Coach Hoke on OLINE and Mason Cole

Submitted by mrkid on

Coach Hoke was on "The Sports Brothers" on 107.3 WBBL-FM this morning and had some interesting comments that I thought the board would like to hear.

On the offensive line (3:44 mark):

Nothing earth shattering here but Hoke said they circled Sunday (8/17) as a day to have "some continuity" on the offensive line. They have gone through fall camp with the "first group" but "every once and a while" have been putting guys in the mix a little bit to see how they perform with first group. Hoke mentioned a first group like they have a group in mind but who knows. He then mentions Ben Braden as their "right tackle right now", which is what that MLive article referenced.

On incoming freshman (9:15 mark):

Again, nothing really new here but again, Hoke mentions Mason Cole and really praises his high school coach for getting him ready with technique, etc. He highlights that Cole was an early enrollee and calls him "unique" and "a little different". We very well could see Mason Cole as the starting LT but is it because he truly is a special talent?

Hoke also mentions Canteen and Peppers.

....Oh...now I  see that my worst fears were not realized.

All I know is that I looked at the thread title and panicked---saw something in the title about Hoke being on the OLINE and was afraid that not only did he still have some eligibility left, but worse yet, our OLINE was such a tire fire that he had sewn up one of the starting positions himself.

I get the feeling that Hoke is trying to push others with these comments. I would be pretty surprised if Mags, Kalis, Glasgow, Bosch, Braden weren't the starters week 2. Those 5 have the most playing time which is a more realistic gauge of who the coaches trust.

I'm going to have to totally disagree here. You don't bury a guy you're going to start for a week. You might, might drop him for a day, but not this long. These guys need reps, and at this point the coaches are going to give reps to guys they think can play. It's past any point that could be a motivational tool.

@Dan

Who the heck on this line is feeling entitled and fat and happy that they need motivating?  They should feel embarassed - the whole country doubts every one of them.   Every thread we hear "it's a motivational tool" as if Hoke is a mastermind puppet master who has a bevy of players who cannot motivate themselves.  It is never about actual performance and/or coaches trying different players.

If these theories of so many players needing "motivating" are so true, Hoke needs to start recruiting self motivated players.  I don't think it's true in the least.

I have heard that many NFL teams are starting to emphasize the guard position, and building their lines "from the inside out". A prototypical tackle-sized guy like Kyle Long playing inside for the Bears for example. That might be Michigan's way of thinking as well, and the reason for putting a newbie at LT and the older guys at Guard. Also, I expect DG to do a lot of rolling to his right (something he's good at and likes to do), which makes life easier on the LT.

Per Angelique's twitter just now, Kalis was held out of practice today. So, perhaps, maybe, possibly, he's banged up and that's part of the reason for interior shuffling? Who knows.

I really didn't like Mags at guard last year.  I don't think he has the body for it, but he did give us plenty of effort.  Mags is built for the tackle position.  If you want to see a real guard body look at Kalis.   Hopefully Kalis does not have a serious injury and will put it together this season.  I haven't given up on him yet.

Mags was so good at guard last year was because of all the pulling he did. Different offense this year, guards gotta be more maulers. But who cares, best 5 right? I just dont wanna see anyone move positions once the season starts.

Let's just get the best five out there. I don't care what they were rated coming out of high school or if they are a freshman or senior. It looks like some guys are stepping up.
