CC: Rivals mods seem to be expecting some changes

The mods over at Rivals posted an Inside the Fort (super-premium info) article today.  And while I won't quote any exact information because of its premium nature, it seemed to be hinting at some big things going on in Ann Arbor:

- It sounds like an NFL coach plans to be in Ann Arbor next year (they wouldn't say whether it's a head coach or a coordinator)

- It sounds like there might be some academic ineligibility for the bowl game

- From my interpretation, it sounds like they believe Rodriguez will be here next year.

As you might expect, there's a lot of reading between the lines to be done.  So take this for what it's worth.

Have a good holiday, everyone!

Maybe it is Bill Sheridan who

Maybe it is Bill Sheridan who is currently in the inside linebacker coach for the Miami Dolphins.  He obviously has some ties through his current employer and his son.  What if it was a package deal with him and Nick.  Nick would come back to be one of those graduate assistant coaches.

limited sample size obviously

but I know a lot of Giants fans who thought he was a terrible DC and I totally agree.

the giants defense regressed tremendously under him despite all the talent they had. he took a pressure-based, man-to-man defense under steve spagnuolo with all that pass rush talent they had (umenyiora, tuck, kiwanuka, pierre-paul, cofield) and made them into a dropback zone coverage defense.

the results were disastrous and he was let go after a year. the father-son connection or not, i would be very disappointed if he were hired. i would rather get a proven, or even unproven guy rather than a guy who failed spectacularly in his only try...

If this info is true, then RR is returning

Then it is almost certainly a new DC.  There is no way DB would bring in an NFL coach to become M head coach: he is too well aware of the mixed performance of NFL coaches at the college level.

Please no

I am a Giants fan and I do not want to see Bill Sheridan on the sideline of any team I am ever rooting for again.

I agree...

No offense to the kid, I know he did his best under the circumstances, but Nick gave me all the Sheridan I can take on the UM sideline. One was enough.

not to

agree or disagree anybody they get in as the DC, or even if Gerg stays the D will be better.  How much better is the real question.

Looking at NFL coaches that

Looking at NFL coaches that might have a michigan tie-in....brings us back to Turgo again. Have to imagine the changes on the staff will be strictly on the D side of the ball.

Hopefully it's not a lot of kids who are having academic problems.

All in all the bowl cant get here fast enough and getting all this CC crap behind us will be nice.

I hope you're right, but I'm thinking at least one starter/contributor is in trouble or else they probably wouldn't bring it up. My guess is that it's a freshman who is still getting acclimated to the football/acamedic workload.

I said this in the past, but

I wouldn't be surprised if Reggie Herring from the Cowboys comes in as dc. He was DC at Clemson when RR was OC. Dallas runs a 3-4. Him and RR are good friends still.

3-3-5

I don't think the coach necessarily has to be a Michigan Man but more so a 3-3-5/3-4 guy. Now look into coaches that run those sets and I think u will be on to something.

I'd imagine the friendship

I'd imagine the friendship with RRod probably counts more than the Michigan Man thing in the search unless DB is using his magic to pull someone we might not otherwise get.

I'm confused

I'm confused as to why so many posters are quick to villify GERG for the defensive woes and at the same time complain about a) RR's "interference" on the defensive side of the ball (e.g. forcing the 3-3-5) and b) the youth/inexperience in the defensive personnel.

Which is it? Is the defense bad because of GERG or is it bad because of youth/RR's meddling? If it is the latter, then why should GERG get the axe?

The other thing I find confusing is that many posters are advocating ANOTHER change in defensive co-ordinator when many of those same posters have proclaimed that the constant changes in DC's/defenses is a major contributor to the defensive woes.

There just seems to be a lot of inconsistency/logic errors in the complaints re: the defense.

I really don't think changing

I really don't think changing defensive coordinators is that big of a deal.  It has been blown out of proportion at Michigan over the past few years.  Defenses often improve when a new coordinator comes to town.

I'm certainly annoyed that Rodriguez has meddled in the defense as much as he has, but I don't think it's so much that Greg Robinson is a horrible coach/coordinator...

...it's more that Greg Robinson doesn't fit what Rodriguez wants, so it's pointless to keep Robinson around.

Evidence

Do we really have evidence he is meddling in the defense?   Other than the supposed overthrow of Schaefer at Purdue what evidence do we have of this?   From everything we see RR handles the offens and Gerg handles the defense and if there is a problem(lots this year) RR talks with Gerg.

The fact we run a defense

That the D-coordinator has never run before. Much like we did in the Purdue game.

