Cole Huff down to Creighton and Iowa
Looks like Beilein & Co. may be banking a scholarship for 2015 after all. From Cole Huff's former AAU coach:
Cole Huff is down to Creighton and Iowa where he is visiting tomorrow he will be making a decision following the visit #Eleate
— clint parks (@Brotherhood05) May 1, 2014
I'm betting this means we didn't offer
Well, he never visited, so he never officially got an offer. I think the coaches just decided for whatever reason not to pursue him any further.
Well this was a nice punch in the crotch to end my Wednesday.
What happened? I thought he would fit in well, but I also can't say I'm disappointed about having another scholly for 2015. Seems like we're in on several good prospects, and could really use a 5 man.
Ehh not sure I can get that up or down over this. huff would have been a nice piece but less of a need in 2015 when he would be eligible to play for us
who is this clint parks character, sounds like a shady character to me
His AAU coach. Says it right in the originial post.
AAU sounds like a fake thing to me
Max must be getting a fifth year? I don't see how we need more than 2 ships.
Sviatoslav Mykhailiuk is deciding on college or pros by May 21. It would be dumb not to pursue.
I just get the feeling that we will be here in Spring of 2015 with a 3rd scholarship or more taking "sleepers" who will be far below Huff or Sviat. We will see.
I'd like to see someone post a list of 2015 targets with a summary of where Michigan stands with each to see if the pickings are really as slim as you keep implying. There seemed to be good news, for example, on the Grandstaff front today:
.@AustinGstaff1 will visit OSU this weekend, plus says he'll see Michigan, Florida, and Oregon for OV http://t.co/tP6zsgu7PQ @jerrymeyer247

I never said it was "slim" that we'd get 1 top guard but I don't see 2.
Why so negative on prospects for the 2015 class? It is April 2014 and you are saying in 12 months we will be stuck with 1 good players and the rest "sleepers"? That's an eternity in college bball. Right now there is plenty of time... and if you are a top notch 1, 2, and 5 you have a lot of potential playing time coming if you commit esp at the 2 and 5 (the 1 you will need to wait 12 months) - plus a great coaching staff especially for 1s and 2s.
I think getting Huff would have allowed Chatman to slide to 2 in 12 months to take over for LeVert so hence why this sort of sucks from my angle. Then Wilson starts at 4, Huff at 3, with Dawkins backing up at 3, and Donnal getting 5 minutes a night at 4 when not playing the 5. Also Chatman could do some 3/4 when MAAR is in the game - would have given us a lot of flexibility. (above scenario assumes Irvin is in the NBA and not sliding down to 2 to take over for LeVert in 12 months).
Anyhow, onward.
We will get a top notch guard bigman and guard. anything beyond that is reaching and we will wish we had pursued Sviat or Huff.
This helps us with Grandstaff:
Kevaughn Allen just verbally committed to Florida, per a source.

Well at this stage we are going to have anywhere from 2-4 scholarships to 2 top 100 players and another in the 100-150 range is pretty par for the course. Maybe we get 3 top 100s, Beilein deserves it with the track record he is building. Just seems weird for people to be calling #80 or #105 or something a sleeper nowadays, we are spoiled. If this was November 2014 and we had 0 kids in the class, ok that's the time to get worried but the next 6 months are prime time recruiting.
And I am not sure if the staff is up for it, but if we have 3 open scholarships next year and only 2 "top end" players come here, it might make a lot of sense to bank the 3rd since we are so damn young and the scholarships are so concentrated in so few classes. In Spike's class he will be the only senior around so that will only be 1 opening that year yet again by natural causes (early entries aside).

I don't see 2 top 150 guards coming in 2015.
The lower rated guy is going to pale in comparison to Sviat or Huff.
you're sweet on Sviat.
Is he aware of your man-crush?
No, but when he is avg 20 ppg at Virginia and we are taking a "sleeper" in the Spring of 2015 then you'll feel sick.
Here's a quote from the link in that Grandstaff tweet above:
"I'm hoping I can get them all in in May since school is almost out. If not I'll have to do it in the fall," Grandstaff told 247Sports.com. "I plan on taking those visits before I decide. I am still working on my fifth visit."
Once again, I think its 100 % ceertain we'd get 1 of Coleman, Davis, McQuaid, Brunson, Grandstaff, Dozier, Bacon, etc but not 2, which was perfect with LeVert most likely leaving,
I still think Sviat is something that should be pursued and he is better than ANY recruit we are after in 2015.
If we do have 3 scholarships, I'm almost certain the third guy won't be as good as Huff and definitely not Sviat.

UMhoops has a list of offers, targets, and "watch list" here.
I think the general consensus is 1 of the 2 Jalens is not really in play anymore (don't remember which one) and neither is Diamond Stone.

