The Clowney-Lewan battle

Article at sportsline about the game's big matchup, notes that it shaped up as the blockbuster battle that everyone expected:

http://www.cbssports.com/nfl/draft/blog/rob-rang/21483627/clowney-vs-lew....

Suggests that Clowney gave Lewan problems, but that Michigan's All American lineman largely held his own. Lewan was not responsible for Clowney on the big play that nailed Vince Smith in the backfield and resulted in a fumble.

EDIT: After the game, according to the News, Lewan sought Clowney out. "I went up to him after the game and told him, 'You're one of the best defensive ends I've ever played against.' He said, 'You're the best tackle I've ever played against.' So that's a great compliment to have, but none of this matters because we didn't win the damn game."

People (SC fans especially)

People (SC fans especially) were extremely confident about Clowney, saying he would get multiple sacks. Not only did he not get a single sack, I don't remember him ever getting to the QB. Sure he gave Lewan some problems but if that's all you can say for arguably the best defensive player in college football thats a very decisive win for the offensive lineman.

 Michigan ran over 60

Michigan ran over 60 offensive plays and Clowney finished with 4 Tackles 2 TFL and 0 sacks. Lewan and the offensive coaches did an excellent job making him a non factor. Great players like Clowney are hard to shut down for an entire game and he did make 2 plays. Taylor has nothing left to prove and i'd love to see him come back for his senior year but I won't blame him when he moves on

One minor quibble...

"Lewan and the offensive coaches did an excellent job making him a non factor."

My only real major complaint with the coaches or coordinators yesterday is that we actually had a play in our playbook that assigned a walk-on TE the responsibility of blocking JaDeveon MF Clowney. I still can't figure out how that play wasn't completely scrapped for this game.

If Clowney didn't get to the QB, I would say that Lewan gave him problems.

Clowney

Clowney did get a holding call on Lewan and blew him up once late when he nailed Denard behind the LOS. But on the whole, Lewan at the least held his own.

He almost destroyed Gardner

He almost destroyed Gardner completely on that screen play.  Devin turned around in just the nick of time, and got the ball out when Clowney was literally right in his face.

Lewan stonewalled him

and probably earned a couple of million extra bucks over the course of the afternoon.

On the optimistic side, Schofield came in and did a pretty decent job for a couple of series.  Is the thinking he goes to LT next year and Magnusson or another RS Frosh goes to RT, or something else?

Totally agree

I can't believe Clowney got player of the game. I thought multiple other SC players (including on defense) deserved it over him. He was largely ineffective except for one or two plays all game. Lewan owned him.

Pretty sure Lewan's agent

will do a mashup of his plays vs. Clowney when it's time to negotiate the contract.

Would have said they should throw his ownage of Gholston on the tape as well, but the dude has fallen so far off the scale, it doesn't really prove anything anymore.

Agree.  I get that Clowney's a great player and his tackle for loss/forced fumble/fumble recovery was a huge play, but he was pretty quiet the rest of the game with only 3 other tackles.  Seems like the guy who scored 3 TDs and couldn't be stopped on offense (Sanders) should be the MVP.

I thought the same thing.

When he got "Player of the game" my whole house went "wtf"?? Based on that one (gigantic) hit? Whatever. But it seemed like an insult to Taylor, after he (along with offensive play calling) kept Clowney in check for the most part.

Absolutely

Sanders was the real difference maker for SC in this game - NOT Clowney.  Without Sanders making a couple of those big plays, Michigan wins.

Agree

Giving the MVP to Clowney is clownish.  The receiver/ punt returner had 3 TDs and some great plays.  He definitely deserved it a lot more.  Hell, even Shaw probably deserved it more.

Neutralized

Spurrier's non-mention of Clowney at the end of the game was very telling; he mentioned several other players as well. Media hype gave this one to Clowney. With the exception of essentially one play (that we handed to him), he was a non-factor.

Ace should've gotten player of the game.  Returned a punt, got key first downs, and caught the game winner.

