Clint Brewster: Wheatley Jr. Update

Submitted by Jim Harbaugh on

According to Clint Brewster, Tyrone Wheatley Jr. is now 6'7" 286 pounds. With his athleticism he could develop into a first round left tackle.

Unable to embed the tweet at the time but passing along the info for discussion. Where do you think Wheatley Jr. ultimately ends up position wise?

I beg to differ. What if a giant came and grabbed you and tried to pull you in half but just dislocated very bone in your spine elongating you by a few inches, but you couldnt walk or anything, but you tried to play football.  How about then good sir!??!?

With Wheatley's build, it will be easier to melt off a few pounds between now and September than it would be for him to come in under weight and then add 20 lbs.

Why do you see a redshirt, just curious?  Numbers are light at TE, and Harbaugh loves them.  They moved a totally-unprepared-for-it Winovich over in spring, and looked at Poggi.  They need TE's, and if Wheatley is serviceable he has a good chance to contribute.

They can play him at TE this year, move him to OT next year.

It could change, but I don't see him redshirting. I think they'll probably get him some game experience so he can be ready to help replace A.J. Williams next year. All you've got is Williams (not a receiving threat), Khalid Hill (coming off a torn ACL), Jake Butt (he's pretty good), Ian Bunting (very thin), and some position-switchers (Winovich, Poggi).

If he is still a TE dont see  reason you'd burn a RS with Butt, Hill, Bunting, and AJ Williams.  Unless we are going 4 TE sets.  Which could happen.B

But bigger picture if he looks like that now, and he is just turning 18 or whatnot I dont see him being a 270 lber for long with muscle mass gains/college food/weight training etc.  Looks like he is headed to be a lineman down the road.

This thread title gave me a heart attack.  Why is there an update on Tryone Wheatley Jr?  Did he not make grades?  Did he get injured?  Did he get blasted into outer space?  Or, wait.  He's just super huge.  Phew.  what a relief.

Kind of like Gates, Gonzalez. Jimmy Graham and all the former basketball players that became stud TE's, Dwight Howard is the guy I'd really love to see give it a go.

At 6'10" & 275 lbs, with plenty of athleticism, dude is just an absolute freak of nature that'd be unstoppable in the red zone. Defenses would have to play Hack-a-Howard like they do in the NBA.

Michigan needs a blocking TE and AJ Williams has struggled for a few years now.  I expect TWJ to play as a freshman and help free up Jake Butt to move around and keep defenses on their toes.

Butt/Hill/Bunting can function as the pass-catching TE and Williams/Wheatley will block.

Especially with the lack of big threats at WR, it makes sense to play more 2-TE sets.

He and my son went to school together K-7 in NE A2 and played with and competed against each other in basketball. He was already 6'3" /180ish in 7th grade and towered over his dad (who was about 6' even).

His mother told me there were a number of men on her side of the family who were in the 6'7" range so I am not surprised TJ ended up that tall. He had very good wheels for a kid his size back then and a helluva motor. I see him either at TE or SDE when all is said and done. He had good hands as a BB player but I've never seen him play football.

BTW, his mom was a D1 NCAA volleyball player -- the rest of us mere mortals don't stand a chance against  genetically refined individuals like TJ.  At one time he played travel BB with Andre Goode's son, Garrison. Andre played BB at Northwestern in the early 80's and then went on to a pro career in Italy. Garrison was also an athletic marvel with both height and speed but they moved to Milwaukee before high school. I think he will play D1 BB somewhere.

TJ is a very nice kid. Actually, the Wheatley's are a very solid family top to bottom. Glad to have them back in town. Glad the timing worked out for them to Go Blue again -- I had joked with Ty back thenabout putting Fred out to pasture and coming back to A2 with TJ as a package deal..
