Celebrations on field at Uconn game have me slightly concerned

Submitted by Happyshooter on
I am not major league worried yet, but looking back I am slightly concerned. In between the joy at seeing the offense click and the defense do pretty good, I noted something that stuck with me this morning. Our players seemed to push the rules line quite hard after their trips to the end zone. I don’t expect a Carr style “You have been here before and will be again, stone face up” because RichRod seems more outgoing. However, they seem to really be pushing the excess celebration rules. I am not sure how to fire up the players while cutting down on the showboating—of course that is only one reason out of a two hundred I am not a football coach. I do think it has to happen, though. Other opinions? Am I overreacting?

ND this weekend?  Their new QB runs one in to make the score 20 - 11 and does one of those diving flips "after" he crosses the goal line.  15 yard penalty and ND returns the ensuing kickoff to the Purdue 40.  "That Guy" was showboating and they were losing....Our team was just enjoying the moment together.....

I think I hate Purdue more then MSU now.  I want us to put at least 50 on them this year.  Coach Hope is the anit-Christ.......

Stop the whining.  Who are we the Free Press?  Stop nit picking at every single negative thing that went on yesterday.

Let the kids play.  Let the kids celebrate.  I love seeing the emotion after big plays and TD's.

"That was a bit excessive." This the exact quote my wife uttered after I slid across the kitchen floor during the Robinson touchdown run. My hamstring is still a little tender. It could've been avoided but I'm not allowed to wear shoes in the house!

...reacting to with Shaw was him pulling his bottom two chinstrap snaps off as he began his little strut.  I'm sure they were reminding him in no uncertain terms that if he took his helmet off, he would be penalized.

If any of our players gets flagged this year for excessive celebration, it'll be Shaw.  He does push the envelope and unfortunately the officials will be watching him very closely.  With last year's tunnel escapade, I think he's gaining a reputation as a showboater.  At some point, a ref will decide that Shaw needs a lesson. Here's hoping it never gets to that point.

Vincent Smith on the other hand executed a nice football toss to the official at the back of the end zone after both of his TDs.  He absolutely had the attitude that he'd been there before.

Revisionist history is fun.  Charles Woodson, David Terrell, Braylon Edwards, Shawn Crable and Mike Hart never talked trash.  Never!

A couple guys wore their badges on their boxers, and so there were sometimes misunderstandings when they tried to show them to people to demonstrate their excellent character.

Vincent Smith is lucky he wasn't penalized for extending his arm higher than a 45-degree angle to the horizon.  Just more of the kind of thuggery you can expect from a Rich Rod recruit.

Here's an UNACCEPTABLE celebration for you: dex, myself, Ninja, and jamiemac hugging it out after every touchdown.  I'm slightly concerned now.

I dont recall that much hugging. makes me nervous that I drank too much and forgot things. And I'm sure I dont want to remember what i've forgot. I had some weird stiching markings around my kidneys when I got up this morning. I think I may have been skin suited

...enforcement of the excessive celebration penalty, the only player that came really close to "deserving" one was Todman who after he scored, did the old "shush" finger to the facemask gesture to the stands.  That's the kind of thing that will get flagged at some point even if it is silly.

This should not be a concern of yours when it was never penalized during the game.  Just concentrate on what we have to do to get better offensively, defensively, and on special teams.

College kids enjoying the moments and fun after months of intense work.  From what I read about a Rodriguez practice, the games are like a trip to the ice cream shop.  The reward.

Nothing stood out with me. I think we have a lot of classy guys who knows how it feels to be on the receiving end of defeat and aren't anxious to inflict a taunt on others.

I would assume that when the replay of #4 on the list of best moments in Big House history was being celebrated by the assembled UM multitudes, the OP sat with his arms folded and lips pursed in disapproval and concern. It's really quite disgraceful what Desmond did that day in the end zone.

Nevermind you're playing a hugely emotional, high energy game that you've prepared for and anticipated for months and months, around which several jets have flown over, massive marching bands play in great pomp and circumstance, lame men walk, and 113,090 people gather to cheer on their team. Nope. Players should just hand over the ball with a straight face, get in a single file line and neatly walk in step, arms at their sides back to their bench. During which, the crowd and cheering fans should not be acknowledged any time, for any reason.

Why don't we just create a list and regulate which kind of actions are acceptable? Then we can check instant replay to dispute things like whether the player lifted his hand in celebration above the level of his shoulder, which would be a 5 yard penalty. Jumping up and down more than 3 times would result in a 15 yarder on kickoff.

F that, and F you.

My solution: Players can celebrate any way they want for 3 seconds. Vulgarity, middle fingers, hip thrusting, whatever.

went down.  I didn't see that on the TV feed.  That is truly unacceptable...but whoever it was got theirs in the end.  I'm sure Edsall will address that in his own way...if he saw it.

You're concerned about the celebrations yesterday? One of the greatest moments in our history is Desmond celebrating by doing the Heisman pose in the endzone! Arrogance is part of our tradition, even if people don't like it. I'll take an excessive celebration penalty every time if it means we just put 6 on the board.

I didn't think our players were overly celebrating, but I definitely thought the referees made it a point to be right there to break up any activity and point players off the field.  It's almost like they were Security Guards at a rock concert trying to direct a Mosh pit.  I'm not worried about our players, but I'm worried that the referees are a little more concerned with it than they should've been.

Man, I know this is On Topic and everything, but where's Geaux_Blue when you need him.

Come on Happy Shooter. Cant you just enjoy the win, the holiday weekend and work on your Vinny Smith wiggle move, bounce off a safety, sprint into the end zone and point in celebration with the folks in Section 14.

We dont need to be officially concerned about anything. Not today

Come, GB. Vinny was practically pointing at you way up there, cant you take this down for sheer buzz killing attempts?

Then again, it is a holiday, Maybe the whole community hasnt had a chance to negbang yet, so maybe I see the worth in leaving it up after all.

These type of celebrations wouldn't even be looked at twice by officials in other conferences.  Maybe RR should make a pre-emptive plea to the conference head officials office to make the rules equal and fair in all conferences?  As a former player myself, I don't agree with taunting and I certainly don't think we should institute a "Big House Leap" (although that would rock - a la Roy Roundtree's spring game leap) but lets not take all the fun out of sports for the athletes.

I am not that familiar with what draws a penalty in the college game all I have to say on that front is that if we do get an excessive celebration penalty we better learn from it and never get a second one.

But from a personal standpoint I love seeing guys express spontaneous happiness at success, there's jumping and hugging and high-fives just among fans.  A premeditated ocho-cinco-style celebration bothers me, but I didn't see that yesterday and I generally don't in college.