He got player of the game based on one play, that has completely blown up.  Ace Saunders should have been player of the game, and there isn't a question.

Football games are mostly decided by big plays.

They used to say the same thing about Jim Brown of the Cleveland Brown: "Except for that 60 yard run and the 32 yard carry, we pretty much held him in check."

The tackle-fumble-pick-up-the-ball-with-my -left-hand play was, well, you have to give the guy some credit.

I think what was even more

I think what was even more telling was that Burzynski came in and filled in nicely for Omameh at guard.

Our OL is going to be better at 3 positions next year, and worse at one.

Magnusson doesn't look like a strong side tackle in Borges's offense, but maybe another nine months makes him viable. Ideally, none of the Freshmen would get pressed into service at left tackle next season, so the job is probably Schofield's if he plays reasonably well.

In all honesty I don't think

In all honesty I don't think Bryant will be a factor. He was so out of shape and such a big project his freshman year and he got hurt from the get go this year. Bars or the walk on that's been getting such praise (name?) will be right there with him if not ahead. It should be noted that I'm obviously not in the loop and I have no idea what I'm talking about.

Yes, Bryant came in

Yes, Bryant came in overweight, but was down to 318 to start this fall before his injury.  And his injury was one that should be just fine for spring practice, so I don't think that will be much of an issue going forward. Bryant is bigger and better than most of the guards on our team, so although it's entirely possible that someone beats him out, he's still probably the favorite to get the non-Kalis OG spot.

And you're thinking of Brzynski, who has done well (and went in today when Lewan went out).  Also, Graham Glasgow is another walk-on interior sort who could crack the line-up, and it has been reported that him and Miller are neck and neck for  back-up OC snaps.  If Miller wins the job at center, I could see Glasgow being the back-up at a few different OL spots.  He's certainly got the size - at 6'6" 305, he's one of our biggest OL as a redshirt frosh.

All I'm saying is when he

All I'm saying is when he came in he was incredibly raw and had to completely change his body. Throw in an entire season lost to injury and will again have to kill bad weight I think you've got a player who's not ready for meaningful pt.

He'll be two years removed

He'll be two years removed from that though.  When he showed up this past fall, he was down 25 or so pounds and reportedly in much better shape.  Then he broke his leg, but that doesn't have a huge recovery time and he'll have 9 months to drop whatever bad weight he put back on.  But the reason Bryant was rated as highly as he was had to do with how athletic he is for his size.

Yeah, I think it's most

Yeah, I think it's most likely that Schofield plays LT from here on out and Magnuson or Braden will battle it out at RT.

I'm guessing

that Braden is the starting RT and that Mangusson is the backup LT.  Braden is much bigger at the moment, but who knows what'll happen with another 9 months of weight training.

When you say Braden is bigger

When you say Braden is bigger at the moment, you mean that Braden was bigger when they showed up to camp in August (when roster weights are measured).  They are the same height, and Braden came in 23 pounds heavier.  Magnuson isn't exactly small, at 285 he was 11 pounds lighter than Barnum and 15 pounds lighter than Schofield.  After a full year of S&C,  Magnuson could be every bit of 300, and at the very least, the weight difference between him and Braden won't be the determining factor.

It was good yes

It was good, yes, but of course the first play we take Lewan off of guarding Clowney, the man goes and kills Vincent Smith which earned him MVP honors and will probably be replayed incessantly on ESPN.  Lewan-Clowney matchup of the ages?  Check.  Clowney with the game-changer?  Also check.

But UM then scored to take the lead after that play.  I'm not disagreeing that it wasn't a great play, but game-changer is harder for me given that the teams scored 3 more times after that play.

Timing

Look at the timing, though.  Eight minutes left in the fourth quarter, Michigan's ball, threatening to put together a long drive, possibly score, and give the ball back to USC with much less room for error.  They needed a big defensive play, and they got one pretty emphatically.

Not a game changing hit.

Exactly! How is it a game changer if we came back and took the lead with under 2 minutes? South Carolina won with what was basically a hail mary. Game changers typically swing the entire momentum against the opposing team....we scored real quick.

