CCHA Playoff Scenarios

Submitted by redwings8831 on

With one series left in the regular season, M hockey can finish anywhere from 1st to 5th in the CCHA. Michigan would win the tiebreaker over Ferris State for the #1 seed with a sweep over Bowling Green and a Western Michigan sweep of Ferris. Below are the rest of the scenarios:

Earlier in the season we were also getting absolutely flattened by almost everyone we played and Ohio was running train through the CCHA on the way to a number one ranking. Things change quickly in college hockey. I think Western is the better team, but it is a home and home and those series seem to be split more often for whatever reason.

I'm not sure you guys have really been paying attention to western lately. In the last 5 weekends they

  • Got swept by Miami in Oxford
  • Split with Bowling Green (home & home)
  • Split with Alaska in Kzoo
  • Split with OSU in Kzoo (giving OSU their first win of 2012)
  • And split with LSSU in SSM

They basically came out at .500 with the bottom 4 teams in the league (OSU might as well be). I think it's more likely they get swept. This is the best team they've played in a while

I honestly don't see Michigan getting to the #1 seed.  Ferris hasn't lost since Christmas break, expecting them to not get a single point (not just swept) in a home in home vs a rival is tough to believe.

However, don't think this really matters as I see the same 4 teams making it to the semi finals either way. Michigan, Ferris, Western and MSU/Miami.

At this point, I just want to sweep this weekend, sweep the CCHA 2nd round at home, and make the CCHA Championship game.

Even if we were to lose that, I still think we'd be a one seed. Heck we could probably even drop one other game and still get a 1.

Getting the one seed is mission number one in my mind because the NCAA tourney is such a crap shoot. Giving yourself the easiest road is all you can really hope for. Then you need good goaltending and some luck to get you the rest of the way.

I want a championship so bad this season. For Red, Hunwick, and the rest of the boys.
