Chris Barnett Tweet About Leaving U-M
Well played, Twitter-man.
Meh, looks like we were posting this news simultaneously.
Guess it's no worse than Facebook.
If true, tis could be the first attrition that really hurts a bit. Thin at TE, and he was one of the best prospects from our transition class.
Looks like this recruiting class might end up at 35 rather than worrying how to get 26. (Yes, I know you can't recruit that many).
Fingers Crossed (Come on Ricardo Miller)
I realize when there is a new coach there is attrition but this shouldn't be happening with incoming Freshman!! What is that 3-4 already? What does this say to the current class that you are trying to recruit?
There's a lot of playing time, and you won't have any competition in the class immediately before you.
What does this say to the current recruiting class? It says that there's another roster slot and more PT available for TE's! It also means Williams absolutely stays at the TE position once he gets on campus.
I don't think this affects the recruiting karma of this year's class at all. If this Barnett transfer talk is all true, I don't think it's that surprising given Barnett's nomadic background. I hope he stays, though, and rehabs the knee, loses a few pounds, and becomes the next great Michigan TE.
Well that stings. Wouldn't contribute this year because of the ACL and weight, but really, really liked him down the road. Maybe back in it for Ron Thompson?
i still dont think we need 3 TE in a class ever, just pick 2 up again next year
Thompson has expressed that he's interested in coming to Michigan. There is value for having those type of kids on the roster, especially when they have respectable profiles. If Barnett is indeed leaving, I am not opposed to a 3rd TE in 2012.
Hope they have maintained a good relationship with Ron Thompson, maybe back on the board.
That comment should have come 2nd; best of luck to Chris wherever he ends up and with whatever he ends up doing.
That was unexpected (for me I mean). That dude was recruiting heavy for us and now he is gone? Damn, that sucks. If this is true, good luck Chris (but I hope it is another of his jokes...)
I believe he and Zeke Pike were 7on7 teammates and he was after him pretty hard. I had heard rumors of Barnett being homesick (in addition to when Koger mentioned it on CtK). This is too bad really. I thought Barnett could have been a great TE in the new offense.
Correct me if I am wrong... But, wasn't this guy all over the place with his recruitment and also transfer happy in high school. I hope this isn't true, but maybe some underlying issues here?
5 scjools in 4 years and committed to, what , Oklahoma and Arkansas before UM.
That tweet has been deleted by Chris and then he says "To all those who responded, thanks". So either that means, he got hacked and was thanking people who let him know, or he actually left and was getting messages of "good luck". I'd definitely take this with a HUGE grain of salt.
I think, to the previous one asking for assessment of his twitter name.
Though now his account is locked, where it was open to everyone minutes ago, so that's interesting.
may be looking to much into this but looking at the pattern, bad conditioning = kid is going to get alot of pressure to shape up or ship out. Shame TE we were a bit thin at, looks like Ron Thompson was still in the mix for a reason.
I'm going crosseyed trying to read your post. Increase your font size.
He had one, and most likely wouldn't have played this year. What I'm not seeing is people mentioning P. Brown at TE rather than DE as a result.
He's having knee problems correct?
Keep your mobile telecommunications device handy.
Dear University of Michigan football players:
The world of social media is a crazy place. So if you intend to transfer, could you please do it the conventional way and let the athletic department make the announcement? Then we can all get the information at the same time and avoid all these cryptic tweets and agonizing rumors. Thanks!
WK
I agree with the sentiment, however "I'm no longer at the University of Michigan" isn't all that cryptic
But he apparently tweeted after that something like, "thanks to everyone for responding." Can't tell you exactly because now his account is locked.
Edit: the actual tweet is about five posts down.
Which means it could not have been updated yet or he was hacked.
Tony and Je'Ron are not on it.
Edit: Barnett is actually gone. Confirmed by M athletic department. Dammit.
though obviously the athletic department is what we call the "horse's mouth."
I read it and thought he meant he was taking a daytrip.
Currently I'm no longer at U of M but I will be back shortly.
/delusional
I don't think we should take another TE. W e have two guys who were te/wr in high school as well. Clark and Brown. If they feel another is needed, make a switch this year. Taking 3 te next year is to many and destroys any kind of recruiting balance. Two should be taken the following year if they still need more.
