CMU defensive game plan

Submitted by Worthing on

Saw this:

Hoke on radio show with @brandymancan says CMU ran MSU's defensive game plan vs. UM. Said CMU must have visited with Spartans

mostly just curious what the board thinks about this, not that it happened, but how, if at all, it relates to playing state.

I would hardly call 290 vs 310 and 320 vs 300 'much bigger' (especially if you recall one of MSUs DTs is a very Pat Massey 6'7"). What would be much bigger is comparing it to one of Western's DTs which is 255 or DEs less than 220. Or Air Force actually having 250 DTs. CMU is one of the few MAC schools that actually has some size up front at both lines. This of course does not mean they're actually good like MSU though...

Though I'm sure we'll see similar looks throughout our first 2/3 of our schedule, it's great that Gardner is getting a dose of what they'll do.  Early implementation and repetition of what might come in the future is a better chance for success than a surprise.

If anything Miller and the interior OL got a look at a lot of A gap blitzing, so at least it won't be foreign. Gardner knows he will have to picky in his run and throws.

Also shows Al he can't go huge all the damn time and might have to dink and dunk down the field.

He might need to go huge more. If they're constantly bringing the safeties up like Central did then you need to punish them by going over the top. Fortunately the game was in hand so Al didn't really have to show that part of the gameplan much and he could just keep cramming the ball down their throat.

Granted, personnel changes and all that, but the funny thing about saying this is that, well, it's sort of true based on last year's numbers. Central Michigan's offense was 63rd in total offense in 2012, compared to Michigan State's rather lowly 95th on the same metric.

Dan Enos - Current head coach of CMU was the QB/RB coach for Dantonio for years, both at Cincy and MSU. He is friends with the entire MSU staff that Dantonio has retained for years as well (for the most part).

It doesn't relate at all to playing state.  MSU has much better defensive players with much better coaching.

The OP specifically acknowledged that there might be no relevance at all, something you characteristically ignored.

"mostly just curious what the board thinks about this, not that it happened, but how, if at all, it relates to playing state."

The implication of what you're saying is that what Brady Hoke mentioned is irrelevant and stupid.

In terms of playing MSU, it doesn't matter much at all.  Even beyond MSU's front 7, the MSU secondary is regarded as the best in the conference.  CMU wasn't trotting out All-B1G caliber DBs.

Also not surprised it didn't work.

I don't feel bad about destroying "sparty Dan" but I do feel bad a few of his players were hurt. Hopefully they recover and get back on the field as soon as they can.

Interesting that this is brought up because their safeties were filling aggressively and their linebackers were screaming downhill at every opportunity. Very reminiscent of Staee.

Denard couldn't make teams pay for their aggression; that's why eventually every Saturday saw teams blitzing up the gut like mad. Devin made CMU pay for that gameplan; hopefully, he can continue to do so.
