CMU defensive game plan
Saw this:
Hoke on radio show with @brandymancan says CMU ran MSU's defensive game plan vs. UM. Said CMU must have visited with Spartans
mostly just curious what the board thinks about this, not that it happened, but how, if at all, it relates to playing state.

Cool, so we beat Sparty by 50 points then, right?

His willingness to scramble (and greater recognition of scrambling lanes) helps a lot, too. Scrambling QBs can make defenses pay for overpursuit. Denard scored a rush TD against MSU in 2011 on a scramble, but didn't do enough of that in general against them.
September 4th, 2013 at 7:37 PM ^
Then CMU's coaching staff is just dumb because MSU's defensive plan against us was based on Denard.

State's defensive game plan seems pretty consistent, regardless of opponent. Blitz like crazy. I noticed in the game that CMU was very aggresive with the blitzing, just didn't seem to be very good at it.

Though I'm sure we'll see similar looks throughout our first 2/3 of our schedule, it's great that Gardner is getting a dose of what they'll do. Early implementation and repetition of what might come in the future is a better chance for success than a surprise.
September 4th, 2013 at 7:50 PM ^
If anything Miller and the interior OL got a look at a lot of A gap blitzing, so at least it won't be foreign. Gardner knows he will have to picky in his run and throws.
Also shows Al he can't go huge all the damn time and might have to dink and dunk down the field.
September 5th, 2013 at 1:39 AM ^
He might need to go huge more. If they're constantly bringing the safeties up like Central did then you need to punish them by going over the top. Fortunately the game was in hand so Al didn't really have to show that part of the gameplan much and he could just keep cramming the ball down their throat.
September 4th, 2013 at 7:53 PM ^
They also used MSU's offensive gameplan.

And more kudos.
September 4th, 2013 at 8:08 PM ^
Except they executed it better.
September 4th, 2013 at 8:18 PM ^
Granted, personnel changes and all that, but the funny thing about saying this is that, well, it's sort of true based on last year's numbers. Central Michigan's offense was 63rd in total offense in 2012, compared to Michigan State's rather lowly 95th on the same metric.
September 4th, 2013 at 8:32 PM ^
In terms of passing, CMU overall was 13-28 for 144 yards, or 5.1 yards per pass.
MSU was 17-37 for 116 yards, or 3.1 yards per pass.

Dan Enos - Current head coach of CMU was the QB/RB coach for Dantonio for years, both at Cincy and MSU. He is friends with the entire MSU staff that Dantonio has retained for years as well (for the most part).
September 4th, 2013 at 7:56 PM ^
Well Dan Enos only coached under Mark Dantonio, so I wouldn't say this is surprising. Same X's and O's, different Jimmys and Joes.
September 4th, 2013 at 8:08 PM ^
that we knocked half of his team into next Tuesday.
September 4th, 2013 at 8:25 PM ^
It doesn't relate at all to playing state. MSU has much better defensive players with much better coaching.
September 4th, 2013 at 11:18 PM ^
Well apparently not to the OP.
September 5th, 2013 at 12:07 AM ^
September 5th, 2013 at 9:05 AM ^
The OP specifically acknowledged that there might be no relevance at all, something you characteristically ignored.
"mostly just curious what the board thinks about this, not that it happened, but how, if at all, it relates to playing state."
The implication of what you're saying is that what Brady Hoke mentioned is irrelevant and stupid.
September 4th, 2013 at 8:29 PM ^
about staff.
September 4th, 2013 at 9:43 PM ^
I didn't know Narduzzi's and Dantonio's defensive knowledge was up for debate.
September 4th, 2013 at 8:26 PM ^
In terms of playing MSU, it doesn't matter much at all. Even beyond MSU's front 7, the MSU secondary is regarded as the best in the conference. CMU wasn't trotting out All-B1G caliber DBs.
September 4th, 2013 at 9:07 PM ^
I don't feel bad about destroying "sparty Dan" but I do feel bad a few of his players were hurt. Hopefully they recover and get back on the field as soon as they can.

Their whole alignment was different.

Lawful Neutral (CMU) vs. Chaotic Evil (MSU)?
September 5th, 2013 at 9:10 AM ^
Thank you, I thought this was funny.
September 5th, 2013 at 12:10 AM ^
Thats about the only similarity I see. Doesn't work as well when we have a QB who can pass efectively
September 5th, 2013 at 12:59 AM ^
it doesn't work as well when we have a QB who will leave the pocket to escape pressure. Denard would almost never ever scramble on a pass play. Devin's ability to feel the pressure, move outside the pocket while at the same time keeping his eyes open down the field is a huge asset.
September 5th, 2013 at 11:20 AM ^
effective MSU was in keepting Braxton Miller contained last year? Miller had yards but I don't remember how many came out designed runs vs. drop back-nothing there-scrambles.

23 for 136 but no on the way it was done.

I've heard of dinking and dunking, but that's not good.
/ cackling evilly

"Clanking and clunking" would probably be a more apt description of what MSU was doing against WMU.

Denard couldn't make teams pay for their aggression; that's why eventually every Saturday saw teams blitzing up the gut like mad. Devin made CMU pay for that gameplan; hopefully, he can continue to do so.
