Chad Ford final Mock Draft

i hope it's wrong. he has Trey going to OKC (a terrible situation for him) with the 12th pick.
he also has THJ to LAC with the 25 pick (which in my opinion would be a good situation).
if Trey really got stuck behind Russell Westbrook and fell to 12 that would be awful. here's hoping Chad Ford is wrong again.
He has dropped Burke from 2 to 12 based off of combine-like measurables.
Behind baseball, basketball is probably a sport where that crap matters the least.
It's 5 on 5...either you can play or you can. Trey Burke can ball.
Do I think he's a franchise changing player? No. But I think he's a steady PG that'll have 1-2 All-Star calibur years and you won't have to worry about that position until he's older and loses a step.
Burke won't fall past the Pistons at #8. That would be a steal.
The thing about Mock Drafts is, he's not actually saying how good he thinks Burke is, he's saying how good he thinks the various NBA GM's think he is. It's not so much about knowing the talent as figuring out who needs what and then getting a read on the opinion of the talent available.
A mock draft isn't a fantasy draft.
...it's a prediction.
That's why he also does his "Big Board" that ranks players.
What I'm saying, and maybe I wasn't clear, is that I don't think he gets past the Pistons at 8. There will be at least 4 teams that "could" use a PG in the top 8. They may go in a different direction, but I think by the time he gets to 7-8, the value will be so high any GM would have to take Burke. I think teams will take him at that range because he'll be one of the best PLAYERS and one of the best PGs.
Just my opinion just like this is Ford's opinion. We'll see tonight.
And I agree with that, we watched him all year, I would be very surprised to see him fall out of the top 10 as well. To me, the bigger travesty is that Michael Carter-Williams would be picked in front of Burke just because he's taller. The guy shot under 30% from three, and had an assist to turnover ratio nearly a full point lower than Burke because he can't hold onto the ball. Any GM that picks him just doesn't value his job.
I think that Trey would be deadly in the pick and roll playing with Drummond and Monroe. The problem is that drafting Trey means the backcourt will be small with him and Brandon Knight. However, I think Knight would make a good 6th man.
but they'd have to trade Brandon Knight.
the pistons play him at SG
is going to up my interest in watching the NBA by 50%
but i get the burke angle. look at the last few drafts and see if its easier to select and elite point guard or an elite SF. youll see that there are several quality PGs in the league, and that several others have a chance to earn that distinction as well. PG is stacked in the league right now, and a very good wing to me would be of more value. the pistons could always use their enormous cap space to grab a quality PG in an attempt to go to the playoffs this year, so i understand why they would be interested in a lineup that includes:
PG: free agent X/ Knight? (he really would be playing out of position, but is known to have some PG skills)
SG: Knight/ potential free agent Y
SF: Bennett
PF: Monroe
C: Drummond
with some good role players via free agency off the bench, that could potentially be a playoff team. The Burke scenario:
PG: Burke (probably)/ potential free agent
SG: Knight
SF: Singler (unlikely)/ Free agent X (more likely)
PF: Monroe
C: Drummond
sometimes it hurts to be a homer, but i like that first lineup better
I've seen a lot of Bennett this year and I'm not convinced he can play the 3, especially defensively. I dont think he's quick enough to guard some of the very athletic 3's... he's more of a 3/4 hybrid to me who plays a little bit like a 3 offensively because he has the ability to shoot from outside but defensively he's more of a 4 just cause he's so thick/stocky and has the frame of a PF... I kind of see him as a more athletic (WAYYY more athletic) version of Draymond Green. I think Burke fits best with the pistons because one of his major strenghts is the ability to read the pick and roll which is going to be an essential part of the Pistons gameplan/future with the two studs down low. You add two shooters to the Burke, Monroe, Drummond lineup and this would be a VERY competitive team in the near future. I vote Burke over Bennett any day...
but which is easier to find these days, a good PG or a good SF? that was my point. teams always seem to find a servicable PG who has a chance at being one of the best 10 in that postition league-wide. the SF position is a little more murky. Im not confident about almost all of the players in the draft, so i think that this is just a bad year to have a lottery pick. to me, Burkes best fit is in New Orleans. Burke excelled at michigan with hardaway, stauskas, robinson and mcgary. lets compare that to the current NO lineup:
PG: Greavis (?) Vasquez/ Burke
SG: Eric Gordon (much like THJ, if hot can be extremely dangerous)
SF: Al Faroq-Aminu (like GRIII, uber athletic but seldom used)
PF: Anthony Davis (like Mcgary, great rebounder, also a great defender and would be perfect for Trey's bread and butter: the pick and roll)
C: Robin Lopez (not much like any of them)
the best imitation of stauskas is ryan anderson, but hes half a foot taller. burke would have a very similar team, and i think that would lead to sucess.
IMO, the Pistons should snag Burke if he's available. Sign somebody like Dorell Wright or Martell Webster to play the 3. Then bring in a defensive specialist like Dahntay Jones or if they want to break the bank, Iggy to play the 2. Move BK to the bench, and call it good.
I'm not willing to mortage the future on BK by passing up on someone like Burke just because those two don't fit well together. The bottom line is that the future of the Pistons is the frontcourt tandem of Drummond and Monroe. Above all else the Pistons need a point guard who can run the pick and roll with Drummond and get Greg the ball in his spots.
The other two players on the floor don't need to be anything more than "3 and D" types.
If BK can give them some offensive punch off the bench then that's great. If not, they can probably trade him for something decent.
I thought the same thing. OKC wouldn't be a bad place for him at all. Burke at PG would mean Westbrook could focus on doing what he does best (scoring) and Burke could be the distributor.
FWIW all the talk around here in Cleveland says Len, not Noel, will be the first pick in the draft. The Cavs have zero reason to throw up a smoke screen cause they can take whoever they want and word is they are not hight on Noel at all.
One of the problems facing Trey is that he could basically average 17 and 7 and still not be one of the top 12 point guards in the league. The position is so deep and talented that you're going to get picked apart and scrutinized far more than other positions. Like center, where if you're 7ft tall and can basically walk and chew gum at the same time, teams are willing to forgive your complete inability to actually play basketball.
I don't know what mock draft you're looking at but it's not Chad Ford's NBA Mock Draft 7.0.
Ford has Burke going 12th to the Thunder and Adams going 10th to the Blazers.
Burke to OKC.. I'll take it... coming from someone who essentially lives in OKC.
However, Reggie Jackson is a very solid back-up PG who could probably start for some teams. I'm not so sure the Thunder would be a good home for him only because I'm not sure he'd be guaranteed even the #2 PG job.
Also, on that note, OKC needs a Big. PG should be set if Russell stays healthy, so I just have a hard time seeing them going PG with their pick. I have a harder time seeing him even available at #12, so maybe they just go for the best available if he's still there.
I also wouldn't be surprised if OKC trades up to fill a bigger need since they have another late first round and second round pick.
I just don't see Burke in OKC, even if I like the idea.
I've heard a ton of different rumors about where he'll end up, and while I don't have a horse in this race (don't care much about the NBA), I hope he ends up with the Pistons. In a way, it'll be like Trey never left.
is if the Pistons took Trey with the 8th overall pick and then took THJ with the 37th overall pick, both would be steals, both have chemistry with each other, and could you say lob city? Because I sure can.