If this is true it is unfortunate, i was really looking forward to seeing this kid in the future...Oh well, can we get a nice warm welcome for Ronald Thompson? haha Remember he was Shane Morris's and Terry's teammate in the 7on7's. Also in my opinion we should move Funchess to WR because of his great size. Then we would have room for another TE.
settle down your font.
this is a huge hit. he was a really highly rated prospect at a very thin position.
I coach a travel baseball team and realize that everything needs to fit. There are million reasons and in the end, they need to be happy with their decision on where to play. It is much better to have a kid transfer than have a kid (or parent of that kid) be unhappy.
Good luck. I think Ron Thompson is now a lock to go U of M.
He bounced around in high school. They took him because they needed his skills and they probably laid the law down when he got there. Because he was always coddled, it was a drastic change thus unhappy. Always best if those who are unhappy leave.
Best of luck to these guys.
Brady Hoke's family values aren't good enough.

this sucks. I guess bring on Ron Thompson then.
This is not good.
I coach t-ball and I agree.
according to rivals (info in header) the athletic department confirmed that he's gone.
can asume that Hoke new about these departures, ie Posada, Je'Ron, thats why he has been talking about 26-28 this year. Maybe just me being delusional but whatever gets me through the day.
will not tweet such things. Dang.
At 6'5" 278lbs it sounds like someone might have been asked to move to the interior line. Maybe Chris didn't want to play on the interior.
I checked the roster 20 minutes ago, he was there. Now? Not so much.
I am definitely feeling our 2012 class could hit 28. Ron Thompson has to be in the mix.
Does anyone know when the players get their grades from summer classes? I'm wondering if that has something to do with this.
a) more recruits
b) MOAR POINTING
Barnett was wildly overweight when he showed up on campus. When he was injured he gained a lot weight. I think that combined with other underlying issues he couldn't bounce back and as unfortunate as it is to see him go, I had my doubts about the impact he could make. This was expected.
because he was injured. But why did he need to leave Michigan? He couldn't redshirt and lose the weight over the next year? Just being overweight (Will Campbell anyone?) doesn't mean you need to transfer.
I'm just saying that it added complications to his experience at UM and maybe his impact ceiling was drastically lowered due to injury and weight gain. I saw him on campus a month ago and he was all flab.
Speculation about true freshman DE Heintzman moving to TE starts right, about.......now
Ron Thompson we need you.
Really a shame. He had a chance to be the best player in that class. I hope it isn't because of his injury.
that for 2012 - 2013, we're going to have a very young, but very talented team.
...we don't have the same rate of attrition in future years. I love thinking about how good the recruits will be but we eventually need to break this cycle and have some of these guys stick around. We can't be the youngest team in the Big Ten forever right?
Better get Ricardo Miller on the Gittleson plan.
I wonder if the coaches will have room for ron thompson now.
Next year leaves us with maybe Brandon Moore (who hasn't seen the field much), Ricardo Miller, several true freshmen, and a group of walk-ons. This will probably limit what the coaches want to do on offense somewhat. Still, I wish Barnett luck wherever he ends up.
Those Who Stay Will Be Champions
I think that's a theme that will resonate through this season. Michigan's on the verge of a breakthrough so it's a little disappointing to see future potential forsake the glory. Still, I wish Chris the best wherever he ends up and a speedy recovery from the ACL tear.
We already have a few options on the roster to replace Barnett and I didn't think we were going to do 2/3 tight end sets very often to begin with, but probably mostly 2 TE/U back or 2 TE or 1 TE sets now...
This is getting ridiculous...
First guy thats leaving under hoke that I'm truly sad about. I thought he was going to be a beast at TE.
First guy thats leaving under hoke that I'm truly sad about. I thought he was going to be a beast at TE.
When do players count towards the APR? Is it after they official sign in February? After they enroll and start classes? After they start fall practice or we have played a game?
Wondering if Jones, Posada and Barnett count against us.
I handle these situations the same as Brian's philosophy on roster weight updates:
All commitments are good and all transfers are good. If a guy commits, it means the coaches likes him and we really need him, if he leaves it's because he wasn't cutting it or doesn't want to be here or is just a bad fit and he'll be replaced by someone better.
2) GMAT is OK with it, 3) he performs as well during the season as he did in summer camps at TE, 4) Washington and Stanford are OK with it
This is not a half-bad plan
