CC: Schad on LSU and Miles
LSU AD: "Les Miles is LSU?s head coach and we are going to do everything we can to keep it that way."
LSU has not been contacted by Michigan.
January 8th, 2011 at 4:43 PM ^
Also reported by Chengelis. Sounds a lot like last search and we aren't actually looking at Miles with the AD trying to make sure we don't start.
January 8th, 2011 at 4:59 PM ^
The guy at least deserves a conversation. He deserves as much of a look as Hoke and Fitzgerald, even if he doesn't get the job.
January 8th, 2011 at 5:00 PM ^
I never said it was a bad thing if we stayed clear of Miles. I'd take him over Hoke but after about a dozen other people...
January 8th, 2011 at 4:44 PM ^
DB would get owned by LSU's AD.
January 8th, 2011 at 4:54 PM ^
when it comes to making football program related decisions for the U of M DB would get owned by my two year old daughter. Just sayin'
January 8th, 2011 at 4:45 PM ^
The comments - semi-emphatic - by Hoke's agent, and the comments by Schad, if correct, lead me down one road. The trees are lush, the grass green, the pavement sparkling, and naked women hide behind rocks and whisper the secrets of life. Let's go, Hoke.
January 8th, 2011 at 4:44 PM ^
Can we have a coach now? Please? Even knowing that BH would be our coach is better than being left out to dry like this
January 8th, 2011 at 4:45 PM ^
YES WE ARE GETTING THE MAD HATTER!!!!!!! WOPOOOOOo!!!!
January 8th, 2011 at 4:45 PM ^
I'm tired of the this d-bag.
January 8th, 2011 at 4:46 PM ^
Who are we looking at? Anyone?!!! F this. Just bring in Hoke the Joke already. Ugh
January 8th, 2011 at 4:51 PM ^
But only if the "Obama to Michigan" speculation falls through first.
You heard it here first!
January 8th, 2011 at 4:46 PM ^
Modelo Beer no. 11 .... Man our FB program is the laughing stock of the week.... Well tomorrow is Sunday,...a new week, won't get my hopes up...
January 8th, 2011 at 4:47 PM ^
is introduced at halftime of the Michigan/Kansas b-ball game tomorrow? 15% my bet.
January 8th, 2011 at 5:02 PM ^
Tomorrow? Close to zero. The OSU game next week is another story.
January 8th, 2011 at 5:48 PM ^
les at half time. i got a sam gut feeling
January 8th, 2011 at 7:08 PM ^
Zero. It's been less than a week. UM is a public institution and the job must be kept open for at least a week.
January 8th, 2011 at 4:49 PM ^
All that noise from last night from wjob.com radio on Miles.....we might have a 5-8 recruit class come NSD.
January 8th, 2011 at 4:51 PM ^
"If you're qualified, we're not talking to you." - Dave Brandon
January 8th, 2011 at 4:54 PM ^
This has become very uncomfortable! What is going on? NO ONE seems to want this job!
January 8th, 2011 at 5:00 PM ^
How can you say that when we have no idea if anyone (other than presumably Harbaugh) has been offered the job?
January 8th, 2011 at 4:55 PM ^
I sincerely think that David Brandon is looking to hire someone from outside of the Michigan "family." If he wanted to hire Miles or Hoke, he wouldn't have needed to hire a search firm.
January 8th, 2011 at 4:59 PM ^
I think hiring a search firm just "ensures" he hires the best qualified candidate.
Edit: or at least gives the impression that he didn't just make this decision by himself and the people whispering in his ear.
January 8th, 2011 at 5:06 PM ^
Right, the search firm is to make up for not using a search committee, like Martin did last time. To me just still just feels ad hoc--like the plan was Jesus H. H*******, and the back-up plan was, uh---aw, hamburgers!
January 8th, 2011 at 5:07 PM ^
Exactly, at least thats how I look at it as well.
January 8th, 2011 at 5:07 PM ^
I think you're right on Magnus.
January 8th, 2011 at 5:22 PM ^
see above, re: third party. At first I thought a search firm was a crazy idea. But that perspective makes it a smart idea. I'm all for any advantage we can find and if a search firm keeps it cleaner in terms of rules of contact, etc., then excellent.
January 8th, 2011 at 4:56 PM ^
Why would they have been contacted? Wouldn't we just be talking to his agent? I see no reason why UM would have contacted LSU. Am I missing something?
January 8th, 2011 at 4:58 PM ^
exactly. we have no reason to contact Pastilong. Lesly's buyout is his responsibility.
January 8th, 2011 at 5:00 PM ^
the whole person of the search firm. UM doesn't need to ask permission to speak with Miles because they are not the ones engaging him. A search firm is a third party that is used to gauge the interest of coaches so that the school doesn't have to get involved and make it more difficult.
January 8th, 2011 at 5:03 PM ^
Usually ADs contact their counterparts to request permission to speak to a coach who is under contract. Not obligated, but customary.
January 8th, 2011 at 5:07 PM ^
LSU's AD was a smug motherf******* last time this went down. I would not extend him any courtesy.
January 8th, 2011 at 4:56 PM ^
Is coach Klein from The Waterboy available? Seriously, anything is better than nothing. Pretty soon he will be the only option left. I know DB, let's wait it out and just see what happens next. Who knows, maybe we can genetically recreate Vince Lombardi by signing day.
January 8th, 2011 at 4:58 PM ^
I don't want him if we can't get Farmer Fran...