If that hit doesn't happen, odds are, we win.

It seemed very much like a draw to me, both played very well and both improved their draft stock.

Also, how Manti T'eo was voted as the best defender in college football over Clowney is absurd, this guy would be dominating the NFL right now

I thought it was funny listening to Gruden and Tirico say Clowney was the best defensive player in the country after watching ESPN hype Teo leading up to the Heisman.

hmmmmm...

Clowney is a good player, very good, at the collegiate level. That said, don't kid yourself that he'd be dominating at the NFL level at this point.

FWIW, if Taylor Lewan could hold him to a draw (or probably end up in plus numbers against him) I don't suspect that Jake Long and Joe Thomas are losing much sleep worrying about the guy.

He might be great at the next level but it is a hell of a jump.

It seems to me that this year,

the refs would grant a first down rather than measuring on third down or earlier.

Perhaps this ref didn't get the memo not to do that on 4th down w a change of possession hanging in the balance.

Clowney getting player of the game was a joke.  Dude had four tackles.  Sure he forced the fumble, but are you telling me he was more valuable than the guy with 3 TDs?  I think not.  But what do you expect from sports?  Objectivity is not exaclty highly-valued.

Shaw came up limping numerous times throughout the game, and the announcers made frequent reference to a foot injury he suffered earlier in the year and had re-aggravated recently. For someone with so much to say about it, you don't seem to have given the game much attention.

So his limp back to the huddle after that run was just some sort of avant garde celebration, and not related to the foot injury he suffered against Tennessee and has re-injured repeatedly? Because it's impossible to make any plays while fighting through injury?

That's the obvious part of the statement.  To me, this game really accentuated a flaw on our defense: No organic d-line pressure.  We constantly had to dial up blitzes with inexperienced/unestablished personnel in the secondary.  We needed a guy this year who could cause match up problems (e.g. Martin, Graham).  We didn't have that this year at all.

Clowney was mostly held in check, but unfortunately his decapitation of Vincent Smith is what's going to be remembered, despite the fact that it was not Lewan's fault. People will look at that and assume Clowney just had his way with our offensive line all day. It was one missed assignment that just proved to be very costly.

If you ask me, holding arguably the best defensive player in the country to 3 tackles and 1 TFL tells me Lewan won the matchup. But tomorrow morning, all ESPN will talk about is how Michigan just can't handle the speed of the SEC, that we're not any good, blah blah blah more ESPN sucking SEC dick.

I'll be interested to see which way the story is spun. Clockwise, I'm sure (the direction of the sec) Maybe its my maize tinted glasses (or a collection of McClure's bloody Mary tinted glasses) but it seemed that the speed/power thing was neutralized a bit. Other than some dreadful secondary play (by the 3 deep) our big(ish) guys kept their fast guys in check.

SEC speed

That killer SEC speed only played a factor on a hand full of plays. ( especially special teams) The majority of the big passing plays we gave up where all posts and double moves. Its funny because it Devin could have been more in sync with Gallon from the get go they would have demonstrated just as much speed. To me the issue is never speed. Its all technique, size and of course natural ability. They don't put any magical pill down in that southern water. They just have twice the opportunity to practice while growing up. Two football seasons a year down there in a area of the nation that already revolves around youth and high school football. Speed is not the issue. Many of those young men just have more opportunities to play the game. Its all natural when you do it every day. Just my opinion of course.

They did show some brief

They did show some brief matchups of Lewan and Clowney and they did mention that Lewan was holding his own and keeping Clowney in check.  But then he had the one big hit and immediately everyone forgot how up to that point he was a nonfactor.

Play should have been dead

Isn't the play ruled dead as soon as the helmet comes off? In that case, he shouldn't have had a forced/recovered fumble. And it is still michigan ball. Is that not right?

No doubt it was a great hit.

