What hammer? Kids still commit to USC and OSU, don't they? They still play 12 games a year, many of which are nationally televised, yes? I'm afraid the NCAA's standard "penalties" simply don't affect programs in ways that really matter to coaches and players.

There's an interesting piece from John Canzano at the Oregonian on his theory regarding Kelly's repeated flirtations with NFL vacanies - (LINK) - and I didn't see it posted anywhere else.

Long story short, the author theorizes that we're watching Kelly gain a knowledge of the interview process for NFL vacanies, and that there isn't much question that he would make this jump one day. Canzano believes, however, that his is after a particular job, one that many current and former New Englanders would want - Bill Belichick's.

It's an interesting idea considering that the Patriots have consulted with Kelly on a number of occasions regarding the implementation of no-huddle concepts in their own offense. I am not sure if it is an idea that has legs, but the article is an intriguing piece and worth a read.

Honestly, I've never seen why a college coach who has built a dynasty would consider jumping to the NFL (except for maybe when you definitely know that heavy sanctions are coming, like Carroll). Once you've achieved that status, the recruiting advantages are huge relative to 90% of your competition. That's very different from the NFL, where the draft and free agency are great levelers. I think Saban realized this pretty damn quickly when he coached the Fins. It's possible that NFL teams will end up paying more (although w/Oregon, even that's not clear given the availability of Nike $), but c'mon - these guys are all millionaires, anyway, it's not like they're hurting for cash.

I am pessimistic about that.  I interpret Kelly staying at Oregon as a sign of confidence that sanctions will be insignificant.  If there is any LOIC or FTM, Oregon will absolutely have to fire him as a sign of penance, ala OSU and Tressel.  I just don't think that it is coming.

I think recruiting has a lot to do with it.  NFL coaches work insane hours during the season, just like college coaches, but during the offseason they can get away from it (at least some of the time) whereas college coaches are always recruiting.  The recruiting process never ends for a coach; you just move on to the next class after signing day.

1) He's never won a NC, even though Oregon is dirty, has the best facilities of any team, and has an endless supply of Nike money and uniform-flair

2) He's a system guy, who needs a GM and owner who understand this. He would need 2-3 years to build anNFL team that is 100% into his system (WR's who block, OL that sprint to the line every play, a team that will look to the sidelines for the audibles...). That's not easy to do in the NFL and will take time. If this fails, the new coach needs another 2-3 years to undo that mess

3) He needs to build an NFL staff (particularly on D) that is strong and wants to learn under him. This isn't the easiest thing to do when you have a unique system

4) The spread and tempo ideas that Kelly uses are slowly going into the NFL into hybrid systems (see Pats and Redskins). Owners think, let me get an safe coaching hire and then hopefully get RG3, Luck, Wilson in the draft and boom...playoff without the risk, expense, and ego of Kelly.

He won't get an NFL job, unless it's with somebody that has sucked for many years like the Jaguars.

Would like to see the Browns think out of the box, but would also like to see Cheaty McUniformz leave the college game.  Especially since he seems to be able to get away with just about anythying when it comes to recruiting "high"-jinx

If you think the NCAA was slow to sanction Miami (YTM), Ohio State, and (*insert name of the renegade SEC program of your choice here*), and then only acted with wrist slaps when action was unavoidable, just what do you think they will do to the favored program of the UNI4MZ provider of so manyother big programs of the NCAA?

Oregon isn't going to be hit with anything that would be considered significantly impacting to their program; they already know that, and that is why they and their masters at Nike are able to stuff a lot more money up Mr. Kelly's caboose to keep him in Eugene.  The NCAA has proven remarkably adept at not biting the hands that feed them.

Oregon draws a lot of water in this town, Lebowski...you don't draw s***.

I'm surprised, given that he seemed open to interviewing for every NFL job out there (or at least three of them).  But I think he is better-suited for college.
