand too. I can see how my comment would make you think I am that jackass lol. But I can assure you I don't and get irritated by those people your taking about as well..

and this is why the argument

and this is why the argument i had last night about florida (not the school part but the fan part) is correct and the other guy was wrong.  you don't have this happening at other colleges, at least not to this extent.  people who sit at other college games are in the minority, and guess what, being in the majority makes you right.  the correct way to view a football game is to stand the entire time, the majority does it that way and the majority always wins

I mean he kind of has a point. At least he did, but I think the suites help keep noise in. Plus hopefully the night atmosphere adds to it.

Well..

Cowherd is right that Michigan is not really a raucous environment.

But the guy is still a tool.

Cowherd has a HUGE...

Man Crush on Brady! So I naturally assumed he also had some respect for Brady's Alma Mater. Cowherd appears to like traditional powerhouses (Yes, we've been down a few years, not that bad tho) and he seems like a conservative kind of guy that would appreciate the 'Michigan Way's'. That being said - I NEVER hear him say anything positive about Michigan's Football program.

Today was even more ridiculous. I listen to him at work on the radio everyday, and I've never called in or tried contacting him, but I almost did. He said all the things mass media pundits do when its apparent they only read 'snippets' of info about teams and really never take the time to even watch the first game without throwing out there 'expert analysis'. Cowheard said DRob will struggle because he's still getting used to Al Borges 'Pro Style' Offense and being under center will be tough for him. Hu?? Clearly Cowheard wasn't interested in finding out that we ran 70% of offensive plays from shotgun and DRob will still run, run, run when he wants to.

Then the ususal garbage stuff: Stadium is big, not loud, our D still sucks, etc...

Couldn't have said it better.  110,000+ should be louder than they are on a weekly basis.  However, he loses me when he says that's why ND will win.

"finna"?

He had to be right about something once in his life. It's not the loudest.  Yet somehow we've still won more games than anyone else ever, so I don't know if that is a reason to predict a win or a loss.

I call bullshit

Go to the main page and watch the last clip of the game--the "Toussaint bounces like whoah" play from the UFR.  People are pissed that the game has been postponed and are sensing another postponement.  Michigan is on offense and I'm sure the stadium is no longer packed.  Listen how loud it is, again this is while Michigan is on offense.

I wouldn't call Michigan a raucous environment either and they are 11-11 at home the last 3 years also, but this is a new era and a huge chance for a statement game early in Hoke's tenure.

I think he is giving way too much credit to the fans affect on the outcome of the game. Besides that, Michigan was able to win in South Bend last year.

i have been to both michigan

i have been to both michigan stadium and penn state to watch a michigan game and i must say that penn state was alot more hostile.  I still remember the guy a few rows behind me at the big house telling me to sit down when Denard would break a big run.  I wanted to tell him that if wanted to sit and watch the game he should have stayed home, besides the student section at michigan it was almost like a golf tournament (golfers cheering).    we have the largest stadium in the country and we need to turn it into a homefield advantage.

I disagree

If we could get half of what comes out of the student section in the rest of the stadium, the place would be rockin'.

I might get hammered for this but after the pregame pump up video, they should put together a variety of clips from througout the years of people saying how Michigan Stadium is quiet. Honestly, I think it will piss people off and cause the place to implode.

South Carolina plays a clip of Corso saying that South Carolina won't win the SEC ever. The place erupts.

Michigan Stadium can be plenty loud

when it wants to be.  Perhaps more of the blue-haired senior citizens, you know the "Awww jeeze, these damn kids, I can't see! Harriet!" have decided to watch the football games from the comfort of their living rooms.  I think it's louder now than before.

My worry is that  a couple big Rees to Floyd connections for 6 will probably take the UM crowd out of the equation early.  Get a lead on Michigan and things get crickety.  I hope I'm 100% wrong about this.

Hey Colin ...

last night on B1G Network they showed the 2009 Michigan victory over nd.  Perhaps Colin forgot that nd is 1 - 5 at the Big House since 1997.   Thar's right they are 1-4 in the last 5 games played at either stadium and 1 - 5 at Michigan. This looks very much like a home field advantage!   Hmmm ... 1 - 6 anyone?

Go Blue!

Michigan Stadium will never

Michigan Stadium will never be as load as Autzen or some of the others, but when the game is big and the crowd is into it, it can be quite defeaning.

As for Cowherd, so what?  He is a radio/tv personality trying to stir up talk and calls, so I'm not surprised he would make such assertions.  He's a passionate sports fan but also one who is not opposed to putting his derrier on his head to protect against the elements.  In other news, water wet, sky blue, no politics at MGoBlog, etc.

