Charles Woodson: 1st and only member of the 50/20 Club

Submitted by Leaders And Best on

Charles Woodson notched his 20th career sack tonight making him the 1st player in NFL history to have 50+ career interceptions (58) and 20 career sacks. Only one other player is even in the 40/20 club: Ronde Barber with 47 INTs and 28 sacks.

Ronde Barber at 28 is the only CB with more. I think the next nearest CB has 15. A couple caveats: sacks were not kept as an official stat until 1982. The last couple have come at safety, but at the same time, Barber racked up so many because the Tampa scheme had him lining up as slot CB so much and blitzing from there.

That really is amazing to think about - the ONLY player. Although it does seem like he would have more than 20 sacks. Regardless, another congratulations in order for him.

They still call it "Peyton Manning's Heisman."  They never remember that Manning lying down like a dog against Nebraska in the Orange Bowl cost Michigan half of the National Championship.

BTW, UT fans love it when people point out Manning's Oranage Bowl performance.

Or you could say Ronde Barber is the only one with 40 INTs and 25 Sacks, and Woodson is now 5 sacks away from that.

When I was in HS, I would occasionally see those games on one of the channels (Was it called "Classic Sports?") and then ask my coach, who blocked for OJ and Mike Holmgren at USC and played a bit in the NFL afterwards.  He had some things to say about several guys, but he said Night Train was considered the meanest guy around at that time (not sure if their time in the NFL overlapped).

I flipped to the NFL Network, in time to see the Charles interview already-in-progress; at that point he was saying he still enjoys palying the game---did it sound to you like he has no intentions of retiring this season?  That's the impression I got.

Also, I missed the entire Raiders-Chiefs game (BTW, final was an upset, Raiders 24-Chiefs 20) while watching college hoops tonight.  But it sounded like (besides the sack) Charles had a great game tonight.

Without a doubt, the greatest Michigan defensive player I've witnessed in my 40 seasons of attending games at Michigan Stadium.

Living in Denver, I have had multiple arguments in the last week about Champ Bailey vs. Charles Woodson. Both sure HOF'ers but the Denver crowd slants heavily toward Bailey.

To me, it's not that close. Woodson has been better longer and his highes have been higher.

This record-breaking night for Woodson should help my argument at the office tomorrow!

yep continue informing the uninformed.  woodson cannot be compared to anyone of his generation, bailey was good but not even close.  spot on, his highs were much higher and 2 has done it consistently for almost 20 years.  rod woodson is the only other modern DB with all around game and body of work to compare with 2 (whos really counting strictly "cover" CBs like prime time and darrell green).

dominating competition at all levels over 20 years speaks to longevity, never mind hes never lost knack for big plays and impacting all games - and those crazy stats / records made more impressive with most teams trying to avoid the dude.  truly generational type talent

I was there!  I saw the ball sailing up and way out of bounds and then Woodson go up for it, and I was thinking, "yeah, right."  Then he and ball disappeared into the sideline, there was a little commotion over there, and I was worried he came down awkwardly or something.  I couldn't believe it when the ref signaled Michigan ball -- it didn't seem like a possible outcome.  That was some Stretch Armstrong shit.

Charles was, is, and always will be a boss! His 3 years at UM everyone in the stands knew they were watching greatness. I was in 8th grade when he was a junior, but I remember both his OSU games at the Big House like they were yesterday. The pick was in my end zone and I'll never forget when he took the punt back. I don't think I've ever seen a crowd go that nuts. I was jumping up and down and my dad was too.

Man, I miss seeing that guy suit up in maize n blue. Now I has a sad.