Gerg going to the 3-3-5 isn't

Gerg going to the 3-3-5 isn't enough evidence for you? And I would say completely hijacking your coordinators scheme at the end of the season to put in a defense that is almost unique to Rich Rodriguez coached teams was evidence enough that he does a lot more on defense than we think.

Or else

Gibson and Tall want to run the 3-3-5 because it is all they know, and RR goes along with it.

What do you think

about position coach changes (Gibson, for example)? Would that be more impactful than a D coordinator change, or do you think the D coordinator change doesn't make as much difference because the position coaches would stay the same? If the D coordinator brought his own staff would he be capable of making a more sweeping difference?

I agree with you and it will

I agree with you and it will be kind of sad  to read the "Look what happens when GERG isn't here" posts next year. It won't matter who the DC is next year. The defense is going to get better under any coordinator simply because we probably won't be running a bunch of freshman or at least highly inexperienced players out there not to mention we get our best two cornerbacks back next year.

not to agree or dis agree on DC coordinator change I just believe that the Def. will improve.  If these kids work out as hard as DRob and Twolf worked in the off season.  The D will be okay/

My opinion is

It's not only the inexperience, but the defense has been alligned incorrectly on many of the big plays that they gave up. It's one thing to have young players, but a good coordinator should at least have them in good positions to make plays. Too many times this year that wasn't the case. Any time you have your linebackers line up 3 yards off the ball you are asking for trouble.

thanks for the info

thanks for the info magnus..

This makes me think about what RR said in an article several wks ago.  He mentioned how he himself has been taking notes and grading his assistants coaches this past year and will evaluate them at the end of the year similiar to Brandons decision.  Should be interesting to hear if there is truth to this

If there is indeed truth to an NFL coach of some kind coming to mich and RR staying, i would obviously expect greg robinson to be gone, because someone has to take the fall if it isn't RR who goes

He's also a coach who has had

He's also a coach who has had a history of terrible Defenses everywhere he has gone, other than Texas(a team loaded with nfl talent) and the bronco's where he won a superbowl..with again incredibly talented team..

Everywhere else he has been his defensive stats have not been very good.  Someone posted them all on here a while back and it was alarming

You ask why does he have to be the scape goat?  Hmm.. well maybe you didn't watch our defense this year..  I know we had young talent, injured players and gerg was running a system he has never run before..  But i fail to believe that there isn't a D coordinator out there that couldn't make our guys play with more fire, and more desire..

I don't know why people are so defensive of criticism of RR (like in this post), yet so willing to throw GERG under the bus.  What proof does anyone have that RR didn't and that its ALL GERG's fault?  I'm pretty sure the head coach is responsible for the team's performance (on both sides of the ball), so even if you want to completely blame GERG, RR still holds some responsibility for hiring him.

That's not how the majority

That's not how the majority of Rivals posters interpreted the RR info, but obviously they left a lot of room for interpretation.

I would, however, pay good money to watch the staff of TheWolverine, GoBlueWolverine, and GBMWolverine participate in a cage match to the death. They all seem to royally despise each other.

IMHO it is because no one

IMHO it is because no one truly knows what is going to happen and everyone is just throwing out their opinions with their own particular biases.  TheWolverine doesn't like RR because they don't have the same level of inside access like they did with Carr.  GBW likes RR because they have more inside info than ever with their carry-over insider. GBMW dislikes anything to do with GBW (and grammar/spelling) because their writers got banned by the Beav.

What’s being floated

What’s being floated today is that there’s more than one potential outcome here, but that would mean plenty of work to do following the bowl game (starting with Rodriguez’s evaluation) - and we’re not seeing it based on what we’ve heard from everyone who knows how Brandon operates.

I took this to mean that there would be plenty of work to change regimes, and that behind-the-scenes work does not seem to be happening.  In other words, the groundwork isn't being laid to start things over again with a new coach.  I can maybe see how people would interpret that line otherwise, but that's my take on it.

As far as the ineligibility, I'm not too worried. Before the season, the mods were almost certain that Shaw and Tate would be ineligible and everything turned out fine.

Rampant Speculation...

Buddy Ryan mention led me to Jets site-- Bob Sutton is their LB coach, grad. ass't under Bo (no wonder they drafted Hobson & Harris).  [Was moved back to LB coach after 3 years as DC when Ryan came over.  Since Ryan's a defensive guru, keeping him says something about his ability.  But could make someone look elsewhere...]

And look at his hair!

Even more rampant speculation/daydreaming from that website alone:

Jets' "defensive line/defense coach" is Mark Carrier, whose previous job was as Baltimore's DB coach after a few years coaching high school and college.... And I hear he played pretty well himself... Hmm.  Knows defensive line and secondary....

And if we could afford a special teams coach...