There is no way Max will get a fifth year unless at least one other player transfers.
I don't think there is anyway he goes to college. Kid is a complete stud tho and I think extremely young. Most colleges in the country would try basically anything to get him on campus.
It would suck if he went to Iowa
what happened?!
This will wind up being a good thing for us. Both Jalens and a PF are still possible. Huff...Wilson and Chatman would get quite crowded.
I'd bet everything we don't get two Jalens, let alone 2 top 100 guards.
More likely we get 1 top 100 guard + bigman and a "sleeper"
That's a bummer for me. For those asking for a 5 star to replace Huff well most of those 5 stars are going to be at Michigan for 2 years before they go pro (FR/SO)so you get 2 years of a 5 star who has to start from scratch or you could get a guy like this who walks in from day 1with 2 years of NCAA experience and no learning curve having redshirted an entire year and is a proven commodity who shoots 40% from the 3...and you get his JR/SR years.
And you don't send Jordan out there to speak to him face to face if you are not interested so the "Beilein must have cooled on him" idea makes no sense to happen within a span of 5 days ....esp when their camp said they are basically waiting on the McGary decision on whether to push on Huff.
This also puts the onus on Dawkins to be a serious player and not a backup piece for 5-10 minutes/game 2 years from now. Going to need 20 min or so out of him.
That said, I do hope this scholarship now goes to a 5 in 2015.... and it helps balance the scholarships out a bit more from year to year - 6 in 1 season is egregious.
And you don't send Jordan out there to speak to him face to face if you are not interested . . .
Of course, they had some level of interest. But coaches go out to visit players all the time face to face—and many of those players don't end up getting pursued any further.
Jordan visited Huff as part of the staff's vetting process. It's entirely possible that after completing their initial vetting, they decided not to pursue him.
April 30th, 2014 at 10:47 PM ^
Normally true but considering Huff's dad said they are waiting on Mitch's decision for MIchigan to - or not - move forward, that would mean he totally misunderstood Jordan's comments to him at their meeting. And Jordan is a very well spoken man so I doubt that to be true.
While hard to conceive, there are kids in this world who woull turn down Michigan - not every kid we miss on is because "Beilein cooled on him". This was a serious target from all the smoke signals. We'll never know I guess.
April 30th, 2014 at 11:20 PM ^
I never said anything about anybody other than Huff. You're the one who's making huge sweeping statements.
And I didn't get the sense from Sam Webb's recent comments that Huff was as serious a target as you're making him out to be.
Webb said on GBW the minute that Dawkins pledged that they would more than likely punt on Huff now in favor of class balance( having available scholarships for 15). My guess would be is that Huff would have been more of an option if Dawkins went to Dayton.
I am going to assume for the moment that this development means we are likely through with 2014 recruiting in basketball - this is just a guess, of course. At any rate, it is not a bad class at all without Huff, so we've done well for ourselves really. Banking a scholarship probably is the better move at this point given what the projected attrition might be.
I will say, it is nice to have the problems that Michigan does when it comes to hoops recruiting now.
he recruits, maybe Huff didn't make the grade. I would think that a player who decides to transfer because he doesn't like how he's being used might be a concern for a staff that likes interchangeable parts. Or maybe Huff ruled out Michigan for the same reasons. I don't consider this a big loss.
Now we'll have 3 open scholarships if Levert goes pro and Hatch gets a medical scholarship.
oh well..Good luk Papi
Too bad I thought Huff would be a good fit.
He is a terrible fit. I wish him the best unless he plays us.
I'm not sure why our athletic department is so allergic to transfers. I can't remember the last transfer we've had in the big 4 football, basketball, hockey, and baseball. It puts us at a disadvantage.
The last transfer in basketball was Laval Lucas-Perry and that didn't exactly work out, did it?
Given the success of the last few basketball seasons—accomplished without any transfers—I'm not buying that this has been a disadvantage at all.
Austin Panter?
Wasn't he a JUCO transfer?
April 30th, 2014 at 10:07 PM ^
Yeah, and he was in way over his head at Michigan. Bad signing by Lloyd.
April 30th, 2014 at 11:32 PM ^
His academics probably could have gotten him into Michigan even if he weren't a scholarship athlete. He went to JUCO because he didn't get any good offers coming out of HS, in part because he played in a 7 or 8 man league.
LLP didn't produce at AZ. Huff was productive.
You mean in the one semester he was at Arizona?
April 30th, 2014 at 10:10 PM ^
Doesn't matter. Huff is proven, LLP was not. I pray Huff doesn't Luke Hancock us at Iowa.
Banned on every board you visit and still post like an abrasive d-bag.
"Banned on every board you visit"—why does this not surprise me?
Except it isn't true and "umich" has a nasty habit of following me around and throwing tantrums because he disagrees like some creepy stalker.
You too can have an opinion and no we won't change each others but at least bring up to date information to back your opinion!
My opinion of you is based on your obnoxious posting style. Based on that, it would hardly be a surprise if you've been banned from other message boards.
I'm arrogant and elitist and I do not apologize. If more people were confident in their opinions than it wouldn't rub people the wrong way. I also source and provide info for any line of thought that I present and "haters" often can't even meet me halfway.
ps im only banned from 1 board and it is because "stalkers" love to initiate conflict but wilt when it is thrown back.
