CC: Rumors and Harbaugh open thread

Submitted by michgoblue on
[ed-S: Jeff Ross isn't even making the announcement today anymore. I won't fight the rumor threads but nothing seems to have changed from Brian's post yesterday. So I have changed the title here. Go ahead and have your thread; nothing I've got has changed my belief that the ball is still in Jim's court.]

I expect that if there is anything of significance that comes us, there will be new threads created. For now, for those of us up early scouring MgoBlog for anything of interest on the Harbaugh, Miles, cc front, let's use this as the general discussion thread.

By the way, thanks, Internet, for making me exhausted today! The Twitter / board frenzy around 11 last night cost me a good hour and a half of sleep. Harbaugh needs to announce that he is coming home pronto!

Moss referenced Brandstatter and Wojo chumming it up on twitter.  I looked at their exchange from last night.  I mean if you really read into maybe there is something there but I feel this really reaching by Moss.  In any case the longer this goes the better it is for us.

From developments this is what I am seeing: the news that Brandy now thinks Harbaugh is coming is incrementally good news but not earth shaking. What IS a "sea change" as WoJo said is the way the Harbaugh to Michigan speculation will be reported. Before it was the stuff of the Edge Of The Internet and other fever swamp locations. But because Brandy is a respected figure among the mainstream sports media, the more cautious establishment types will start to join the drumbeat of Harbaugh to Michigan. All this points to a likely deal. But Harbaugh being Harbaugh he wants to see out his committee to to the 49ers organization first. Now that the cat is getting out of the bag early it may get difficult for him to do that. Hopefully it doesn't spoil the whole dynamic and either sour Harbaugh generally or worst case kill the deal.

Who knows? But at this point if the mainstream sports media start picking this chatter up (there is an order of operations here, and the raw rumors have been digested and filtered enough so that they can reference more legit sources than a 4Chan the blog), then no matter what it's going to turn the heat up on Harbaugh's camp. Unless he was ready to announce a Michigan deal today, this surge in the Internet chatter will make it hard for him to operate normally in the 49ers offices for the next week or two. Rather than waiting for an end of season chat with His front office, it may force more frank conversations between all parties sooner. For good or ill, it may accelerate Harbaugh's "swim lane."

The 2007 Herbstreit thing was only a thing because of the timing with Miles.  He was trying to win an SEC (?) title that night so he was forced to make a strong public statement that he intended to be the LSU coach.  The LSU AD then basically used that and UM dragging its feet to force Miles to ink an extension keeping him out of the running for the UM job.  There is no remotely similar scenario that can play out with Harbaugh.  Rumors of him leaving have zero impact on his current team and his current management seem disinclined to keep him anyway.

From the actual post: "Well, my sources have informed me that Michigan radio voice Jim Brandstatter has been telling his media friends that he expects Harbaugh to take the U of M job and it is just a question of the timing of the San Francisco buyout now."

Uhh ... a 'source' is telling him that Brandstatter has been telling his media friends that Harbaugh is coming. He didn't hear from Brandstatter himself. I don't take anything this guy says seriously -- and neither should you, if you don't wanna get burned.

For Pete's sake: for folks who didn't read the full thread: 1) Moss said he'd reveal his source at 9am. Rumor has it he backed off of that but nothing published by Moss says he did. 2) Moss did publish info that his SOURCE HEARD that Brandy was telling all types of media folks that Harbaugh was a go. Technically Moss still hasn't revealed his source, and as others have noted the reliability is now lower because we are dealing with 2nd 3rd hand info again. Brandy didn't even talk to Moss. Brandy might mot even talked to Moss' source. Moss' source said HE heard that Bra DH was talking everybody. It's all still 2nd and 3rd hand stuff. The onky difference now is it seems mainstream sports media are now joining the drumbeat. So for good or ill it will put more heat in Harbaugh in the next week or so. It's fish or cut bait time.

His "story" references the "end of internet" thing about the text Harbaugh sent to Moeller.

This is, as you said, completely circular and completely without any kind of source at all. Half based on Wojo's very non-informative tweet and half based on something that was in a thread which was deleted off here the same day it was posted.

Moss never said he was revealing his source. He said he would reveal who is telling the Detroit media that JH was coming...which he did through a secondary source. Take that how you want. It makes sense since Wojo and Angelique haven't said anything all coaching search and now they seem to act on Twitter like they know something.

incestuous, non-sourced, hyperventilating, internet/social media circle jerk that I've seen in quite a while.

One thing is sure: Brandstatter will be announcing a complete denial and renunciation of everything Moss says before the end of the day today.

that's my point... so much of this supposed "information" consists multiple references to a single "source" that's dubious as hell to begin with, and then comments about that source which are then interpreted by others as original reporting which then circles back to the original bullshit. It's like a large bowl of very long spaghetti that's all mixed up and trying to find out where one noodle begins and another one ends.

Just to be clear, I am NOT anyone's source in M coach search, & I am NOT telling anyone Harbaugh is the guy. Rumors to contrary are false.

Of course, if Harbaugh does come here, Moss will beat his chest for weeks proclaiming how right he was all along.

This is crap.  Means nothing.  So, someone knows someone that heard Brandy say he expects Harbaugh to come?  This is news?  It's one man's opinion.  Can't believe the interwebs got its panties in a bunch over something this small.  Things over at Schembechler Hall are airtight... and this was just a small crumb hitting the floor.  Jesus.

In the meantime, the Clarion Ledger reports that Dan Mullen has told them he has not been contacted by Michigan about the coaching gig. So if this and the Les Miles stories are true, our Plan Bs are dropping like flies. It's either going to get very happy or very shitty for us in the next 10-14 days around here.

I think Jim Mora is the real plan B option and I think that would be a great move for Michigan. I think if we wind up with Mora we would all wind up very happy 5 years from now.

Although at this point it doesn't seem like a plan B option may be needed. Where there is this much smoke, there is usually fire (except in 2007 with Miles of course).

Even though this will be buried, this dude is now trying to tease that maybe he'll have more information.