No doubt it was a great hit. But here's a different perspective: Clowney is 6'6" and weighs 260. Vincent Smith is 5'6" and weighs 175-ish. How many 5'6" guys get up after that hit? Vincent Smith: toughest guy on the field.

Glad you posted this.  He got up as if it was a normal tackle.  Sure, sometimes you get popped, it's football.  I can't believe the assignment was missed that bad.

Al Borges

Deserves a ton of credit in keeping the defense at bay. Could have been much worse if he dipped into the Alabama play book. Happy he kept it diverse. Felt he called a solid game and execution on some simple passing plays (and several big plays d gave up of course) killed us.

I thought the same thing

I thought the same thing, but I think the ball was out at the same time the helmet came off. The helmet just moved quicker. 6'7'' 270 full sprint on 5'6'' 165 hesitantly attempting to run a westside dive. Just a great defensive play.

Don't think it was a game changer

But really karma for the bad call by the refs saying we had a first down. Great hit, but should not have been player of the game. At all

I watched probably 5

full South Carolina games this fall and Clowney was pretty much as he was all year.  He was a factor most plays either in busting one up or the offense staying away from him.  I thought did an excellent job on him compared to most tackels in the SEC games I watched.  But he has strangely long stretches where he does nothing, sits on the sidelines looking tired.

Then the 4th Q comes and he makes 2 or 3 plays you've never F'ing seen before in your life and you suddenly think you've just seen the best damn defensive linemen to ever play  the game.

I just got home from work,

I just got home from work, watched the game on dvr, saw the hit by Clowney and thought one thing. WTF Borges? Clowney is stupid athletic and talented and Borges decided part of the game plan was to allow him to be unblocked mulitple times. When Lewan was assingned to block the guy across from him, that guy was blocked 99% of the time. And when you can say Clowney is just that guy being blocked, you block him every play. Once again our OC was the reason we lost the game. /end rant/continue drinking.

I actually think Borges

I actually think Borges called a good game, and who ever called me an "expert"? But to let Clowney be unblocked is just a bad idea. He is too athletic to get much of anything done when he can run anywhere be wants. This loss is on that play and Clowney being able to run free happened more than that one play. It was part of the game plan and it was a poor part of the game plan.

Not how blocking assignments work

Giving Clowney a free run on handoffs was not, surprisingly enough, part of Borges's game plan. As described illuminatingly in the Borges thread, the Clowney hit resulted from a miscommunication between Lewan and Kwiatkowski -- Kwiatkowski thought he and Lewan were going to be doubling Clowney, Lewan blocked down instead, and Clowney took advantage of the mix-up to decapitate Smith, exacting revenge for the earlier dong headbutt. Lewan actually describes this error in a post-game interview (again illuminatingly linked to in the Borges thread).

Thanks for the recap. My game

Thanks for the recap. My game plan comment was a knee jerk reaction to seeing Clowney running unblocked a few times during the game and the fact that one huge play lost the game. Lewan killed it this game, this whole year for that matter. I really believe that Borges will be a damn good OC when he has players he knows what to do with. Its just that he didn't know how to get the best out of Denard, which I really can't blame him for, Denard is a once in a lifetime type of QB. I have said many times that I will reserve my judgement on Borges until Shane Morris' second year starting.

Nothing against Vince

Nothing against Vince Smith, he took that hit like a champ considering he was outweighed by  almost 70 pounds and a foot of height and didn't show a bit for wear from it but...I can't wait until Clowney tries that against Green.  Here's to looking forward to the day we roll out a power front combo like LTT/Magnuson/Kalis/Kulger/Dawson/Fox/Bosch and push guys like Clowney 5 yards back off the ball.

To me ESPN gave Clowney

the MVP before he supposedly earned it. I am sure there are several Michigan defenders who were more deserving than him, at least statistically wise." South Carolina Deserves to have it and they do" WTF. They won it with 11 sec. on the clock. Congradulations you beat a good but not great UM team. For me, next year can't get here fast enough I know the loss of Denard is sad but the promise and potential of new recruits is really exciting. Bring on spring practice and as always GO BLUE!.