Okay.  Back to reality.

If there are any key players ineligible for the bowl

game that will factor into DB's analysis of the job RR is/has done.  That cannot be favorable.   RR has hung his hat on the academic numbers while he has been coach and I believe they have been favorable.  But if any key players are missing on Jan. 1 and there is a loss that day, it cannot bode well for our embattled coach.

If there is a loss, academic eligibilty questions, especially a punter(OMG) and the number DB has to work with and he waits two months to announce the coach is staying, he's going to have some serious questions to answer in January.  A stud DC from the NFL may not be enough of an answer if the rest is true.  Will he have to run the 3-3-5 too?

... you're not one of those people who cried "RICH ROD HASN'T BEATEN OUR RIVALS ND, OSU, and MSU" and then once he got to 2-1 against ND started saying "Well, Notre Dame doesn't count, RIch Rod hasn't beaten our important rivals."

This isn't true.  Michigan

This isn't true.  Michigan expects to beat MSU and has done so with regularity in the past (67-30-5 all time and 13-7 over the last 20 years.)  MSU had never beaten Michigan thrice in a row until now.

On the other hand, ND is a historically strong program that Michigan is happy to play 0.500 ball against and that's exactly what has happened since the series resumed in the 70s.  Michigan has never beaten ND thrice in a row in the modern era.

During Rodriguez's brief tenure, he's managed to meet expectations against ND but has fallen way short against MSU.

So you think State would

So you think State would never be as good as us because we expect to beat them every year.  State will have some teams like they do now and in the 60's.  They have a great team this year and beat most teams.  MSU is big for in state recrutiing and beating ND is better for out of state recruiting.  Both rivalries are important.  I am not happy we lose to State and I wouldn't be happy if things were switched and we lost to ND for 3 straight years.

Ok, I didn't read all the post above.  MSU is the worst 1 loss team and isn't great.  How many teams in the country from BCS conferences or all of D1 have a better record.  And worst one loss team.  They beat the other one loss team from the B1G and didn't play the other.

First they didn't get trucked

First they didn't get trucked by 30 at home.  That was away at Iowa.  Second, I hate State, but just calling it as I see it.  Second, give me a break about they could easily have lost 4-5 games, did they.  You can say SDSU should be undefeated since they lost all their games by less than a TD.  They lost.

Whether MSU is a bigger game

Whether MSU is a bigger game than ND is debatable, but the consequences of losing to MSU are far worse than the consequences of losing to ND.  It's a Big Ten game, and it has a huge impact on the local perception of the two programs.  I'd trade our ND record (2-1) under RR for the MSU record (0-3) in a heartbeat.

Thanks for the info, Magnus

I'm a little skeptical about adding an NFL defensive coordinator, however, unless the coach has significant college experience as well (Michigan Man or not).  I don't think whatever provides a decided schematic advantage at the NFL level will necessarily relate to a comparative advantage in college given the differences between the games.

Where do you get your servers? Kmart?

Pretty fair amount of metal in a server sitting in a data center unless Brian is hosting from his basement on a PC.

That is what the internets are for.....

In all seriousness though I appreciate that DB is keeping this as well concealed as he is.  The last thing we need as a fanbase and program is a repeat of the circus that was our previous AD's poor excuse for a coaching search.

I'm not advocating a change in DC just for the sake of change

But, I think that if DB gives Rich a chance to stay and finish what he started, he should demand that a quality (tough-minded) defensive co-ordinator come in, pick his own staff and scheme and RR stay out of the way.  I don't know that an NFL DC is necessarily the answer, but if RR stays, then an overhaul of the defense(scheme and staff) is essential.  The D philosophy to this point hasn't worked out as anyone planned.

No matter what, let's all put down our pitchforks and torches and have a Merry Christmas.

Have a very Merry Maize and Blue Christmas everyone!

Singletary or Ken Norton Jr... just for fun...

either when Harbaugh takes Singletary's job;

or since Norton Jr likely is realizing the Pete Carroll ship isn't going to float for long in Seattle...

I'd take either at DC and run the 3-4 (lack of depth at DT would certainly become less of an issue).

Not to say Magnus is wrong (there is a lot of reading between the lines), but the Rivals free board has the opposite interpretation (RR gone).  Either way, I don't believe anything has really leaked. Bow to the revival of Fort Schembechler!!

We'll find out what will happen shortly

We'll find out what will happen after the bowl game.  I'm wishing that RR stays until the end of his contract and part of the deal may be to hire a  big name DC.  I'm not really sure if winning or losing the bowl game is going to make a big difference in DB decision. DB may be weighing the end of semester grades more so than pre bowl practices and performance in the bowl game. I have this sinking feeling we will see a new HC next year, otherwise, DB would have announced that RR would get at least one more season after the OSU game. But may be DB is continuing his fact finding for a final decision after the bowl season?

