CC: Sam Webb says Addazio and Schiano are rising up the board

Submitted by pfholland on

Sam Webb is stating that Greg Schiano is, "generating the majority of buzz," and the BC's Steve Addazio's name is, "being mentioned more and more in Ann Arbor."  Apparently Addazio's style of play and BC academics are the primary reasons.

As an aside, Sam has made the decision to be the sole voice on coaching search updates over at the Michigan Scout premium board, effectively censoring Tom Beaver.  Sam and Tom's information hasn't been agreeing (Tom has been far more optimistic on Harbaugh) but until now both viewpoints were presented.  No more.  I would typically never post premium content elsewhere (and never have before), but after this move along with Sam's locking of the thread where subscribers were crticizing his decision he can go fuck himself.

Regardless of whether these rumors are true, we need to be realistic about this search.  There are many institutional challenges associated with coaching at Michigan, and I doubt Harbaugh or any other top coach will come for those reasons.  As a fanbase, we need to stop the spiral of having enormous expectations and then being disappointed when we see an end result that isn't what we like.  Does that mean Hoke was the right hire?  No.  Does that mean we should settle for Schiano / Addazio?  No.  But it does mean that we should have REALISTIC EXPECTATIONS.  We're starting to act and sound like ND fans.

There's nothing wrong IMO with a guy like Cutcliffe.  He would come in and stabalize the program for a few years.  He can develop QBs, an area we have problems in, and he can recruit the south, where he's spent almost his entire career.  Having coached at Duke, he understands academic expectations.

There's nothing wrong IMO with a guy like Pinkel.  SEC East qualifiers aside, he's won the division 2 years in a row, with 2 / 3 star recruits.  There's nothing wrong with a Pat Fitzgerald who understands academic expectations and gets the most out of his players.

The more we talk about Harbaugh and these pie in the sky candidates (like Jim Mora Jr.), the more desperate (and ND like), we look.  It's unlikely that Harbaugh comes here when he has numerous NFL suitors.

Right now, any candidate that does an ounce of DD on our program sees the following;

1.  A divided AD and numerous factions amongst alumni.

2.  A university president that has openly and publicly questioned athletics, meaning the chances of meddling by him or one of his representatives in the program (recruits, for example) are high.

3.  A poor location in a state that produces few players, a neighboring state (Ohio), producing fewer and fewer players (and the ones they do produce end up committing to Meyer anyways), a region that produces fewer and fewer players, and no other established recruiting pipeline anywhere else in the country (including the "Big Three" states of FL, TX and CA).

4.  A rabid fanbase that expects immediate results and who will exert enormous pressure to win after two failed coaches.

5.  A roster that allegedly has good recuits, but a school that produces few NFL players (what matters is what NFL scouts think, not what rivals or scout or ESPN think)

The above is what any prospective coach is going to see.  They're not idiots.  They're not going to fall for the "tradition" line.

My greatest fear is that the AD focuses way too much on Harbaugh or other big names even when there's no chance of landing them, and then when they say no, immediately goes for the "rebound" who's a lackey who expresses love for the program and its "tradition."  In this process, we end up with Schiano / Addazio.  If we take off the rose colored glasses a bit, we can end up with a lot better (Cutcliffe, PInkel, FItzgerald).

My Hairstylist is more tuned in to who Michigan's next coach is gonna be. Sam has great info on recruiting from being boyz with Singletary and Jackson. But when it comes to who is gonna be hired as our next coach he has nobody he's close to that would have any idea. I am 100percent sure that Schiano and Addazio's names aren't on Hackett's list. And yes I have talked to Hackett recently. He is going after far bigger fish than those two.

Remember the fans’ excitement when Rich Rodriguez was announced as Lloyd Carr’s successor?

Remember the fans’ excitement after Brady Hoke’s introductory press conference?

Well, it turns out that Mark Schlissel and Jim Hackett turned to George Costanza to head up their search committee.

We excited the fanbase with the last two hires, so now let’s make the fanbase as angry as possible and see how that works.

Yeah! That's The Ticket!

Maybe it's because they're telling me what I want to hear, but I trust the Rivals guys a lot more on the coaching search. Webb is great for recruiting info but Borton and Balas have been realistic but optimistic on JH all month.  They are quick to dispel the (apparent) misinformation out there and have been posting almost daily updates.  Sure, they don't really know any more than their sources tell them.  I guess the proof will be in the hire.  Last go 'round, Balas was very optimistic on Harbaugh until he suddenly wasnt.  Who knows.

Is not stupid. He also doesn't appear to be a power hungry POS with a personal agenda like DB was. He knows that this hire is the most important since 1969 and he knows that anything less than a home run hire will be considered a failure. I think he's going to land JH. But if he decides not to come Hackett will overrule the rest of the AD and bring in Miles. And I'm confident that Les wouldn't turn us down.

I don't envy Hackett. Our fanbase basically made a list of only 3 coaches they wouldbe happy with him hiring. It's looks like those 3 are not available, so he cannot win at this point.
