CC: Troy Calhoun

Submitted by Ziff72 on

A name that has not been mentioned at all but I saw it surfaced with the Nebraska job and seems like an interesting fit.

As we saw a few years ago his offense can give people fits as he chewed up Mattison.  What people may not know is that he has a pro background.  He coached with the Broncos and Texans before moving back to college.  He has since added more passing to the Air Force attack and made them more balanced.   It's just not the flexbone you see with Navy.    Seems like he could install a pretty interesting offense here at Michigan with more assets at his disposal.   He's still young (48).

Interesting option as I think he has shown the ability to adapt and be creative with his attack.  I'd be in full support.

You can't fucking have him!

Just kidding.  Sort of.

EDIT:  Yeah, I thought of Troy as a good candidate before.  Has discipline, NFL experience, shows an ability to do great things with players that don't get attention from big programs.  I think he'd be a good coach at Michigan, but my AFA heart would be sad.

A million times yes!

Was thinking about him after reading I think the same story you were linking his name possibly to Nebraska.

The same age or younger than most other candidates.

Pro background.

Diverse offensive knowledge (pro style obviously in the NFL, running option attack at Air Force.

Clean.

And with UM's returning personnel, I think that option attack makes the most sense, again, from a pure personnel persepctive.  An inexperienced yet mobile enough QB running the option with Green, Isaac, and Smith/Johnson depending on health and package on the field, with the biggest question mark on the offense (besides QB) WR diminished b/c of focus on the run game?

The downsides...

Would he leave his alma mater to come to Michigan?

He handled running things at Air Force.  Can he handle running things at UM?

First off:  Nooooooooo! He's USAFA's guy no-one else can have him!

More seriously, he's been fairly up and down and has been pretty abrasive with the C-Springs media, interest in the program has taken a bit of a nose dive even as he restructured the program after Fisher "retired".  He's got pro experience and his preferred offense isn't the wishbone, but rather a more passing attack.  But, I think his overall program management isn't really there yet, he's getting some slack at USAFA because he's an alum, but I don;t really see him as being the guy right now.

A 2-10 season at a service academy is at least a little easier to explain.

And the size discussion happens often when looking at these option offenses, as a lot of schools (service academies especially) run them to help compensate for lack of size up front, and it leads to a misnomer that you'd want/need smaller OLinemen to run that type of offense.

Georgia Tech's OLinemen are comparable in size to Michigan's, and they run a very conservative version of the "old school" triple option.

Could UM's OLinemen convert to this?  Not sure.  I'm also not sure Calhoun would be as exclusive with that offense at Michigan, as he does have a pro background.  I'm wondering if that offense would be relegated to certain packages.

Agree with the option C label.  And I'd rather have coordinators (Tom Herman specifically) than Calhoun.  Nothing against Calhoun.  He's done great things at the USAFA.  I just like the offense Herman runs, plus his recruiting experience in our own back yard is an advantage.
