alternate headline: man does job
I have to read all this bs about a bad title!! Whatever, I just went through this whole thread trying to find something informative about Zak Irvin! Ya, that didn't happen thanks to all the title police.
Been in the original post?
But not in the way that you might think
This thread title is pretty much the example of what not to do when naming a thread.
No, I think we all decided that the worst title of all time would be "Sports" or something like that. Though pretty darn horrible, this one isn't the worst.
Someone has to post the obligatory Justin Feagin thread title example. I'm too lazy.
Thread title FAIL!
What should I title my threads?
Please make your thread titles as informative as possible: "Justin Feagin" is bad. "Justin Feagin leaving the team?" is good.
I've noticed that you're one of the most helpful people on this board. Is it the intermittent Bolivian vacations that keep you from being a mod?
I would send Section 1 to Bolivia every single day until relieved of my duties.
I did some of the live blogs, but I essentially resigned myself to deleting all of the FIRE BORGES!!!!11!!one!! comments.
Plus, I'm way too big of a jackass to take on actual responsiblity.
I'd be too vengeful god fire and brimstone leaving bodies in my wake that would make Keyser Soze proud. They seem to go for a more rational and understanding style around here. Go figure.
To everyone, get off your high horses and quick pissing on everyone with a bad title. At least is wasnt Zak Irvin.......... is decommited or dead for that matter. Neg away.
if you're going to piss on people, a high horse is probably the best place to be. Or a tall horse, anyway, not the Western Michigan "high horse" mascot.
Jeebus, that is one seriously high horse.
As much as I love this board (and I do) and as much time as I spend on it everyday (a lot), I get so tired of seeing this. Every post on this thread is not regarding the content and why we should be excited about this kid, it's some asshole venting about how this post is not good enough for them. It's amazing how many narcissistic douchbags can congregate in one place. If you're not moving the conversation forward or at least making a witty comment, why take the time to post at all?
Also, Merry Christmas Bitches!
I can understand your frustration, but the fact remains: If your going to start a thread, use an informative title. Otherwise, people that wouldn't normally click on this thread have to do so to figure out what its about and then get pissed that they could have skipped it if they weren't interested. Its all about being considerate of others and not being lazy.
especially knowing that you are a part of this board in your own right and have dealt with this issue many times (I would imagine), my point is this:
How many assholes does it take to tell someone they made a mistake? Surely by the 3rd poster telling him his title was crap, the poor guy understood that next Christmas, he'll do things differently. He knows he forgot the TPS Report...!
The OP could have always changed the thread title. Problem solved.
He gets it. That's all I wanted to say. It takes one MOD to say hey, fix the title. Otherwise thanks for the opinion about michigan players on a michigan blog and thats all that's needed.
I get it, too. It's always the same:
- guy names thread poorly
- people yell at him
- someone always says 'what is your problem dudes it's just a title don't click it or whatever'
- big argument
Seems like not naming the thread with a dumbass title would prevent all of this.
That said, interesting post. How about some links to the videos the OP has been watching or something?
Because he still hasn't changed it yet.
There's also a question of whether "I'm some Internet dude and watching him on YouTube makes me think he's awesome" is thread worthy or not. I mean...why? What about him? Your basketball background? What makes him better than everyone since Webber? How about making it a point of discussion....or a breakdown?
The bad thread title distracted from all that. But if he had just changed his title after the first one it would have stopped. Even "Zak Irvin is special"....though really what the thread is saying "I think Zak Irvin is special"...it's just thin on the "why."
Indeed it did. I laughed out loud at that line.
All of this is why I drink around my family during the holidays.
I'm just sayin'.
(hope the kid gets his life in order, though)
In other news, that's excellent re: Irvin. The pipeline looks bright indeed.
Please fix title.
It's not okay to post a vague title and have people risk wasting a precious 30 seconds clicking on the thread and deciding whether or not it's relevant to their interests. But it is okay to shit up a perfectly good discussion about a recuit bitching about the title? It's not like OP was purposefully vague to get clicks. It's a pretty innocent mistake. Meanwhile, the thread is unreadable.
Agreed. A mod should be cleaning this up. I've read to this point and haven't read a single meaningful word about Irvin.
I see deleting comments as a Pandora's Box situation: we're all better off having everyone on the thread make decisions on the validity of a comment (and keeping the comment there to see) than having me or profit deleting a bunch of stuff posted within the rules. There's just not a good place to start or end with that.
