CNNSI Over & Underated recruits:

Submitted by CHI_BLU on

Not sure how they are came up with this, but here goes:

Underrated

Jabrill Peppers, CB (Michigan): "He's probably the best overall player in the country. He can play running back, safety, cornerback, probably linebacker. There ain't nothing he can't do.

Overrated

Da'Shawn Hand, DE (Alabama): "I don't see him make the same plays that all the great ones make. He'll make some plays, but he'll get lost at times."

but, it's been noted, I believe on this blog during the late season that both RJS and TR aren't thrilled with the situation.... That may be playing time, coaching, who knows. I was never that bullish on their prospects coming out of high school, as apposed to Ross or someone like Stribling with raw talent. TR seemed to be another Cissoko to me, and RJS seemed like a large athletic kid, who was a bit awkward.....just didn't see the instincts like I did with Ross. Not trying to knock on either kid, but I'm not shocked that despite being highly ranked recruits that they are struggling to see the field. I don't see their comments to Webb as surprising, unfortunately.

tossed Richardson in with a group of possible transfers during the fall which as we know was based solely on the speculations of a teenager in his mother's basement.  That being said, I would not be shocked at all if Richardson did transfer as he has been passed on the depth chart by a number of bigger, younger players.

Richardson's and Jenkins-Stone's alleged lack of development on the coaches?  Hmmm.  Maybe just maybe much of the reason they (again allegedly) haven't developed as fast is because of THEM.  Some players just don't pan out for whatever reason.  Every program brings in a lot of highly rated players, and a certain % of them will not see a lot of playing time or may even transfer.  That doesn't mean they aren't getting coached well.  Methinks I smell Mr. Webb being fed some negative recruiting speak from someone.

But I agree, a lot of accountability needs to fall on the individual. At the beginning of the season, wasn't there talk about RJS's lack of weight, that he was the same weight as when he entered school? I definitely could be wrong, but I thought I remembered reading that he would have a hard time playing college linebacker at his high school weight. How is that a coach's fault? Oh well, too much reality there I guess....

You could throw Boubacar Cissoko on that list as well.

Not every big time in-state recruit winds up at Michigan. Can't blame the kid.

Up to the players suiting up for Michigan to prove he made the wrong choice.

Wasn't Dupre one of the recruits that Cam Cameron followed all the way to Los Angeles last week? It's sort of interesting then, if indeed he was going to likely stay closer to home, that LSU would be that insecure about its own position. I find the sort of behavior that recruiting generates rather fascinating sometimes.

Is Webb aware that it was Meyer who said (paraphrased) "out of every 3 recruits, one's a bust, one's a stud, and one's flat average"

I can't say I disagree with that statement. That's not a knock on recruits so much as the reality of college football vs. high school. Stars don't matter after signing a LOI, especially at a place like Alabama or LSU and you are only compared to the hype prior to hitting the field.

This will sound like sour grapes, but in watching Hand's tape, I get the same feeling as when I watched Derrick Green's tape last year.  I see a guy who is bigger and stronger than his competition and therefore, he inevitably makes plays.  But I am not blown away like I was with other tapes (ie Peppers and Ty Isaac).  Hand could certainly become a dominant player (and hopefully Green will).  I'm just a know-nothing guy on the internet, but I can see how CNNSI came to this entirely arbitrary prediction.

I know what Pelinka ended up doing, sports agent (most notably for Kobe) but whatever happened to Voskuil? He was a super nice guy. UM lost to IU at home in '93, he missed the last shot at the buzzer. The next day at my work, he came in and ordered some food. While he was waiting, my coworkers started talking about why would Voskuil take that shot, last guy on team who should have taken that shot, he blew it etc....well, when I gave him his order, he just smiled. I said, I guess they don't know who you are, and he just smiled and nodded. Trying to make up for it, I added, I went to the game and I thought you played a very good game and you played good d on Calbert Chaney, just so he knew I knew a little something about bball. He responded with thanks which was generic but then he reached out and shook my hand. Thought that was nice of him. He really didn't let the comments get to him and he even came back on several occasions. So like I said, he's a really nice guy.

Webb's quotes in the article are fun as well.  The guy has really taken Ohio to heart and he definitely eems to be taking his cues from Meyer.  Citing the examples of Richardson and Jenkins-Stone seems like confirmation bias above all else.

I've been saying this for a while about Hand. I think he's a "can't miss" prospect in that he will be a good player and is fairly ready physically, but he's not a dominant freak athlete like Jadeveon Clowney. I don't think he'll be a bust who sits on the sideline, gets in trouble, transfers to a JUCO, etc., but I don't think we'll hear a ton about him for the next four years, either.
