Chris Bryant (Tibia), Kaleb Ringer (Knee) Out For The Season
According to Chris Balas at Rivals (TheWolverine):
@Balas_Wolverine OL Chris Bryant out for the yr with a fractured tibia; LB Kaleb Ringer to redshirt in 2012 after successful knee surgery
Hurts depth, for sure.
[BISB - Added Ringer to title]

Shit.
Speedy recovery Chris.
August 23rd, 2012 at 1:59 PM ^
Bad luck hits again. I'm glad Ringer had successful surgery, and I'm glad that Pipkins is back in practice and all is well. I wish Chris a successful surgery and rehab and I hope he comes back stronger than ever.
August 23rd, 2012 at 1:59 PM ^
Any word whether Bryant's fracture was a practice injury or a stress fracture?
August 23rd, 2012 at 2:01 PM ^
Well, poop.
I'm sure there's a redshirt sophomore from the 2010 class who can take his place on the depth chart...oh, wait...
August 23rd, 2012 at 2:11 PM ^
Hope Kalis is as college-ready as recruiting analysts say he is
August 23rd, 2012 at 6:31 PM ^
His recruiting photograph makes me think so. He's so bulky in the legs that it looks like someone messed up the aspect ratio.
August 23rd, 2012 at 2:00 PM ^
Might want to edit your title to include Ringer redshirting.
August 23rd, 2012 at 2:02 PM ^
Does he get a medical redshirt or a regular redshirt?
August 23rd, 2012 at 2:04 PM ^
Regular. You can only get a medical if you have previously used your redshirt. If you haven't used your redshirt, then that is used.
August 23rd, 2012 at 2:08 PM ^
Not sure about this. There was recently an MSU freshman who applied for a medical hardship waiver. Maybe someone out there remembers his name, I don't.
August 23rd, 2012 at 2:42 PM ^
This makes sense. But you can only apply for a medical hardship waiver at the end of the season anyway, so Ringer would take his regular redshirt this year, apply for a medical hardship, and possibly preserve the regular redshirt for sometime in the future (if needed).
Don't know if that's the way it works, but makes sense to me (and I admittedly have only a superficial understanding of these rules).
August 23rd, 2012 at 2:48 PM ^
A medical RS and medical hardship waiver are two different things. Medical hardship waivers are for players who suffer career ending injuries and can no longer play football, but are still get a scholarship.
August 23rd, 2012 at 3:02 PM ^
I misspoke. I meant medical redshirt. But it's possible he got a hardship.
August 23rd, 2012 at 8:56 PM ^
You were correct. A medical hardship waiver is what people are generally referring to when they say "medical redshirt." I believe Ken is thinking of a medical exemption, which operates as he described.
August 23rd, 2012 at 5:41 PM ^
Ok, so I got my terminology mixed up. Point is, I would guess that you would RS Ringer the "regular" way now and apply for a medical RS at the end of the season in order to preserve the regular RS for down the road, if needed.
August 23rd, 2012 at 4:36 PM ^
I think you're confused. A medical hardship waiver is used to transfer without having to sit out because of medical problems in the family. DeAnthony Arnett applied for one (he's a sophomore) and received it. Burbridge is the only freshman to be injured and he's likely going to take a redshirt.
August 23rd, 2012 at 4:45 PM ^
What Atnett got was a "hardship waiver" it is different from a "medical hardship waiver."
August 23rd, 2012 at 4:50 PM ^
Yeah - it looks like Sparty's the one who's confused. Huh, Sparty?!
August 23rd, 2012 at 5:15 PM ^
Ah gotcha, but there weren't any MSU freshman (or MSU players for that matter) that applied for a medical hardship this year. Tyler Hoover applied last year and got a 6th year, and he might apply at the end of this year for a 7th year. I think he was thinking of Burbridge, but he's going to get a regular redshirt if he doesn't play.

Team members are drifting away at astronomical speeds, aparently!
This team needs a blue shift, pronto! Bring these kids together!

Probably a regular.

Make up your mind!

Possibly.

This is the downside of physical practices. Not saying we shouldn't do it Hoke's way, but I think we got very lucky last year to avoid these sorts of injuries. Pretty big blow to our already thin OL depth, but at least he wasn't looking at too much playing time. We just have to hope to god we can stay healthy. Hopefully he can recover fully & come back strong next year.
August 23rd, 2012 at 2:03 PM ^
What's a non-physical practice? If you're contrasting Hoke to Rodriguez, both their teams suffered from unfortunate preseason injuries, such as Troy Woolfolk. It's football. People get hurt.