Maybe some truth here

Fox is in trouble with the panthers and the NFL coaching merry-go-round is sure to commence just after Christmas. Sounds like Blue wants to settle its changes as quickly as possible. I stand by my earlier statement that Gerg may just move to a position coach as they bring in a new DC. I don't see DB pulling the radical change lever. But hey, these are all rumors.

cc:my interpretation of rivals

I am a member of the Fort at rivals. My interpretation of ITF  is that RR is most likely gone if DB can come to terms with JH. I also think that is how most are interpreting it. The Wolverine IMO tends to be anti-RR, for what it is worth. I personally find it hard to believe that DB has already made a decision to can RR. IMO he has a duty and obligation to tell the man most affected by this decision, that of course being RR. I also think that if he had made a decision that in this day and age it would be impossible to keep quiet.I tend to take him at his word and think he truly has not made up his mind. He probably also has a back-up plan in place if he decides after sitting down with RR and comes away unsatisfied with how RR is running program

You make some good points

You make some good points here.

IME, however, how RR is running the program doesn't matter here. The issue, most likely, is that this is the perfect, and perhaps only, time that Jim Harbaugh can be hired to come to Michigan in the next 5 years. He's a pretty good fit and he and Brandon are friends.

Look at WVU. New AD comes in, decides Stewie can't lead them to national titles, and moves him aside within a year. Not too different here.

So, the issue most likely is not anything related to RR, and RR knows it. Brandon is new, and he wants his guy in charge. The issue is: can David Brandon secure Jim Harbaugh's signature on a contract? If he can, RR is gone. It's nothing against RR, IME. It's simply Brandon succeeding or failing with the guys he wants in charge.

If that were the case though,

If that were the case though, don't you think he would have immediately dismissed RR after the OSU game in order to get the new team in place as quickly as possible, and don't you think that, if he had decided shortly after taking over as AD, that he would have made some contact with JH during the season and started the process then? I just think, on a credibility and ethical plane, that if he had decided he wants his man in place, that he would have told RR this earlier and allowed him to move on. Instead, RR is busting his tail trying to sell the Michigan program and get his players ready for a bowl game. There is something decpetive and distasteful about all of this if you are indeed correct. I also think the players, being young and impressionable, are going to be disgusted if they find out that DB made up his mind awhile back to fire RR but kept up a charade of indecision.

Well, perhaps, but I would

Well, perhaps, but I would imagine Brandon is allowing Harbaugh to coach his team in the BCS game.

Furthermore, regarding contacting Brandon, the fact that Harbaugh would highly like to coach Michigan is no secret amongst rubes like us, let alone friends like Brandon and Harbaugh.

Let's not coat this with deception, indecision, etc. Brandon has to make the choice. If part of the evaluation is "is there a better coach available right now?," he's likely not going to know that until January 4th. So, in that sense, his mind is not yet made up.

Either way, I'll be happy, because if RR stays the defensive staff will likely get upgraded with 3 new grad assistants (remember, the restriction on grad assistants is done after the bowl game) and also perhaps new staff members, in addition to a lot of quality players coming off their redshirt years and 10 returning defensive starters. No matter who is coaching this team, Michigan will win at least 10 games next year. I'm stoked.

Brandon's only responsibility

Brandon's only responsibility is do what's best for the University of Michigan.  And that may screw over Rodriguez, but that's just how things work.  One way or another it sucks that Rodriguez has to wait this long to get a resolution to this situation.  The whole thing has got to be incredibly tough on him and his family.  But at the end of the day, he'll get another job if this doesn't work out.  It won't be at a big name school at Michigan, but someone like Clemson will give him another shot.

That ITF was among the more worthless things they've written in a while. They said absolutely nothing, and were vague enough to ensure just about anyone could find something to support their opinion. There were no hints, and there was no subtlety. They could have saved me the 60 seconds it took to read it by saying "Could go either way."

This has been the MO of

This has been the MO of TheWolverine since they lost their inside sources.  I can't blame them as they are running a business and need to cultivate a readership but they lost me as a subscriber a couple of years ago when I noticed them going down the path they are currently on (innuendo meant to stir the pot with little inside info).  They have some very talented guys on staff like Chait and Helmholdt but the others are so bad (daddy stories?) that I can't tolerate it over there.  I am very interested in who will take TheWolverine's spot on Rivals as I would like a reason to resubscribe to Rivals simply for the media and national articles (which IMHO are vastly superior to those available from Scout).
