Chris Singletary Stays On Staff

Angelique notes,

Jeff Hecklinski apparently will coach wide receivers and currently is co-recruiting coordinator at Michigan with Chris Singletary, who handled that position for Rodriguez the last three seasons.

Seemingly a smart move to retain him.  He's not a "coach."  But he's a link to what's left of the recruiting class.  I'm sure that, as a "co-," he's aware his time is limited.  But I'm sure RR is taking the year off, anyway.  They'll be back next year, but (apparently) not alongside many of the familiar faces/hairstyles.

I don't know much about how big of an effect a recruiting coordinator has, but it does seem like our results dropped off quite a bit after Singletary took that position. Could be coincidental. I think his first full year on the job was the disastrous class of 2007 where we whiffed on almost a dozen in-state kids.

Chris Singletary is a former Michgan Linebacker and was the recruiting coordinator under Carr.  It seems like Hoke would've gotten rid of him with the rest of the staff if he wasn't planning on holding on to him long term.  Besides, wouldn't it be nice to have two recruiting coordinators anyway?

I doubt the recruiting coordinator decides who's recruited as much as he organizes all of the visits, collects video, handles phone call schedules, and makes sure we aren't breaking any rules. The actual caliber of the recruits is on the coaching staff.

Keeping a few guys from the old staff helps with retaining current players, even if it's just the recruiting coordinator.

Maybe it's b/c we only hear the "bad" news from recruits of when the recruiting coordinator appears to messes up, but I haven't been overly impressed with the contact (or lack of contact) from the staff to the recruits (seniors and juniors).

Maybe this is too reactionary, but if a player is going to his local media to say he hasn't heard from M, I get kinda annoyed.  It just doesn't seem that hard to keep a recruit in the loop at all times - maybe you can't call or visit, but send a letter or an email.

I'm not referring to the recent transition period (though, Crawford does come to mind), but to the stories of 2012 recruits who have already heard from other programs, but not M (maybe those programs were breaking rules).

Again, maybe its just b/c we only hear the bad news.

Contact is on the coaches, unless we're referring to the week between RR's firing and Hoke's hiring. It's so early in the process, though, it's hard to make out what and who is even legit yet.

As for recruits being contacted, the coaches will get on that when they aren't so focused on the current class. I'm sure it'll be top priority the day after signing day. Most guys don't commit before at least June and July at the earliest. A lot of top in state guys from next year either have offers or have been shown interest, fwiw (O'Brien, Ross, Godin). The Cass Tech guys (Richardson, Jenkins-Stone) will consider us as long as contact is made at some point. I wouldn't worry about them at this point.

This was discussed at the time, but other programs were breaking the rules.  When guys like Chris Wormley were complaining that they hadn't heard from Michigan, it was because that period was a no-contact period.

Of course, other schools were contacting Wormley because most schools out there cheat . . . but Michigan, being on probation and with Rodriguez seemingly on the up-and-up, wasn't one of those rule-breaking schools when it came to contacting recruits.
