Chuck Heater named Temple DC

Submitted by Scotthany on

Just announced by Temple, so on to the next DB coach candidate.

Chuck Heater, who served as the co-defensive coordinator at the University of Florida and has three national championship titles under his belt, has been named the defensive coordinator at Temple University, head football coach Steve Addazio announced on Monday.

I was still holding out hope that Heater would coach our DBs, with the understanding that if things worked out well, he would be the DC in waiting when Mattison hangs it up (4-7 years, tops?).  Not only is he a great coach, I bet those three NC rings and tons of experience in Florida make him a great recruiter.

Oh well.  Good luck, Chuck.

It's pretty cool to think that we can land new defensive recruits even though we don't even have a dedicated DL or DB coach currently on staff.  We're still essentially working with one hand tied behind our backs.  The power of Mattison is great.

Presumably there are a lot of phone calls happening with all the defensive recruits who are signing wednesday, but he is no longer traveling and so I imagine there is time left in the day to focus on the two remaining coaching hires. There'll be a flurry of movement starting now, like this Heater thing.

It will be interesting to see what direction they go. Hoke has hired two coordinators with less time left in their careers than him -- assuming he is successful, he will be replacing both of them at some point in the future. I would expect them to be looking at guys in or near their 30s who could develop into coordinators later. Both Mattison and Borges have the kind of experience and respect required to mentor younger coaches.
