There is not going to be a lock-out. At least not one that will impact the regular season.

Wouldn't bet on that

My company is one of the major NFL sponsors; all of the advice we're getting is saying we should expect to miss at least the September games. We're making multi-million dollar decisions based on this advice. Doesn't mean it's true, but the smart money says there will be at least a couple of games missed...

Bo would never allow JH near the team

after JH threw the team and university under the bus concerning academics.  It's really a shame that Bo is not still alive because JH wouldn't even be a viable option.  Not only that, but RR would have never been treated the way he has since he has been here.

i hate the phrase "throw __ under the bus." it is lazy.

i hate the phrase "throw __ under the bus."  it is lazy.  perhaps i would take your posts and position more seriously if you were to use actual words and sentences that make sense.

for example: "i felt that what JH said about the university and football players academics was unfair and self serving."

then i could say "oh, really? what did he say?"

and then you would say "he said: “Michigan is a good school and I got a good education there,“but the athletic department has ways to get borderline guys in and, when they’re in, they steer them to courses in sports communications. They’re adulated when they’re playing, but when they get out, the people who adulated them won’t hire them.”"

and i would say "is that not true?"

I think what made it

I think what made it "throwing under the bus" in many people's minds is that he never said it while Bo was alive (and it was a shot directed at Bo and the program under Bo) and he said it as if he didn't do the same sort of thing at Stanford but the numbers and enrollment records don't lie.  No one would have a problem with what he said if he had talked about college football in general and then committed to not doing that with his squad but he didn't.

I'm firmly in the camp that says "there's too much damn money for there to be a serious labor dispute in the NFL."  That being said.  NFL coaches are going to get paid regardless.  If Harbaugh wants to be an NFL coach, he might never get a better shot.

If someone gave me the option

If someone gave me the option to either work my ass off and turn a program around for an insane amount of money, or to sit my ass down and do nothing for an insane amount of money, I think I would choose the latter. I don't think the threat of a lockout scares the coaches much at all.

Transition would be much more difficult

I still think some coaches would be hesitant to commit with a potential lockout.  Will there be an offseason camp or preseason?  I would imagine the transition to a new coaching staff would be much more difficult without the ability to work with your players.  And in the NFL, patience runs thin.  Possibly even thinner than in college.  Josh McDaniels and Mike Singletary didn't even make it through 2 full years.  Eric Mangini has already been fired twice and his head coaching career is only 4 years old.

Of course they are.  It's a Michigan man going to Michigan.  If it were anyone else, the talks would have not only broken down but the potential coach would have insulted Dave Brandon's mother.

My problem

I have been a very strong supporter of RR and still am.  If this Harbaugh thing goes down, I want to look to it with enthusiasm.  My conscience tells me that I would be a whore for doing so and would be cheating on my love for RR.  At this point, for me nothing feels right.

I'm With You

I have nothing against RR and maybe he'll be successful somewhere else later in his career but he's certainly earned what's coming his way later this week.

It's not like there was some conspiracy out to get him.  His teams are getting embarrassed on the field.  It's not a good situation for anybody (coaches, players, University, fans...).  He put all of his eggs in one basket and those eggs broke.  It's time to move on.

In addition to the NFL issues

In addition to the NFL issues that may be looming, there is always an open coaching slot in the NFL.  He may never get the chance to coach at Michigan again.  This is his chance.

Double Digits

Nobody is asking for double digit wins at this point, they've just stopped accepting losses by double digits (10, 10, 17, 20, 30 and 38).

Why would JH care about a lockout?

I'm pretty sure coaches and the administrative staff still get paid whether the games are played or not.  If there is an extended lockout, the NFL might even build scab teams and play the games anyway.

I agree.

I agree.

I would gladly sit on my ass while collecting a nice, fat paycheck, but the kind of people who rise to the level where they are a head coach at either a major college program or an NFL franchise are usually the most hard driving, type A personalities on the planet. These types of people usually HATE to be inactive; sitting around for several months with nothing to do would be anathema to these folks.

why not?

Do you have a more important, relevant topic to discuss?

For the weeks leading up to the bowl game, people like you said "can't we wait until after the season to discuss this?"  Well, it is after the season.  We got blown out - again.  I think that this is as good a time as any to discuss this.

Oh, and look at the number of comments in the CC threads.  Now look at the number of comments in the other threads.  Yeah, people clearly want to discuss this.

to me, it's hard to

to me, it's hard to understand why a guy who thrives on being a motivational, intense coach would choose the NFL over college. there's obviously a lot more that goes into those decisions, but it has to be hard for a passionate coach to give a fiery speech and see his NFL players rolling their eyes.

I think we should just drop the CC label now

Every thread not dealing with CC should now be labeled OT.  The feeding frenzy is starting turning into an avalanche.

In regards to the potential lockout, I had that same thought earlier today.  I am actually surprised how many NFL coaches are getting fired with the labor uncertainty right now for next season.  I imagine it would be hard to transition to a new staff when the players may not even be available for the offseason camp and possibly preseason.

it was a joke

Seeing that the CC has dominated the conversation, everything else has seemed OT.

If he's getting paid

If he's getting paid.....clearly if we don't get him this decision comes down to money and a desire for lifestyle (i.e. location). We all know that even if there is a lockout, it won't go on indefinitely and at some point likely midway in the 2011 season or at least for the 2012 season, a deal will get done. Lockouts don't mean coaches don't get paid so he may even enjoy the situation of having some time with the family.

He may get paid, yes, however

He may get paid, yes, however a lockout would mean that he could have absolutely no contact with any of his new players, until a resolution is worked out.  If by all indications this is going to be late August/early September,t his would make installing his system into the NFL very difficult, and would hamper at least his first season, and who knows beyond that.  All things considered, the NFL lockout may play very heavily on his decision.

getting paid

Since he will be getting paid the NFL lockout shouldn't be a negative.  He can still do planning and work on building his staff.

Agreed.

More time to prep for a new incoming coach might actually be a benefit.

If JH goes to the NFL and they lock out the players...

...JH very well might wind up coaching the new draftees from college, old guys who are past their prime, players who don't have enough talent to make the regular teams, and scabs.

There is a lot of money at stake in the NFL and it is obvious the owners don't like the percentages the players are earning.

Will NCAA football be the only football on TV come September? My guess is it will happen.

edit; it is obvious there is a better way to spell obvious

Ugh. Notre Dame. Here we come.

Anyone else a little concerned about the 14 year wander through CFB wilderness we could be embarking on?  Changing our coach every 2-3 years?

Harbaugh supporters say Rich Rod supporters have blind faith in him, but then somehow believe that JH will wave some magic wand and we'll have depth on defense and more experience at key positions (like QB).