Why do I immediately think the dude either died or got arrested when I see a name with no other explanation on a thread? Why do I never think "hey...this will probably be something nice about a player I know". Nope - always either dead or in jail in my mind.
Glad this was just a shitty thread title and nothing worse.
I didn't even consider the jail possibility. I just assumed he had died.
I was thinking maybe he decommited...then remembered he already signed.
As for Irvin's play, yes, he looks really impressive. I would also rate him as our top incoming recuit. I'm guessing GR3 stays for his sophomore year (projected in the 2nd round), but if he doesn't, Irvin will fill that gap very nicely.
is enjoying Christmas with his family.
I only clicked on this thread because I thought Irvin wasn't qualified or was injured or did something amazing. You trolled for my view I hope your thread reaches -50 in downvotes.
It was a thread title that was too vague, otherwise the content was fine. Just help the guy out by informing him that his thread titles need to be more specific and move on.
That is not how things work around here.
I'm not one who cares too much about thread titles, but as far as actual content goes, this is just snowflakes. Not really informative or worthy of a thread. If he had posted all of Irvin's senior highlights, then maybe.
It's still Festivus right? Uninformative thread titles aaaargh.
its the holidays.quit bitching about titles and have a good christmas. Good lord some of you on here have to bitch about something.
Quit bitching about people bitching about titles. /bitching.
Sorry Champeen, we got Title Nazi's in here. Though, next time at least put "Zak Irvin is special"...that would probably be a tad bit better. What I don't get it is why can't one person just correct him, why do we have to have 20 other followers correct him, as if the first person wasn't enough already for Champeen to understand what he did wrong. Regardless, you seem new to posting on here, since you only have 121 points, therefore I wouldn't get on you!
I have been keeping track of the recruits, Donnal, Irvin, and Walton. Walton seems to be blowing up, but Irvin is keeping up with him. I think he will fill Tim Hardaway's role really nicely, if timmy were to leave this year. I honestly feel Irvin is playing better than Gary Harris did, when Harris was a senior. Gary Harris is averaging about 12 points a game at MSU. If Irvin could do that next year, I would be happy. I'm excited for the future of our basketball team!
Where are these Senior highlights.
UM Hoops would be a good place to start.
Both Walton and Irvin should be top 25 prospects by the time they arrive at Michigan. Whether they actually get rated that way or not remains to be seen. As Brian points out, everyone could see that Stauskas was better than his rankings indicated, while the hobbit from NC State was a McDonalds All American.
Walton badly outplayed Kasey Hill (top 10 player and #1 or #2 PG to most sites) over the summer. He has only improved every time I have seen him. His skill set fits perfectly with the roster that we will have next year as he is a distributor first and he will have so many weapons at his disposal.
I remember back to Irvin's recruitment there was some discussion if we should take Irvin, VJ Beachem or some others. As it seems is always the case (was with Walton as well), the guy who Beilein selects ends up skyrocketing.
I love Donnal's potential but I see him redshirting next year with Morgan, McGary, Robinson III, Horford and Beilfeldt all fighting for minutes at the 4/5.
Next year will be an even bigger fight for minutes, especially if THJ returns. How do you divide up 80 minutes between THJ, Stauskas, Levert and Irvin?
You really think Hardaway will stay? I think it would be a luxury to have THJr, Irvin and LeVert splitting minutes at the 3 (Stauskas is a 2, IMO), but I see THJr bolting to the NBA after the season he is poised to have.
Re: Donnal, taking a look at the depth at the 4 (I think Horford exclusively plays the 5 next season, if he can stay healthy, btw) I think a redshirt is likely. It's amazing how we have gone from last year (Smotrycz, then an out of position Morgan or out of position Novak) to the depth we have this year, to where we have the luxury of redshirting a 4 next year. Amazing.
One last thing: really enjoyed the post by Champeen, but it's pathetic that 90% of the responses to this post were about its title. This is why those of us who seek intelligent conversation about Michigan sports M-Go-Elsewhere.
No, I think Hardaway is gone after this year. He would probably be better served staying all 4 years but I think he will leave with Burke.
Stauskas may eventually be a 2, but this year he is the 3 and THJ the 2. If THJ returns I think you see...
2 - THJ/LeVert
3 - Stauskas/Irvin
If THJ leaves I think you will see Stauskas taking roughly 33 minutes with LeVert/Irvin dividing the other 47 between the two of them.
Also a link to highlights of Irvins last game. Someone with more technical knowledge than myself can embed.
