Chad Ford's Latest Draft Projections re: Trey & Tim

http://insider.espn.go.com/nba/draft/results/top100?year=2012&set=3

The numbers > 20 on his draft board are "insider only" so I won't post any content other than their rankings and projections (which also came across my twitter feed and are, in my opinion, public info now). Tim Hardaway Jr. is on Ford's Board as #66. Trey doesn't appear until #71.

I know many people on here don't like the NBA (and take every NBA related thread to remind the rest of us of that fact) but there are 30 NBA teams and 2 rounds of the draft. So according to Ford, if they left neither Trey or Timmy would be drafted. Ford "officially" has Tim as "2nd round pick /undrafted" and Trey as "2nd round pick /undrafted" in his projections, so we've got that going for us, which is nice

"Over? Did you say, over? Nothing is over until we decide it is!"

well Tim hasn't said he is testing the waters to see where he would be drafted.  So I am ASSuming he is coming back

THJ's dad is a one-man "NBA draft committee."  Also, his family doesn't need the money like those of so many basketball players.

I am guessing that THS knows exactly where THJ would be drafted and what he needs to work on.  Whenver you see shots of him watching games, it looks like his eyes are loading everything he sees into a computer.  The way the year ended sorta sucked, but at least it should be enough to make THJ not even think of the draft for this year.

What I would love to see as a "best-case scenario" is both of them coming back, playing so well that the first round is a foregone conclusion, taking Michigan to at least the Final Four, and then leaving with the heartfelt gratitude of the "Michigan family."

I'm guessing they're doing ok again, but this was the situation when Tim Jr. first came to Michigan.

That's probably why numbers 66 and 71 get "2nd round pick/undrafted" vs just "undrafted" projections. And (obviously since Trey and Timmy are in it) this list doesn't have only players who have already declared for the draft.

But it ultimately doesn't really matter, since being a 2nd-round pick is pretty lousy anyway.  Unless you have the good fortune to be drafted by the very team you were hoping for (as Morris was last year), you're often better off being an undrafted free agent.  You don't make any more money in the second round than you do as a free agent.

For a guy like Burke, the first round should be the only goal, and #71 is a long way from that.

On his top 100 page people had been updated as recently as 3/23, just Trey and Tim hadn't since November.

In an article posted this morning (http://insider.espn.go.com/nba/blog/_/name/nba_draft/id/7737632/nba-draft-michael-kidd-gilchrist-other-prospects-stay-hot) Ford went over "hot or not" players and neither of our boys was mentioned at all. It could be that Trey and Tim are off his radar for the moment, or entirely.

One of Michigan's friends in this process may be Satch Sullinger.  He's been around the game for a long time, doesn't seem wowed by the NBA, and presumably will at least have a conversation with Burke about what he should do.  Below is a quote from Sullinger in a longer piece about Burke over at UMHoops.

“You don’t look at what’s outside,” Satch Sullinger said Saturday, before Jared was to play in the Elite Eight for Ohio State. “We didn’t look at what was outside, we looked at what was inside of our son. At 19 years old being out there with money, we felt like we weren’t ready. His game may (have been) ready. We encouraged him, (but) it still was his choice. We encouraged him (that) he needed to stay. Hopefully, Trey makes the best decision for him.”

If history is any judge then the NBA scout's evaluation won't matter and "experts" (like Chad Ford) won't matter and certainly we won't matter (nor should we).

What WILL matter will be what their respective friends and agents tell them.  And for some odd reason the people with the most to gain financially from the player going pro early all seem to recommend an early departure and a for SURE top 20 draft slot.  Which is sad really because when you get mgrowold like me you learn that when somebody is more interested in their own welfare than yours you need to run like hell from their advice.

Hate to be the cynic but i've just seen this movie TOO many times to not know how it ends.  And sadly it will probably end badly for everyone concerned.....everyone that is except the friends who will now get to spend the players money and the agent who will collect 7% of whatever the pro contract goes for.

I think Trey has a solid suppor group around him (sounds like his dad and Big Sully both support him staying in school) and the pundits aren't going bonkers over Trey's game (yet). Hopefully Trey sees that and makes the correct call.

How would an agent benefit if Trey goes undrafted?

He doesn't lose much if anything if it happens. Certainly not nearly as much as the player could lose.

the crowds on the shore will always yell "Let's Go Blue."

Because there's a world of difference between undrafted and not playing.  Once a player makes the leap there is NO turning back and Tre, if undrafted, would be forced to play somewhere...anywhere...to earn a living and try to get back into the NBA.  Which means he'd need an agent and that agent would then collect 7%of his contract.

The only way the agent doesnt get paid is if A - the player sucks so royally they cant play in any league for any price (highly unlikely in Trey's case) or B - they stay in school.

Given what you know about agents and Tre's overall game do you see Trey being unable to play anywhere in the world?  I dont and that's why i think he's gonna get a lot of agent-love telling him just how wonderful and special he really is.

Just like Darius, Manny and Trent did before him.

combined with the lure of a bunch of quick cash, that's why I think he's leaving.

Just a note on the analysis on both of them: they haven't been updated since November 25. The analysis for a vast majority of the players ranked 1-50 have been updated in the last month or two. I don't know if that means anything, but is it possible that if Ford updates the analysis on them that they could jump higher?

But it's also possible after they are updated that they drop lower. Just my opinion, but if someone was impressing to the point of jumping up his list, I'd think that ford would get to that person sooner rather than later. Again, my opinion, but them NOT moving/being updated I'd see as a good thing for them staying
