Chris Bryant (Tibia), Kaleb Ringer (Knee) Out For The Season

According to Chris Balas at Rivals (TheWolverine):

@Balas_Wolverine OL Chris Bryant out for the yr with a fractured tibia; LB Kaleb Ringer to redshirt in 2012 after successful knee surgery

Hurts depth, for sure.

Don't know if that's the way it works, but makes sense to me (and I admittedly have only a superficial understanding of these rules).

This is the downside of physical practices. Not saying we shouldn't do it Hoke's way, but I think we got very lucky last year to avoid these sorts of injuries. Pretty big blow to our already thin OL depth, but at least he wasn't looking at too much playing time. We just have to hope to god we can stay healthy. Hopefully he can recover fully & come back strong next year.

I'm a Cowboys fan when it comes to the NFL and they have a host of injuries to mostly their key players (Witten, Austin, Jenkins, Dez, Ware, the whole 1st string interior line). When people start panicking, I remind them that the whole league is having the same or similar problems at this point because they are PLAYING FOOTBALL. The backups are getting paid/on scholarships as well. At least Michigan has been lucky that most of their starters are in tact.

Side note: I think its awesome that both of my teams get the champs week 1, but unlike Michigan, winning or losing game 1 won't necessarily drastically change the direction in which the season can go. Cannot wait for next week!

Yeah, but the reverse is just as bad.

Last year USC had nearly no contact in their practices because of depth.  Early in the season, they beat Minnesota by 2, Utah by single digits at home, and lost to ASU, who finished under .500 for the season.  Had SC played stronger opponents early in the season, they maybe have started the year 3-3.   They almost did anyway, even though they played absolutely nobody.

If you do not hit in practice...then you will not be able to tackle or block very well in the games...and you will fold in the 4th quarter.  Unfortunately, this is football and is the way it always has been.  2 years from now when the OL depth is built back up, something like this will be more easily absorbed.  Its a depth and (past) recruiting issue more than a "too physical practice" issue IMO.

That's what I was thinking as well. Both of them are going to need to be ready to step in this season. I think Joey at LG and Kalis at RG is the most likely, but they should be able to both if need be.

It would only be an issue if either player sought a sixth year of eligibilty.  Ringer still has his regular redshirt to use.  Bryant does not (right?).  Bryant, if I'm right that he redshirted last year, could apply for a medical redshirt after his fifth year on campus.  He'd presumably get it given that he missed an entire year (you don' t have to miss that much) due to an injury (you have to miss time due to an injury, which is where things will get a little interesting w/ Gardner).
