He will have to get a house, collect a staff, figure out who to go after, and yes - he will have to work much harder to recruit than someone who has spent an entire year working on their class.

Sounds like he's trying not to burn the Ohio State bridge on the way out.

It does make some sense really - he was the OC at Rice for a couple years, so he definitely is familiar with the area adn the sort of talent you can potentially get. ESPN said Houston rather wants to return to time not to long ago - the Briles and Sumlin times - when their offense put up mammoth numbers. Herman could probably give them that.

While I would be ecstatic if we did grab him, I suspect that's not the case and he will end up elsewhere (Houston, for example).

He should've probably been #2 on Hackett's list after Harbaugh.

Edit:

Not sure why this was downvoted at all.

I said something similar on an earlier thread. This feels and plays like an Urban Meyer offense and nothing like Herman's offenses at Iowa State. I don't know how people are confidently giving him credit.

My friend that lives in Houston was saying yesterday that the local sports radio seems to think that Herman is their guy. Not exactly confirmation.

...for reasons outlined by Brian. He convinced me. Not sure why others think he would be a bad hire. Seems like Meyer is a terrific judge of coaching talent, and his former coaches have excellent track record as HC. Would also create a nostalgic buzz re Bo and Woody.

Probably. He presents a bigger risk than any of the reported top choices. He'd be harder to sell to an unhappy fan base. "We struck out on Harbaugh but here's an assistant from OSU" isn't going to boost ticket sales. The potential upside is there, but we're not in position to hire based on that.

We didn't hire Bo off of Woody's staff. He'd been a head coach for six years. Notice where these top assistants are going. SMU and likely Houston.

He's going to Houston and its a great hire for them.

Also, I don't care what anybody says, he would not have been a good hire by Michigan. Its a big name coach or nothing, IMO.

Word is he's coming down here. Great hire for UH. Briles and Sumlin were able to use UH as a stepping stone to greater things recently and the Houston area has a ton of great football talent. If he can recruit I see him doing well here.