Honestly, I wasn't super-duper impressed. However, I do have a heavy hate for highlight videos, because that's exactly what they are: highlight videos.
Looked lik he was going against very small competition that was okay with him getting to the line with little opposition. Hell, there was even a terrible shot in that highlight video.
I'd love to watch a full game of his.
Everything that I have read about this kid is that he is a pure shooter. From that video, he seemed to fell extremely confident driving the ball as well. From all accounts he is an elite level shooter, which is always a huge plus on a Beilien team, and it is a plus to see him developing his game and becoming an all around scorer. I love what Beilien is doing and I expect him and Walton to be key contributors on our team next year.
Just saying... lol
I would never dare post something off-topic in one of Brian's threads, hence, this post did not go in the "Merry Christmas" front page section. That said, it was a nice, early Christmas gift to see one of the Philly sportwriters paying a compliment to Brandon Graham.
I am no where close to having the points to start an original thread, and besides, the jury is out on whether each time someone writes something positive about a Michigan alum it's thread-worthy. I just figured with all of the frustration with OP's inability to properly title this thread, postive news would help put a smile on at least one MGoBlogger's face.
In this post, I wish there were more comments on Irvin, or Walton, or Irvin's film. All this stuff about an uninformative title is overkill and just piling on. I personally like
But for crying out loud, when someone has a terrible title, a poorly written post, with numerous misspellings and grammatical errors, no paragraph breaks, full of f-bombs, about the Tigers, with ginormous bare boobs and repeated Internet memes that make me roll my eyes, well, I move on to the next post or website. People need to get a life, lighten up, and move on.
I personally like when people don't write a short story every time they comment.
That's funny. Touche.
I share your concern with certain posters' obsessions with relatively trivial concerns, such as a thread’s title. Many times they engage in “groupthink”, mindlessly repeating a criticism when initial posts start to “neg” a thread.
Certainly, the capacity to “neg” a thread can help us screen out intentionally destructive comments from rivals. It can prevent this board from becoming a cesspool like many others. However, mindless conformity with prevailing opinion and“piling on” to others’ trivial criticisms—often in a very nasty way--can make us become what we seek to prevent.
until "no skanky pics."
That last paragraph is an....interesting....take.
So here's how I have it both ways:
For the most part, I think the site has come to an agreement with that view (with minor exceptions). Kidding aside, that post probably helped solidify the consensus feelings on it.
Point 2 isn't exactly the same thing, because it's not an individual post, but a thread. If someone created a look at these boobs thread you, and many others, would post objections to it. If this post wasn't an original but part of some other basketball/recruiting/snowflake thread I doubt anyone would have reacted.
Point 2b I don't know why everyone thinks I'm a mod. No offense taken, but there isn't a point threshold where you get mod powers. Magnus and some other big point earners aren't mods. I wouldn't joke around as much if I were a mod because it would reflect badly on the site. On my own all the blame goes to me; Brian has better mod choosing ability than that.
If the MGoMob is done with their MGoStandard MGoBitching maybe we can discuss sports? I agree with the premise of the OP. He shows impressive lateral quickness and a surprising handle. His passing ability and defense are far more than I expected. Are there any accurate reports of his work ethic, because from what I have seen he has a very high ceiling?
It's hard for me to imagine him showing that much polish on his mid-range game without him having a pretty impressive ethic. He seems like the kind of kid who's already spent a zillion hours in the gym, and I'm sure he and Beilein are going to love working together.
The thing I like so much about his video is how well it looks like his game is going to translate to a high-level college setting. Given the elevation he gets on his jumper, the smoothness of his handle, the quickness with which he can elevate off the dribble, and his length, I don't see him having any problem at all getting his shot against quality competition. It also looks like he has the tools to be a really elite perimeter defender, and to make the 1-3-1 into a turnover machine.
I saw it and figured it was some guy talking about Zak Irvin. Unfortunately I clicked on it because I like to see what mgobloggers think about Michigan recruits and instead got 25 rants about how poor a thread title it is and 20 (now 21) About how stupid it is to complain. What I really don't understand is the ppl that say they wasted time reading the post because they thought it was going to be about Irvin de-committing/dying(???)/deciding to become a Buddhist monk. Meanwhile the post was actually exactly what the title should have indicated to anyone who wasn't willfully ignorant: general thoughts on Irvin's potential as a collegiate basketball player. It's really not that complicated, guys.
