Coaching rumors UPDATED: full-time ST (Webb), Wheatley at RBs (Balas)

Look for Michigan to hire an assistant that will coach special teams exclusively. No position

— Sam Webb (@SamWebb77) January 7, 2015

This is thread-worthy, I think, because I'm pretty sure that this is Sam's way of saying something without revealing the name of the person who is going to take the job...

EDIT: Balas seems to be indicating that Ty Wheatley is our new RB coach:

Tyrone Wheatley officially in as Michigan's RB coach? Sounds like it ($): https://t.co/6VzBjjy9BA

http://m.golobos.com/mobile/ViewArticle.dbml?atclid=209076767&DB_OEM_ID…; "Hutzler spent the three seasons (2007-09) prior to that at Stanford, working for coach Jim Harbaugh. He was a defensive/special teams assistant in 2008 and '09. He began his coaching career under Harbaugh at the University of San Diego in 2006 as a defensive assistant. The Toreros' nationally ranked defense helped USD win the Division I-AA Mid Major National Championship. Hutzler graduated from Middlebury (Vt.) College in 2006 with a bachelor's degree in psychology. He played linebacker for the Panthers from 2002-05 and finished his career with 246 total tackles, which ranked second on Middlebury's all-time career list. Hutzler also accounted for 26 tackles-for-loss, 10 sacks, three interceptions and three forced fumbles. He also served as the Panthers team captain."

Is it uncommon to formally announce assistant hires? Seems odd that there have been no official releases from Michigan. Are they waiting to have a full staff or have I missed official announcements?

This isn't a shocker...I've actually been more surprised that Brian and others weren't including a ST coach in the initial predictions. Seems like a given to me.

That's why I keep saying "NO! NO! NO!" to anyone who thinks we're going to hire a coordinator that isn't going to coach a position group.

I wonder if VA Tech does this.  They have had probably the best special teams over the past 20 years.  Maybe Beamer just spends a ton of time on it.

OFFENSE Coach DEFENSE Coach
co-OC (run) Tim Drevno co-DC DJ Durkin
co-OC (pass) John Morton
QB Jim Harbaugh DT Greg Mattison
RB Tyrone Wheatley DE/OLB Roy Manning
WR John Morton ILB DJ Durkin
OL Tim Drevno DB Greg Jackson
TE ?????? ?????? ST ?????? ??????

I'll take this for sure if we can get rockstar TE and Special Teams coaches...

...or OL and Special Teams if Tim Drevno goes to TE.

Man I miss watching Tyrone Wheatley in the winged helmet. Still my favorite RB ever. If he does end up as the RB coach I hope some of his mojo rubs off on the players.