January 8th, 2011 at 5:09 PM ^
January 8th, 2011 at 5:08 PM ^
Not sure, but one of our MGOposters is Bobby Boucher. Maybe he'd know?
January 8th, 2011 at 4:56 PM ^
I think DB underestimated this process. He thought he could control the table but really, it's the clock that controls the table. Timing is everything and his has been really off. Just when I thought I couldn't get any more depressed about this. Plus, I'm at work right now and that just sucks.
January 8th, 2011 at 6:31 PM ^
Maybe we're underestimating DB? I feel more confident in DB this time around than in BM 3 years ago...
January 8th, 2011 at 4:57 PM ^
Even if you don't want the guy, he wins games and has deep ties to UM. He should a least be talked to. Same applied to Patterson. Not even convinced we talked to Harbaugh. We've talked to two people, from the sound of it - Hoke and Fitzgerald. I'm not saying either is a guaranteed failure, but why the hell would either be the first names on the list?
January 8th, 2011 at 5:15 PM ^
The question is, why would anyone in our athletic department or LSU's tell YOU who we are talking to and about what? In these situations there are about a million details that the general public doesn't need to know and having those details out there just makes it harder to do business.
January 8th, 2011 at 5:04 PM ^
i love everyone on here bagging on DB. LULZ Do you people seriously believe you know how to run a coaching search? This isn't NCAA 2011. You people need to calm the fuck down.
edit: tO$U didn't hire sweatervest until Jan 17th. Let the process go on.
January 8th, 2011 at 5:07 PM ^
I don't pretend to know how to conduct a coaching search. Then again, I don't think we need to be conducting one in the first place. I was fine with the coach we had. The only search I think we needed is the one that required us shelling out big bucks to a PROVEN DC who can recruit talent and actually coach defense.
The dominos are falling( no pun intended....really) and the program has gone from possibly turning the corner to being set back another 3-5 years while we hope our hire succeeds.
I'm starting to understand how Notre Dame feels.
January 8th, 2011 at 5:18 PM ^
seriously believe that Brandon knows how to run a coaching search?
All the experience as a corporate CEO? Reinventing Domino's pizza? He has certain skills, but they're hardly relevant to whether or not he has the ability to search for a new college football head coach.
I don't know that he's doing a terrible job. But it sure seems like he's not reaching out to qualified options, given the number of "no one has contacted me"s that we're hearing from potential candidates. Meanwhile two 4-star defensive recruits who favored Michigan just chose other schools.
That's all the evidence we have to go on. And what evidence there is suggests that he's NOT doing a great job. The burden is shifting to him to show that he IS doing a good job (the simplest way would be to bring in a top coach, do it fast, and have it not be Brady Hoke).
January 8th, 2011 at 5:19 PM ^
I'd be more troubled about Brandon and the process if people like me, you and the rest of us really knew what was going on. A coaching seach is not conducted in a public forum -- do we expect DB to create a blog and update it every 15 minutes about what's going on? I expect the potential candidates are treating it the same way - maybe they're being truthful, maybe they're spinning, maybe they're flat out lying about what's going on. As much as we'd like to know what's going on, we won't until it's a done deal.
January 8th, 2011 at 5:50 PM ^
and we saw how well the last coaching search went when the AD was not being careful about leaks...
January 8th, 2011 at 5:45 PM ^
1. Played under Bo.
2. Served as a successful regent to this university.
3. Mary Sue Coleman is one of the top University Presidents in the world. If DB is good for her, then he is good for me.
4. You obviously have no clue about how competitive the corporate world is. Major corporations operate just like an AD, who employ the use of head hunters when searching for new leaders, specifically CFO's, CEO, COO's.
All you are doing is crying just because your boy Jimmy Harbaugh wanted to join his brother in the NFL. Boo Hooo. I would rather DB spend his time taking a methodical approach than rush this decision. If you think DB has not been planning this for a long time, then you are very naive. AD's always have a tentative list for the next HC in case something happens (ie firing, or the HC getting killed in a car crash).
Stop being impatient. Ohio State named Jim Tressell head coach on Jan. 17.
January 8th, 2011 at 7:53 PM ^
My credibility here: over a decade on WS. I've seen a ton of CEOs take their fortunes and lives post-CEO life and run ventures in to the ground.
People may say: "Running a corporation has many parallels to running a AD: Organizing human capital, delegating, making tough decisions, etc.
BS!
There is a reason that the one of three guys who was in the running to replace Jack Welch took Home Depot and almost BK'd it - certain commercial capabilities are NOT transferrable. There is also a reason that KKR and Blackstone and Hicks Muse had a few bad decisions and lost their LPs a few bn here and there - just because you can make 5x buying a food company doesn't mean you can make the same return buying an old line industrial company.
Being smart in one area of the commercial world does NOT mean you can transfer to another era.
DB: You mismanaged the situation. You should've replaced Rich Rod midseason. OR, You should have had quiet conversations in October/November so you had things in place.
DB grades out a C- on handling this situation.
January 8th, 2011 at 5:16 PM ^
All the Rich Rod-haters had their time to be hysterically anti-RR for the past three years, so I don't see why the DB-haters shouldn't get their shot. At least RR had a track record to point to before he came to UM. Brandon has never worked in college athletics. He'll win respect when he does something that deserves it. Firing RR didn't. The timing of the firing didn't. Not having somebody lined up didn't. Piped in music didn't. Gah!