Key Play

Just wait until ND hears the intimidating sound of hundreds of sets of keys rattling on critical downs!  That tinkling sound will bring the Irish to their knees (or at least have them genuflecting).

Put another way, I hate to admit it, but Cowherd's got a point.  The stadium can get loud at times, but "raucous" is not how I'd describe the scene.  I'm guessing the night game will be louder than most home games, but nothing that would make an SEC fan look up from their Jeremiah Weed.

According to my American Heritage dictionary, raucous is

1. Rough-sounding; harsh. 2. Boisterous, disorderly.

In the context of athletic events, definition #2 is more relevant. Michigan Stadium can verge on boisterous at occasional moments, but I'd never call us disorderly.

That doesn't mean we can't be damn loud, though.

Home Field Advantage

is overrated in college football and in most sports. I think basketball is the only sport where it matters. Did home field advantage work for ND last week?

To get in the BCS picture you need to win at home and on the road.

"Home Field Advantage" is a dumb topic that dumb talking heads bring up when they have nothing else to say.

Eh, Cowheard is partially right.

It isn't really a racous environment. Not like some SEC schools who are always always always loud as f%^k.

But he's dead wrong in saying THAT's why ND will win. Michigan fans are nitpicky...but they DO know how to get loud. And he completely ignores a big point...regardless of crowd noise, the Big House is a very intimidating stadium, it knows how to rally behind its team when it matters the most. And besides, I'm not sure how the Big house WON'T be loud for its first night game ever against a rival.

Of course, if ND takes an early lead and holds onto it...then that's a whole different issue.

But I highly doubt lack-of-crowd-noise will be anything resembling a key factor in the outcome on Saturday.

Cowherd is a blowhart

I think Cowherd says crap like this just to get people talking.  He knows nothing about sports is only on T.V. because he pisses people off and then we watch to see what idiotic thing he says next.  He rips off tons of peoples radio bits and articles and give no credit.  I can't wait for the day when he is cancelled.

Isn't a cowherd more appropriate for a school with a proud

tradition of animal husbandry, like MSU, for example?

I'm not quite blue-haired, but I'm closer in age to that group than to college students. Over the years, I have sat in almost every (open) area of the stadium, including the student section. In all that time, I have never been bothered by someone standing, probably because I'm taller than average when I stand, and I stand when something exciting happens, such as a football game. I have also never had anyone ask me to sit down, probably because I see no need to stand in front of someone through the entire game, student section  excluded, of course. I am also proud of the fact that that the couple next to me at the WMU game left with their very young daughters because of the heat and threatening weather, not because of raucous fans. Cowherd be damned. As a side note, I did not notice any  coolers with surprises inside either.

Not loud

I recently moved to Tennessee and attend their games (son is a graduate). These fans down south are so much louder than us. When the UT opponent is in a third down situation, the stadium erupts in even more noise. I attended the game Sat and, except for a few instances, only the students made noise. The other 90,000 need to stand up and make noise to give us the home field advantage all the time. (Good luck changing the UM stadium culture!)

Do you really want the

Do you really want the Michigan Stadium crowd to be like they are in the SEC? There are some college atmospheres that are loud and still collegiate, largely as a result of well organized, clever student sections (Penn State) or acoustics (Autzen) but the brand of hysteria they boast of in the SEC is not for me.

I'm actually proud that my school doesn't draw 80,000 to a spring game, like they do at Alabama.  Sorry, but at least try to pretend there's an academic institution attached to the football program.

No offense, but this is such

No offense, but this is such a Michigan fan point to make. Last time I checked, passion (iin this instance, loudness) for football and intelligence are not mutually exclusive (despite the fact that it seems that way). Also, what is the "brand of hysteria" that the SEC boasts? What does that even mean/how is this brand different than that of PSU, Oregon, etc.? There are plenty of things to make fun of regarding Alabama, but turning your nose up at the thought up a well-attended spring game is just kind of arrogant. As somebody who has lived down there, trust me when I say that there are a lot of things to make fun of them for, but loving their team enough to go to a spring game is far down the list.

Anyway, as a recent grad I'm dreading the day that I'll have to come back and start sitting outside of the student section. I remember being at the homecoming game in 2004 against Minnesota (the one with the game winning TD pass from Henne to Ecker), and a guy sitting in front of me sat stone-faced the entire game, not wearing a single article of Michigan clothing. Only at the very end of the game did I find out that he was a Michigan fan, which to be honest with you is ridiculous.

