Chengelis on Start of Spring Practice

Submitted by Free Hot Dog Man on

While Harbaugh certainly will have a better idea what his personnel is like and where the puzzle pieces will fit, expect him to come up with a depth chart written in easily erasable pencil by the end of spring practices.

Perhaps more important for the players the next few weeks is to display a level of toughness Harbaugh enthusiasts believe he instantly will bring. Playing with toughness is something that has distinguished Harbaugh teams in the past, and unquestionably he intends to instill that at Michigan.

Here's a look at what to watch during the spring:

Somewhat glad we are having a break after a couple spring practices. Kids will get a little time to reflect on the first few and know what they have to do to impress when they get back from break. And we will see who was chillin while on break and who was still getting their workouts in while on the weeklong bender.

This is in the quote above, but I feel it is worth reiterating because one of the ways he historically seems to instill this is to make the results visible to everyone by tracking performance. It's part of a larger formula, but perhaps one of the most important elements of it, in my opinion. I think this will lead to some interesting surprises when it comes time to construct a working depth chart (which as you know may or may not be the depth chart per se).

This is one of the main things that have been missing over the past several seasons.  How many times did we watch the team just seem to give up and fold when a game started getting tough?

I'll bet we won't see players coming off the field laughing and smiling after dropping a pass or making some other kind of mistake.

One thing is for sure, with JH as coach, wins will not be just a statistic.

I am expecting big things from this team, and coaching staff! The season can not come soon enough for me.i believe anything short of 9 wins, with at least 1 of them coming against OSU or MSU will be a failure in my opinion.

Even with all of the obvious question marks surrounding this team there is one thing most of us know that follow the program. This staff is clearly better than the last and there is no better HC to turn this thing around quickly. QB. OL, RB, Secondary, and kicking game; that's a lot of quesions to answer by fall. I think we will be pleasantly surprised by the RB position and OL. QB may come down to finding a game manager that doesn't turn the ball over and converts on third down. Those last two killed us over the last two years!

"QB that doesn't turn the ball over and converts on third down."

i agree but much easier said than done.  the goals of every QB are limiting turnovers and converting on 3rd downs - keep your squad on the field and moving chains.

hopefully harbaugh instills confidence in his QBs and schemes around their weaknesses (hoke failed miserably in both areas - this guy will not, but its still a process),  but i would not expect miracles overnight.  hes gotta undo all of hokes staffs damage + and then build these guys back up to be competent D1 QBs, thats no small task

that toughness is something that makes a football player, and the right toughness is something that is recruited, not just physical but mental toughness.  I think all the players Michigan has had, with a few exceptions obviously, over the last 6-8 yrs have toughness.  The trick, imo, is to have a coach that translates that individual toughness into a team toughness and a game plan that harnesses it properly.

I know I sound like Denzel Washington in "Remember the Titans" to some folks, but getting someone to be tough within the confines of the right game plan (anti-Gerg, anti-Borges) is the key and Harbaugh's history is just that.  Coach up the team, develop the players, make them more of a team than the previous staff had.

I firmly believe that one of the first things we're going to see is actual accountability for results (or lack thereof) that never existed under the previous regime.  I dont think Harbaugh gives a shit if the players or even the coaches like him or not and that was priority #1 for Hoke.  I think Harbaugh will earn the respect of the team exactly as Bo did - by demanding excellence and not accepting mediocrity - not by being their friend.

He may not call people out pubicly but you can be damn sure you'll see movement in the depth chart and playing time based on results on the field and feelings get hurt in the process - so be it.

He plasters everything on the weight room walls, and in the locker rooms, and hallways. Every player knows where they stand. He also puts each player in categories and each player knows what they have to do to get moved up. This is going to be fun to watch.

I think you may be missing my point. In your reference to the coaches, I assume you're hinting at on-field/in-season game and practice prep. I'm referring to pre-spring ball and summer workouts controlled by Wellman. For example, a guy who was late to morning workouts or repeatedly missed weight would often have to wear them for workouts. Gave a sense of accountability because it's pretty awkward being the only one in red when your 114 teammates had blue on.

Accountability is going to be right there for everyone to see in the form of Harbaughs charts and competitions. If you slack everyone is going to know it. This is a great way to get every kid playing, practicing and studying to the best of his ability.

This coaching staff is just more organized than the last. And it will show on the field.
