Cold War I attendance record broken

Submitted by ecormany on

what good is breaking a world record when the new record is a lame duck anyway?  very little, apparently.  did anybody else notice that the opening game of the IIHF World Championship was played outdoors and broke the Cold War attendance record by about 3000?  it doesn't really matter, since it's going to be CRUSHED by the Big Chill attendance, which has reached the "ticket freeze" at 100K.  and they're planning to give every student with football tickets a seat on top of that.  i'm thinking we might break the overall Michigan Stadium attendance record at this point.  and i'm very excited about it.

so what is notable about that IIHF game?  well, Jack Johnson played in it.  has anyone got his comment on that experience, especially in light of the Big Chill coming up in December?

I am very curious as to how many people will actually attend.  From a revenue perspective it obviously doesn't matter if people buy tickets, think it's too cold (pansies) for an outdoor hockey game, and choose to watch from the comfort of their own frilly comforted beds.  Here's to hoping for good weather and an attendance of 113,000 (I believe the record is approximately 112,500 set at the 100th game).

To break the 2003 OSU game attendance mark (112,118), we'll need a huge number of press/visitor passes issued out.  I don't think that will happen.  The game will attract some media attention, but the phenomenon of outdoor hockey isn't quite as new as it was a decade ago.

Don't forget that the 100,000 number with tickets sold include next year's sophomores-seniors.  It does not include incoming Freshman so we are talking maybe another 8-10k.  It will probably still sellout but I doubt it will break a stadium record.  I would think the only record it will break is the hockey attendance record.

if The Big Chill does break the stadium attendance record, I think it will be short lived.  More people will come to the ND night game. I know I'll be there

Forgive me if people have posted on this and I missed it, but won't they be able to increase stadium capacity significantly since the hockey rink is so much smaller than the football field? This would be similar to basketball capacity being larger than hockey capacity at most major arenas. Are they going to add extra seats on the field? If so, 115k-120k is not outside the realm of possibility--crazy!!!
