The super bowl is a worldwide event.  The NFL is a global brand.  Becoming well-known (for good things) in professional sports increases your "brand awareness" more globally than in college sports.  Joe Pa, Coach K, et al be damned.

<br>"Real feeling" around the league he wants to be in NFL. Has to be right situation in NFL. Up to an NFL team to make him an offer large enough to pull him away

screwed that up. His NFL sources say there's a feeling he may go to NFL. But then immediately said Michigan has been in it all along, and that he (Schefter) has said all along that it was likely M, and it would be up to an NFL team to make an offer to pull him away from M

Rosenberg just wrote a column on why Harbaugh is right for Michigan. Then he promptly tweeted that "the deal fell apart" rumors are not true and that Harbaugh will pick UM or SF. Looks like Rosie is trying to convince us that his column is not a moot point.

I wasn't around mgoblog for the last coaching search, but this is some crazy shit.  I literally feel like I have to refresh here every 10 minutes or I could miss something earth shattering.  Which is, of course, ridiculous, but I can't help myself.

Flight tracker? Did someone say flight tracker? I haven't refreshed in 5 minutes and I missed the first flight tracker? Oh... Not yet, but I'm sure it is coming. I remember those days we all became infatuated with all things FAA.

the big lead isn't the kind of place to have well connected sources at michigan.  if this is true, i think the traditional michigan sources will have the same story shortly.

We could have hired Harbaugh (or someone else) 3 years ago. This hire (RR) not only hasn't worked out, but has left us screaming at our misfortune because one guy (Harbaugh) may turn us down.

But, I'm thinking that we are still Michigan. Would an NFLer be interested? Meyer? Pelini? John Harbaugh? I really don't think we have to hire Brady Hoke.

But, we'll soon see.

...this coaching carousel is less crazy than last time...LOL.

All the rumors are meaningless.  If you were JH agent, wouldn't you put rumors about everything out there?  I would put out stuff that he was signing his extension at stanford; look at the niners, broncos, panthers; and Michigan.  And then, Harbaugh would have his choice of a cushy gig, right?

So, best case for all of us is to go into hibernation until later in the week, wake up, and see if Brandon has saved us or made us all reach for our nooses.

I don't see JH passing up HC job with the 49ers. Though, it is really tough for a college coach with no NFL experience to make it. All the best for him.  Hopefully, DB has a great 2nd choice on his list.

Uh, last I checked we are a mess too .... unfortunately .... which is why all the "big names" may stay away.

The good news is, Notre Dame went all spread, so if we do get a viable pro style coach in here, it may be easier to recruit the guys (particularly WRs, DBs, and DTs) who want to play in the league. (i.e., I believe the spread has been bad for recruiting at some positions ...)

I'm a bit suspicious of this, since no one leaked this informal agreement when it was supposedly reached. It seems like reaching an informal agreement would be much more likely to leak than the collapse of an informal agreement.

Doug Karsch just made a good point. He has two sources he trusts regarding M athletics one of whom he described as "well connected" and the other "extremely well connected". He spoke to both this morning, and neither of them have any idea what is happening with the potentioal CC because Brandon has been so tight-lipped. His point was, if thebiglead.com knows something, it didn't come from anyone inside the M athletic department, which makes it unlikely they know anything.

Don't you get it?  The Big Lead is reporting it's falling apart because of the efforts of NFL teams to sign JH.  Not because Michigan's offer wasn't good enough (quite possible), or Michigan pulled an offer (impossible).

That's the point here.  It doesn't matter that no one inside at Michigan knows anything.  It's what the NFL teams know.  It's not just a one-horse race here, ya know?

I'm so detached now.  If harbaugh goes to the pro's he'll be bounced out in three or four years like spurrier, saban, petrino, et al, and then we'll get another crack at him /mild sarcasm.

for what a published contract lacks.  Also, there are some deep pockets around the program that can ore than make up the difference.  That's legal, right?

in the NFL is Belichick.  He was a disaster in Cleveland and then hooked up with Brady and is now a god in the NFL.  Guys like that are few and far between.

