CC: Rumor: Harbaugh-to-Michigan falls apart over weekend
I've never heard of this blog before, so I don't know if it's any more believable than any other source. Count me skeptical right now.
January 3rd, 2011 at 9:50 AM ^
....I missed it, no tv's close to my proximity. Could you please recap? Thanks in advance.
January 3rd, 2011 at 9:52 AM ^
I don't think they have any plans to talk with Harbaugh. Schefter update on JH coming at top of the hour
You're sitting in your ass at home today too, eh? Ain't it grand
January 3rd, 2011 at 9:33 AM ^
First, let's not kid ourselves about RR. I have been a big RR supporter, but it is over for him at UM. He cannot stay, given the shambles our football team is in after his third year.
Second, if DB had all his hopes pinned on JH, with no backup plan, then he is not the executive we have thought he is. This is the big decision of his tenure here and, like RR preparing for the bowl, DB has had over a month to prepare for it. If he is now at a loss for what to do, then we really are in big trouble. But I find this unlikely: surely any scenario that might occur to our minds has been fully explored and prioritized by DB.
So we just have to wait. Uggh.
January 3rd, 2011 at 11:00 AM ^
and since DB doesn't have to read all these CC threads, he has MUCH more time to focus on the task at hand.
Actually NONE of us HAVE to read these threads, but it's like the proverbial car crash...can't look away.
January 3rd, 2011 at 9:39 AM ^
In his post game presser, Denard responded "No response" when asked if he would return if RR was fired. Can someone please make me feel better about that comment, please.
Sorry to post an OT question, but it is just burning me up and there are no other recent threads on point.
January 3rd, 2011 at 9:41 AM ^
I have no inside info here, BUT...
- After the year he had, Denard would have his choice of programs.
- He is obviously a spread guy, and Harbaugh is obviously not.
- He has a redshirt year to burn if he transfers, so it wouldn't cost him any playing time.
Logic dictates that Denard would leave. The only reason he would stay is because he loves Michigan that much... but after seeing the fanbase take a dump on his coach (warranted or not), I imagine that good will is fading quickly.
January 3rd, 2011 at 10:03 AM ^
The power of team unity. I doubt he would leave his teammates in the lurch like that.
January 3rd, 2011 at 10:11 AM ^
And he's a genuine kid who likes doing the right thing. I just don't know if that is enough.
January 3rd, 2011 at 12:01 PM ^
This has already been discussed, but he did run a spread offense while at USD. Josh Johnson did get drafted by Tampa Bay, when Gruden was there. Of course, John Gruden never was satisfied with only have 3 QB on his roster.
January 3rd, 2011 at 9:42 AM ^
I said it in another post, but even commenting on that question would be extremely disrespectful to his head coach who is still under contract. Denard has more than proven himself to be an extremely humble and respectful kid. Take it FWIW
January 3rd, 2011 at 10:33 AM ^
feel better? maybe a little?
January 3rd, 2011 at 9:36 AM ^
January 3rd, 2011 at 9:40 AM ^
we're hiring fucking Les Miles
January 3rd, 2011 at 9:57 AM ^
Maybe he finally got through to the AD!
I wouldn't mind that though. Isn't he on a very short leash at LSU? He's also stated that coaching here would be his dream job. It would also satisfy the "Michigan Man" old school fans.
The roller coaster is reaching the top of the hill...
January 3rd, 2011 at 10:02 AM ^
January 3rd, 2011 at 10:11 AM ^
Google "les miles" and #2 in the instant results is your answer.
January 3rd, 2011 at 3:04 PM ^
Bill Calahan.
/s. Wait, not /s.
Fuck Les Miles.
January 3rd, 2011 at 9:42 AM ^
... why move across the country when you have a newborn? He won't even have to get a new telephone number!
If this program review was really just no more than "Help us JH!" then we were really worse off than anyone thought.
If JH wants the NFL this bad, he would probably have been a short-timer in AA. Yeah that would have been OK, but better get someone now who views Michigan as a destination, not a waypoint.
And, face it people, the over-under on RichRod's tenure is about 4 days at this point.
DB had to have a list, albeit a short one. "JH" written 5 times on a Post-It ain't a list.
January 3rd, 2011 at 9:44 AM ^
No "inside sources" but his gut tells him harbaugh wouldn't pass up chance to coach Michigan.
January 3rd, 2011 at 9:54 AM ^
No one tells that guy anything anymore.
January 3rd, 2011 at 9:45 AM ^
I need a source I can depend on.
January 3rd, 2011 at 9:46 AM ^
My guess that, before the bowl game, Brandon's plan was to hire Harbaugh if he would take the job, and if not retain Rodriguez (making all the right statements about the team showing consistent improvement, etc).
Problem is, then Saturday happened. Retaining Rodriguez certainly seems like a less feasible option than it did four days ago.
I'm sick to my stomach right now.
January 3rd, 2011 at 10:51 AM ^
1. I hope he made his decision after Ohio State and the deal is done with Harbaugh once the game is over tonight.
2. If the deal isn't done with Harbaugh, and he intendeds keep Rich Rod, why in the hell didn't he announce Rich would be back before the game Saturday.
