Chip Kelly supposedly working on a deal to become next head coach of Tampa Bay Bucs...wtf?

Submitted by The Baughz on

Per some twitter reports, Chip Kelly will be the next coach at Tampa Bay. I find this absurd. It makes me wonder if some serious sanctions are coming the Ducks way.

Sounds like he simply wants to go to the NFL. He had an interview with the dolphins before they made their hire. Players found out about the buccaneers deal today around three. Consesus among duck players is that it will be done soon. Hold on to those hats in Eugene...they could have quite a few players decommitt or leave.

Do you guys think he'll try to run the same offense there Assuming he would take the job? I find that hard to believe.

That was my exact thought. I dont know how you could run that type of offense against an NFL defense that  has exceptional speed at every position.

If Kelly utlimately winds up in the NFL, I expect (a) Oregon to be smacked with major sanctions, and (b) for him to fail pretty badly in the NFL.  His system makes sense in college because most teams are poor at tackling in space and have a hard time preparing for that offense.  But in the pros, teams can tackle guys in space at a much higher clip and you are not going to survive with a 1 or 2-read passing scheme.

While it doesn't explain it all, and I agree there is an imbalance in the improvement, you have to take into account the time rules and how they affect the scores.  The clock doesn't stop for first downs in the NFL which runs a lot of extra clock off, especially on long plays.  There is also a lot more hurry up in college that adds to the scoring.

His system makes sense because his numbers work.  QB running threat means either play down one in the box or one on one on the outside.  After that he makes everything looks the same which makes it hard for a defense to read.  Any NFL offense needs talent to make it go.  His isn't asking anything new outside of the QB...and all of a sudden there's a glut of athletic former/current QBs thanks to guys like Chip Kelly.

A "passing spread" team doesn't necessarily throw more than it rushes.  It just means that the QB is primarily a thrower.  People have been talking about Kelly's offense like it's just like RR's, when the role of the QB is dramatically different.
