Coaching Rumours/Potential Openings

Submitted by ghost on

Jason La Confora is reporting that Bill O'Brien is ready to return to the NFL and that the Vikings, Texans and possibly the Redskins are interested.  La Confora states that O'Brien's potential buyout is less restrictive this year and that PSU may face litigation if they attempt to collect a buyout from O'Brien because of he NCAA sanctions that were levied against them.

I would think his ability to get more out of less would be a huge draw. Look what Lane Kiffin did with all his great recruits...Will Muschamp...Mack Brown of late...it is the David Shaws, James Franklins, Art Briles that take the leftovers and win with them that are appealing

There is an extremely long list of coaches who were able to exceed expectations at smallers schools and were unable to get it done whent hey took bigger jobs.

Ever heard of Don Nelson?  He routinely got the most out of teams that weren't that talented, but was unable to get it down with some extremely talented Dallas teams.

are pretty similar. And their demeanors are close as well. It's a very fair comparison considering that Saban at MSU went: Both also started head coaching at a mid-level school in Ohio.

6-5-1. 6-6. 7-5, 6-6, 9-2 while winning a Citrus Bowl over Florida that last year. He lost his previous bowl games all by double digits and didn't make one in that 2nd 6-6 year.

MD: 7-6, 9-4, 6-7, 11-2, 11-3, 7-6, 12-1. Dantonio also lost his first few bowl games before winning the last 2 and now getting MSU to a BCS Bowl, which Saban never did in 5 years at the same school.

So yeah, fair comparison.

which you alluded to as reason for players not wanting to go to Dantonio.  I was saying Saban is not all smiles either.  If players can see what Dantonio has done at MSU with lower caliber guys, why wouldn't they think he could do it for them as well?

Also, I get what you're saying with Don Nelson, but basketball is so different from football, where one or two guys can control everything.  I am not sure Dirk was ever that guy.  Even when the Mavs beat the Heat, a lot of people would argue the Heat choked it away, particularly that collapse in Game 2 (I think) when they blew like a 15 point lead and lost home court.

Saban is a temendous recruiter.  There is no disputing that.

The key to what you said is "with lower calibar players".  Those are not the kind of players you would need to be able to recruit at Texas.  You need to be able to convince guys you can get them to the NFL.  Saban has a great track record of being able to do that.  Dantonio simply does not.

From  what we have been able to gather, Dantonio's players love him. Yes, these are kids that already have signed up to play for him, but from what the media report, Dantonio is a player's coach. What this would mean if he gets to fish in a larger talent pool, I dont know.

Who says he wants to come "home"?

That's something I've never been able to understand. I've lived in both places, and I'd never go back to Michigan. From my understanding, his wife isn't too excited about the thought either.

I think a much more logical move would be Narduzzi to PSU if O'Brien leaves for the NFL. He's a  Midwestern guy with strong B1G roots and Penn State is going to need to take a bit of a chance with this hire no matter which way they go given the sanctions they are uinder.

It's crazy... I'm reading rumours about Harbaugh as a possibility to Texas.

Not that I wholeheartedly believe them.

But the rumour claims that there is some tension between Harbaugh, that twit Jed York and the GM Trent Baalke, which I could see happening.  Jim doesn't seem to shy away from conflict... ever.

The one substantial part that i read said that Jim rejected a two-year extension.   To me that could mean something.

If he starts talking to Texas I say we jump in that race and start going after him as well.

Not sure why anyone would want to coach college football if they were successful in the NFL. In college football, you have to recruit year-round, make sure your kids are going to class, and you have to continuously teach your limited play book to a group of players that will only be there 4-5 years max. In the NFL you actually have an offseason, coach 16 games a year, and keep your players off of Goodell's naughty list. I know what job looks more appealing to me.

I doubt Harbaugh is going anywhere. He's got a premier job in the NFL and has what appears to be a regular Super Bowl contender. Why leave that to go back to college and have to completely rebuild a program? But if he did go to Texas, it'd be the ultimate slap in the face to our entire program.

As if this entire year wouldn't be able to get any shittier.

Do you have any actual evidence for your assertions of fact, or are you just making this up?

Harbaugh went to the NFL because that's where he wanted to be.  There is no indication that he would have been interested in the Michigan job no matter what, given that SF wanted to hire him.

Your feelings about Michigan climate doesn't create evidence about Harbaugh's feeling on it.

Could you imagine Dave Brandon and Jim harbaugh in the same room....EVER? You just said jim doesn't shy away from conflict...then you go on and want us to get involved???!l lol...Jim harbaugh will never be the head football coach at Michigan as long as Brandon is around. 2 very big egos that would clash as soon as Brandon asked to sit in on film....

he has an opportunity to do something bigger than to just be a NFL head coach. He is in the prefect scenario to become a college football legend. Bringing Penn St back to National Championship level, after what they went through, could only be scripted in the movies. I never thought of him as being the "guy who replaced the guy". He's a great coach and if his put in 15-20 years in State College, they would erect a statue for him.
