Channel Your Anger: Mark Dantonio Press Conference

Submitted by Michael Scarn on

I think it's healthy to step back and get some perspective on a day like today.  At least this prick is not Michigan's head coach:

For anyone who missed it, Sparty trailed Eastern late in the 3rd quarter.  They looked abysmal.  Dantonio should be pissed but it takes a real knob to do something like this.  The B1G is wide open, and Michigan's for the taking.

Go. Blue.

Since Dantonio arrived in EL, the media have adopted Sparty as "The Little Football Team that Could."  The media have indirectly helped Sparty recruit, and celebrated their victories with them.  Dantonio, in his arrogance, has no idea how much he owes the media for his success.

Now, Dantonio is biting the hand that has fed him for so long.  He is telling the media who have propped up his team since he arrived in EL that he is better than they are, and he is doing it in a blatant and classless manner.

My prediction: slow burn, crescendo, full Dantonio meltdown.  It should start to get really interesting after Sparty's trip to Ann Arbor.

Good to send a message to your fan base and players that what went on out there wasn't acceptable.

However, I do agree with the poster who said that the media has been a huge ally of his and his program since day 1. If the ski mask thing happens at Michigan, I don't know if the coach there ever lives it down. As it was he got to cherry pick the best players to keep on the squad and the story basically blew over in a week or two.

He'd be wise to take that into consideration. The guy has sort of a dour negative way about him to begin with. No sense perpetuating it.

I don't blame Dantonio one bit.

Listen, I don't like that asshat anymore than the rest of you, but how else was he supposed to answer these idiotic questions?

Something must be terribly wrong in the universe because the last two times I've heard Mark Dantonio address the public, I've agreed with him.  (The twitter stupidity and this press conference).

Those were dickish responses, but he's also pretty pissed about the performance and I doubt he really likes the media.  These post-game press conferences where reporters ask dumb questions and coaches give dumb answers never riled me up.  He's a jerk because he called out Mike Hart, because he runs his mouth off every chance he can get about being disrespected as a program despite having, what, two years of sustained success, and for taking shots at other programs whenever it is convenient.  Oh yeah, and talking over an assistant coach at a clinic because he didn't like the direction that the coach was taking the conversation AFTER HE ALREADY SPOKE.  Plus, he's a good coach, not a great one, yet he acts as if making it to the first B1G game means he's now a statesman for the conference.  That's why he's a jerk.

...I'd probably feel and act the same way.  Lots of coaches would:

Until a couple of years ago, he would routinely storm out of press conferences, kick reporters out of the sessions ("Don't be offended," says one of Bo's friends. "He'd kick Millie out, too"), make himself unavailable and order his players not to talk. Talking very softly once at a press conference, he was asked to speak up. "I'm speaking as loudly as I can," said Bo softly—and arrogantly. And in a memorable set-to on Oct. 1, 1979, Schembechler gave an absolutely unnecessary push to a publicity-seeking college newspaper reporter.

but who cares about Michigan State right now.  And for the record, that looks like a coach who is angry that his team is playing like shit, like really angry.  Not the "everything is rosey as long as we play Michigan football" bullshit that we are being fed like baby food.  I see him being accountable and telling it like it is.

Personally, I want to see our presser and see Al Borges answer some questions, some tough ones.  Hopefully he is as pissed as Dantonio is right there.

Here's the thing . . . what Dantonio did would have been fine if it was just a one-off thing that he used to express his frustration with his team and the press's reaction to it.  Someone like Steve Spurrier or Pete Carroll could have effectively pulled this off.

But Dantonio's perpetually pissy demeanor with just about everybody just about all the time means that there is no goodwill stored for a tantrum like this.

I've seen so many of these coach outbursts or anger towards reporters at press conferences I'm beginning to think it's a little bit like the coach who goes off on the ref and gets a technical to motivate his team. Sure it doesn't have the same-game impact, but it's sending a message. The coaches know that the kids see all of their media comments now. The kids know they're not allowed to talk like that at pressers, so when they see the coach break the rules, they think "wow, this must be serious"... Or at least that's maybe what the coach is hoping happens if he goes off. ...or I'll take Pricks In East Lansing for $200, Alex.

Bill always borders on looking like this in his press conferences. Instead of being rude, he becomes boring. So boring that the questions don't matter because his responses and demeanor is so boring. This guy came off rude with one word answers and "next question" remarks. One thing I learned from watching a Tom Watson interview, if you make a statement about what you thought of the performance and the key points you can take away then you don't have to answer questions from reporters. Hoke did this somewhat by making the remarks before questions were posed to him during yesterday's post-game. On the other hand, saying EMU played hard and we didn't excute aren't adequate to use this style. Learn from Bill and learn from Tom because Image is everything.

His team played pretty poorly and is going to be in trouble this year. College football reporters are annoying on a good day.  This crew of reporters was asking dumb questions for yes-no answers. These dummies should have been asking more "How",  "Why" questions, drrrrrrrrrrrrr.

but the vast majority of so-called "professional sports journalists" are vacuous, inane dingleberries who are better suited to covering some English princess' breasts, to quote the only guy here who's older than me.

I hate to be that guy (anonymous credible rumor mongerer) but I have an acquaintance who's mother was a nurse at the hospital when Dantonio was having his heart issues after "Little Giants."  She says he's one of the biggest pricks she's ever met, and she cares not for football.  I guess he was short tempered and kept demanding answers about why his blood pressure was being taken, etc., which are obviously part of checking a patient in.  The fact that Dantonio is a dick and acts like one doesn't surprise me.  It only surprises me when I hear a story about Dantonio showing a miniscule level of class and I'm immediately skeptical.

I work in the medical field and would HATE to have any kind of HIPAA rumors traced back to me.  I'm inclined to call bravo sierra any time I hear of gossip involving a celebrity, athlete, or similar when they were being seen because there's just too much liability involved.  Not saying it didn't happen, just saying I hope that someone wasn't dumb enough to share it

He's just generally a  pissy guy. You couple that with the  hate/envy of Michigan, you get his attitude toward us. Actually feel sorry for people like  this at times, you have to wonder what's the point of it all if life is always so miserable?