Remember, Parcells never won a SB without Belichick, but Belichick has won SBs without Parcells.

Bill Walsh is the last guy I can remember that is talked about like BB is now.

JH can always go there.  If he's going to bring UM back from the dark side of ANGAR, now is the time.

Plenty of famous NFL head coaches who have won Super Bowls (including some out of coaching t hat are always rumored to be interested in jobs):

  • Mike Tomlin
  • Sean Payton
  • Bill Cowher
  • Jon Gruden

Then if you reach a bit...

  • Tom Coughlin
  • Tony Dungy
  • Mike Shanahan

I know this is a Michigan blog and all - but those 7 coaches listed above are MUCH more famous than any college FB head coach outside of JoePa.

MichiganExile

Not a single coach on that list is more famous than Hayes, Schembechler, Bryant, Rockne, etc. I think the point he was trying to make was about how there are more iconic college coaches than NFL coaches, not just recently but throughout history.

DB is looking not only at Harbaugh, but also Urban Meyer.  Meyer could bring Loeffler (who obvously wants to come back) Heater, and Teryl Austin with him.  This is a real possiblity and one that would fit with the quarterback and talent already on the offensive side of the ball.

Maybe he saw how Lloyd was carted off the field like a Demigod after we put them in their place for the disparaging comments he made about our team the year before. Enshrinement in Schembechler Hall has to trump anything the Gators have. Heck, for all we know, he may have "retired" because we almost pulled the trigger on Rod last year. The point is a lot of people have a lot of different reasons for doing the things they do. Dave Brandon seems more willing to back up the money truck than Dollar Bill was. This reason likely benefits our cause considerably.

fatbastard

January 3rd, 2011 at 11:33 AM ^

that Urban Meyer had outs in his contract for M and ND.  So there is clearly the chance that he would want to come.  He surrounded himself with assistant who have M connections the last few years.  Chuck Heater.  Teryl Austin.  Scott Loeffler.  He "retired" about the time that Brandon would have been feeling out potential candidates.  He has stated "he will be back" to coach again.

the possibility that Harbaugh wouldn't come--for any number of reasons--has certainly loomed in many of our questions here on this board. Brandon better freaking well have a backup plan and, for me, Brady Hoke AIN'T IT.

This is my reasonable assumption about the situation.

According to a report yeasterday, the Niners have contacted Harbaugh. Because Michigan has not fired Rodriguez, Harbaugh probably expressed interest in the Niners. Why would he tell them he is not interested unless he has an offer from Michigan already? I think he is just leaving his options open, and therefore, expressed interest in the Niners job, leading to this report.

Because you and I may be among the few readers of MGoBlog who've been tortured by having to follow both Syracuse and Michigan football as they were being destroyed by Greg Robinson, regardless of what decision is made concerning Michigan's Head Coach in 2011, do you think that Dave Brandon at least wil give Michigan fans and the kittens of the world a belated Christmas present by firing Greg Robinson tomorrow at the latest?

is $$.  Those 108k+ seats in the stadium need to be sold and filled every week.  The high priced alumni/donors that buy those suites on a season by season basis won't be forking over $85k to continue this mess.  I had dinner with an 81 yr old guy a few weeks ago that was in one of those suites for thew Wisconsin game and members of three different suites all walked out after the third quarter and said they won't be re-upping their contracts on the suites if "that guy stays".

In the end it's all about money and the stadium and the athletic dept has to get paid for and all the extensions in the world won't sell the old alumni on RR, especially after the meltdown on Saturday.  DB is a business man and his business is the athletic dept.  If that stadium does sell out or if there are alot of empty seats on Saturday's, it's on him.

edit:  apparently I can't type on a laptop on Mondays. Errors repaired.

New Schefter discussion on Sports Center said that Harbaugh is supposedly bitter that Lloyd Carr passed over him in 2002 when he wanted to become the quarterbacks coach.

This is why poeple think that he might choose the NFL over Michigan - because he no longer has a love affair with Michigan. At the time he was passed over he said that he "would never forget it."