Bass, Antonio
August 23rd, 2012 at 2:15 PM ^
Is he going to play QB this year?
August 23rd, 2012 at 3:31 PM ^
August 23rd, 2012 at 2:34 PM ^
I think to this day, his was the most disappointing injury to me. Not just because he was such a good player, but it was career ending for him.
August 23rd, 2012 at 2:52 PM ^
Other very sad injuries OTTOMH:
Daydrion Taylor
Tony Boles
Tripp Welbourne
August 23rd, 2012 at 3:05 PM ^
Walter Smith?
August 23rd, 2012 at 3:25 PM ^
Tony Boles was one of my favorites. I still wish he had been able to play one more year.

It was a freak accident vs. Iowa.
August 23rd, 2012 at 3:32 PM ^
I'm a Cowboys fan when it comes to the NFL and they have a host of injuries to mostly their key players (Witten, Austin, Jenkins, Dez, Ware, the whole 1st string interior line). When people start panicking, I remind them that the whole league is having the same or similar problems at this point because they are PLAYING FOOTBALL. The backups are getting paid/on scholarships as well. At least Michigan has been lucky that most of their starters are in tact.
Side note: I think its awesome that both of my teams get the champs week 1, but unlike Michigan, winning or losing game 1 won't necessarily drastically change the direction in which the season can go. Cannot wait for next week!
August 23rd, 2012 at 2:05 PM ^
Yeah, but the reverse is just as bad.
Last year USC had nearly no contact in their practices because of depth. Early in the season, they beat Minnesota by 2, Utah by single digits at home, and lost to ASU, who finished under .500 for the season. Had SC played stronger opponents early in the season, they maybe have started the year 3-3. They almost did anyway, even though they played absolutely nobody.
August 23rd, 2012 at 2:12 PM ^
If you do not hit in practice...then you will not be able to tackle or block very well in the games...and you will fold in the 4th quarter. Unfortunately, this is football and is the way it always has been. 2 years from now when the OL depth is built back up, something like this will be more easily absorbed. Its a depth and (past) recruiting issue more than a "too physical practice" issue IMO.
August 23rd, 2012 at 2:01 PM ^
So I'm guessing this means Joey B. and Kalis will be backing up both guard spots?
August 23rd, 2012 at 2:08 PM ^
That's what I was thinking as well. Both of them are going to need to be ready to step in this season. I think Joey at LG and Kalis at RG is the most likely, but they should be able to both if need be.
August 23rd, 2012 at 2:01 PM ^
So who is Omameh's backup now? Does this mean Kalis has to backup both RG and RT?
August 23rd, 2012 at 2:33 PM ^
Gunderson, Burzynski, Kalis will be the backups at guard IMO. I think Mags will be a backup at tackle.
August 23rd, 2012 at 2:39 PM ^
Gunderson is 6'7" though, so i think Magnuson would be more likely to back-up at G than him.
August 23rd, 2012 at 2:03 PM ^
Hope both get well and are ready to kick some butt next year. Bryant's injury deffinatly hurts; maybe part of the reason why all the O-line shuffling. Hopefully the year off doesn't hurt either players development too much.
August 23rd, 2012 at 2:05 PM ^
My guess would be Magnuson, or perhaps Burzynski will back up both sides.
EDIT: This reply was intended for the post above yours.
August 23rd, 2012 at 2:57 PM ^
I noticed on Countdown to Kickoff Day 9 that Burzynski was playing RG with the # 2 unit in one of the plays and Kalis was at LG.
August 23rd, 2012 at 3:44 PM ^
"I noticed on countdown to kickoff [something useful and/or interesting]"
-Nobody ever.
If you saw something, it was probably a mirage.

It would only be an issue if either player sought a sixth year of eligibilty. Ringer still has his regular redshirt to use. Bryant does not (right?). Bryant, if I'm right that he redshirted last year, could apply for a medical redshirt after his fifth year on campus. He'd presumably get it given that he missed an entire year (you don' t have to miss that much) due to an injury (you have to miss time due to an injury, which is where things will get a little interesting w/ Gardner).