3. Brandon is Martin and we are screwed again.
4. I just throw up thinking about Haloscan and the tracking of flights out of Willow Run starting tomorrow if Harbaugh goes to the NFL.
January 3rd, 2011 at 9:46 AM ^
Well if Harbaugh doesnt come here I think we should go after Mike Leach. He would be a good hire.
January 3rd, 2011 at 9:48 AM ^
Mike Leach would be a HORRIBLE hire at Michigan.
I can't tell if you're joking or not.
January 3rd, 2011 at 10:52 AM ^
Mangino would be a "big" hire.
January 3rd, 2011 at 9:50 AM ^
The Pirate Flag will NOT fly over the Big House; we don't want HC's with ongoing litigation, either.
January 3rd, 2011 at 9:50 AM ^
I really hope you're joking. If not, god help you.
January 3rd, 2011 at 9:53 AM ^
Two seconds of Mike Leach as head coach and people would be clamoring for RR's return.
January 3rd, 2011 at 9:54 AM ^
FWIW I was joking. And people thought RR did not fit in at Michigan.
January 3rd, 2011 at 10:04 AM ^
I had already arranged for your stay at the Funny Farm. Well, I bet I can call them back and cancel.
January 3rd, 2011 at 11:32 AM ^
Mike Leach has proven he's a very good coach. Just wait a few years and see how Tubberville does in Lubbock, TX. It won't be pretty. Man's an offensive genius.
However, this whole "fit" nonsense is BS. However DB hires, as fans, alumni, etc, we need to get behind that hire. If the M community shows support, the idiots over at that paper not to be named won't get much traction on any negative stories they try to write, because people will tell them to go shove it.
They got traction on the violations against RichRod because the base was divided from the beginning. Why Les Miles was viewed as the end all, be all, I'll never know. Yeah, he was "good", but he had tons of baggage. Anyhow, a divided base gave some former M players a cover to transfer (Boren), the media to write what they wanted, and enough initial support to turn a few extra hours of practice into Michigan's first major violation in football.
All of that has an effect on players, staff and the head coach. If RichRod isn't fighting to prove he's a Michigan Man (again, look at what that actually means - and btw - Lloyd Carr - not a Michigan man, nor is Brady Hoke), then maybe things are different in terms of execution, recruiting, and even making staff decisions.
I'm just frustrated with this whole fit nonsense. Here is what I want out of the next head coach:
1) Does he graduate players and represent the ideals of the University well (academic and athletic excellence)
2) Does he win games
That's pretty much it. Leach graduated players more than any other Big 12 school.
Mike Leach won a ton of games.
Now, if only he'd forget he's a lawyer and can win his case against TTU, drop the case and he'll find himself hired.

Sorry to disappoint you. haha
January 3rd, 2011 at 9:46 AM ^
Here's hoping Harbs is just trying to smash any upheaval in his lockerroom prior to his bowl game tonight. You can damn well guarantee yourself that ESPN's pre-game show will have plenty to say about the subject tonight.

January 3rd, 2011 at 9:57 AM ^
then maybe we'll finally get a chance to see who all the "big name" coaches that have "supposedly" expressed interest in coaching Michigan are.....
According to Doug Karsch, we'd be SHOCKED at the names.
He referenced Bob Stoops as an example of just how big, but stressed that it WAS NOT actually Stoops.
January 3rd, 2011 at 10:14 AM ^
Would a name like John Gruden fit here? He was rumored to have talked with Miami, so maybe he is interested in the college game.
Also would he be accepted by the fanbase? I am a personal fan of his but know he is a polorizing type of a coach.
January 3rd, 2011 at 11:14 AM ^
I just assumed he was talking about a "big name" college coach or two (because of the Stoops reference). I hadn't really thought about the NFL angle.
Either way, I have no clue who he was referring to, but would LOVE to know.
January 3rd, 2011 at 9:56 AM ^
Regarding money, couldn't we guarantee JH the same $$ figure over a longer contract?
IE:
NFL pays $4M/year for 5 years
UM pays $3M/year for 7 years
January 3rd, 2011 at 10:12 AM ^
January 3rd, 2011 at 9:58 AM ^
If he's now going to SF, they backed up the dump truck of cash to his front door. Thinking $5-$7M per year.
January 3rd, 2011 at 10:10 AM ^
Yes, Harbaugh or any other coach is going to make less money in college. That said, for Harbaugh or others it comes down to whether or not you want to be a somewhat anonymous coach in the NFL or an icon in college. They don't name buildings or stadiums after you in the NFL.
January 3rd, 2011 at 10:32 AM ^
Very true. Only if you win a SB in the NFL as a head coach, the "fame" you speak of above becomes a moot point.
Harbaugh has a chance to cement his legacy at Michigan. But if he cemented a legacy in the NFL, his name would ring out to a much broader audience.
January 3rd, 2011 at 10:53 AM ^
As many people know JoePa as know Lombardi. A legend is a legend no matter where you go.