I've been to PSU, OSU, and Auburn, and all three were much louder. Sure, the Big House can get comparably loud on occasion (the stadium during the Toussaint run mentioned at some point in the thread was extremely loud on TV, but then again that loudness was mostly due to the weather and not any desire to "help" the team). Unfortunately, this is the way things are. If you don't want to stand all game, fine I guess (I can't even sit when I'm watching in the comfort of my own living room) but for goodness sake show some emotion, act like you want to be there. Anyway, it's all incredibly frustrating but there's really nothing anybody can do about it.

Its not a rauccous environment

I was in the 2nd row at the Wester vs UM game last week and I cant tell you how many times I was yelled at and cursed at and told to sit the F#[email protected] down by UM fans.  It was unbelievable.  One guy was threatening me if I didnt sit down when out D had its back against the wall in the redzone a few times.  I wont stop going to the games, but people like that need to stay home and watch where they dont have to yell at me to sit down while I'm trying to cheer on my team.  I paid just as much for those seats as they did and I have every right to stand and yell for our team.  That is what is wrong with the environment at our games.  And that is why people dog us as not having a loud stadium.  You cant tell me that 110,000 people cant get loud.  But they cant get loud with people in the stands like the people that were behind me.  That is what needs to change.

Whats he mean by "raucous"?

A few things come to mind:

1) It sucks to visit because the home fans are aggressive towards visitors. I believe we treat visitors very well in Ann Arbor and find places like Madison and Columbus difficult because of the shit people will do to you. People have gotten in my face and physical with me while at those games. No, I'm not instigating unless you call wearing a block M instigating.

2) Noise in the stadium. Camp Randall is louder and consistently loud. Mich Stadium can be loud but I have not heard it consistently loud. We sure could amp it up inside.

3) Standing? meh, doesn't mean raucous to me. To those who say you need to stand to be loud - not really. I enjoy standing and jumping as much as the next person but I can cheer just as loud sitting down. A side problem with standing the whole game is that my 4 year old blossiming Michigan fan son cant see the game at all. I have a problem with this and will avoid the home sideline and area close to the student section because I expect standing in those areas. If you want to stand the whole game, you can do so in your living room.

4) Screw Cowherd.

I was in the front row at graduation in 2010 and it got pretty loud when President Obama took the field. If 85,000 can make alot of noise 114,000 should be able to.

This is a tired old argument.

This is a tired old argument.  Noise is great and adds excitement, and can affect the visiting team in certain situations, but it isn't going to win this game for us.  We will win this games because we have better coaches and players, and our young players will be comfortable in the home environment.

Cowherd is as much a hack as the next one.

HELP

I usually only read the blog and never post. Just curious any word on a Maize Out for Saturday? I always wear maize to every game and so should everyone else that isn't in the student section.  Even if it is that terrible "off colored" maize really old people wear.  Thanks for the help.

After going to games at Ohio

After going to games at Ohio State, Penn State, and Michigan State, Michigan has undoubtably one of the most apathetic crowds in the nation, and it starts and ends with the student section. But let's just keep peddling the "Oh well the stadium is outdoors so the noise ecapes" line, because Autzen stadium's extra 5 degrees of angling off of the fields plan e more than makes up for having 60,000 less people there.

I'll take intelligible fans who know when to cheer over brainless, loud meatheads anyday.  No one complains about stadium noise when you're winning, so after this year hopefully that nonsense won't be brought up again.

I hate the fact that we're

I hate the fact that we're labeled as not loud; it bugs me to no end.  All of my years as a student, I did everything I could to make noises.

I am now an Alumnus who is not rich enough to buy season tickets, so I've been ushering the past two seasons.  Even in my "official capacity," I make noises.  Even if the old lady usher I work with claims the "clapping hurts my ears."

Night games are different

Night games are different critters.

Penn State has gotten a reputation as a rowdy intimidating place to play, and it's because of their night games.

I grew up in PA and had members of my family attend Penn State.  I've attended a number of PSU games.  I gotta tell you, a Penn State game at noon against a non-rivalry opponent is nothing special.  It's not like the night games at all.  It's situational.  Lots of passiveness and golf claps, just like at the Big House.

I have a feeling a Michigan night game will open some eyes.

Cowherd

Cowherd has said many times that people are way to invested in sports. He claims he is paid to be interesting, not to be right when it comes to sports. I do think he is interesting and brings up many points and topics that many other sports talking heads are scared to touch. He also intentionally pisses people off because drama brings him good ratings.
