CMU to Marshall seems like a lateral move to me. OK, sure, C-USA has more bowl tie-ins and has slightly more respect nationally, but I don't see it being an upgrade over the Chips. I mean, how high can you really get at Marshall compared to CMU? I'd submit they're about the same.

Chuck Martin is my favorite "sleeper" coach. Not sure you can call him that given his D-II success, but he's one of the coaches that I "discovered" before they became known. That doesn't really count for anything, but I've been rooting for him and would hate to see him go to the enemy. Plus, if RichRod doesn't work out ...

I don't know, he did refuse to interview this week. But really, he's a young guy who has a D-II school at the ultimate heights year after year, really think he wouldn't want to challenge himself at a higher level? I'm all for loyalty, but lets be honest, in college football, once you become a head coach, the only way to "get promoted" is to change schools. I don't know what your professional career is like, but if you work for a company, it's reasonable that you would want to move up the chain of command to higher responsibilities and better pay. In College football, to do that, you excel at your current job, then get "promoted" to a better one. The elite powers (Florida, Alabama, Texas, Michigan, USC, ND, etc.) are like being CEO with other jobs essentially being somewhere along the chain of middle management, where you hope to move up from. To take the analogy a step further, you can "start your own business," by essentially establishing an otherwise also ran as a national power a la Bobby Bowden, Frank Beamer and Joe Paterno. However, that's not exactly easy to do, most coaches eventually either move on, or their programs stagnate and they're pushed aside. Chuck Martin will be given a shot somewhere, and if he has any ambition in his professional career, he will take it, as he should.

This is something a lot of us have been discussing on the GV boards this week. Great timing with the NC game coming up, I know. Apparently BK has asked for his services in the past... http://www.mlive.com/lakers/index.ssf/2009/12/could_chuck_martin_reunit… A little about Chuck- yes, he has had more success than BK in the same timeframe, but a lot of that was with BK's players and after BK had already built the program. Chuck was BK's DC for the last 6 years BK was at GV, IIRC. He may look like a "sleeper" coach on paper, but he is regarded by fans as a poor offensive coach. He would make a great DC at the next level, surely, but he's even stated that he wasn't ready to move up because of his offensive deficiencies. That's cause a lot of grieve for fans who think he's maintained play calling duties solely to benefit his career. Personally, I think the move makes sense. I could even see Martin moving for a position job, because there's just not many more places for him to move and how much more can he accomplish?

Marshall might make sense for Butch Jones since he's from WV, or at least was an assistant there under RR, but it's too much of a lateral move. There was a bit of a Chuck Martin mafia before RR was hired (unless it was just me and another guy) but someone explained that Brian Kelly is really the one who laid down the groundwork for GVSU's success. Still, undefeated through 3 or so seasons ain't too shabby. RR will right the ship though.

Chuck Martin is a great coach but he runs a zone blitz on every play...he really does not do base sets and I'm not sure if that would translate to D-I football...it may and he has an excellent system on tackling that is similar to Greg Robinson's...I think he may end up a mid-size Head Coach instead of a DC.

Is it common for DII games to be this sloppy? i have only been able to watch from the 2nd half on but is this how well most DII teams execute? nm I should put this in a different thread
