I don't think that is correct.  I believe NFL rules do not allow any NFL team from communicating with Harbaugh until the season is over.  Then and only then can SF grant persmission.  If Michigan has come to some type of financial agreement with SF then Oakland will never get the chance.

I guess we will know soon enough!

My understanding was that Harbaugh wants more personel control and the 49ers aren't willing to give it to him.  Oakland has Reggie McKenzie as GM, who has done a pretty good job drafting and cutting the fat from the roster over the past few years.  Actually, as a Michigan fan, I think Reggie has done a really great job. For Oakland to fire this guy now just so they could get Harbaugh would be a huge mistake.  I say, Oakland should give Reggie McKenzie more control and go after a coach with a defensive background, like Mark Dantonio or Rex Ryan and leave Jim Harbaugh alone.

Not only do they have to get JH to agree to terms. They also have to get SF to agree to some kind of trade. I just don't see SF allowing Harbaugh to go to Oakland. I think if SF has a choice they would rather see JH go to Michigan for the next 6-8 years. Then they don't have to worry about him coming back to haunt them.

I don't see how in the hell the Raiders could make a case for themselves. It's like they think they can sell Harbaugh on staying in the Bay Area, as if he has no clue they're probably off to an LA within the next couple years.

It's Oakland. Consider: - The potential embarrassment for the Niners if JH turns Oakland around (at SF's expense) would be astronomical. They would be the NFL's laughing stock and share Oakland's TV market. - The Niners would gain mid round picks but little else in return for JH. Meanwhile, the Raiders would lose those same draft picks. That leaves only free agents as the path to building team depth, but the salary cap would loom large. - JH would be joining a perennially losing franchise that had just paid a king's ransom to get him. At the same time, losing all those draft picks (the Niners would expect a few mid-rounders at least) would affect the team's depth. The likelihood that he would be competing for a SB would be remote at best.

This seems unlikely.  It's not impossible, but I have a hard time believing Oakland is really in play.  Would SF really consider dealing him to Oakland.  Does the owner and GM of SF really want to have to deal with constant scrutiny by the fans and press if he is successful there?

I think it is more likely they would reach some type of buyout deal with UM to ensure Oakland never gets a shot at him.  If he is at Michigan, the narrative for SF is easily he wanted to go back to Michigan and ressurect the program.

This really feels like a stretch by Rappaport to not totally flip flop on the JH wants to be in the NFL angle.  He can win the argument either way now by concocting his own narrative too.  SF didn't want JH in Oakland or another NFL team and made the decision to go to Michigan over the NFL his only option.  Even though it is absolute bunk!

As stated above, from the NFL anti-tampering policy:http://www.dawgtalkers.net/uploads/2009%20NFL%20Anti-Tampering%20Policy.pdf

No club, nor any person employed by or otherwise affiliated with a club, is permitted to tamper with a non-player employee of another club. Unless otherwise provided for in this Policy, no club may request permission to discuss employment with a non-player, non-coach employee of another club, whether or not that employee is under contract, during the employer club’s playing season, defined as the period from the opening of preseason training camp through the club’s final game of the season, including postseason if applicable.

Further down:

Head Coaches. These rules govern cases involving head coaches:

  •  Under Contract. During a club’s playing season, including postseason if applicable (excluding Pro Bowl), the following actions are prohibited concerning a head coach who is under contract, unless the involved head coach has been dismissed by his club: (1) No head coach may discuss or accept employment for the current or a future season with another club in the League; (2) no club may request permission to discuss employment with a head coach for the current or a future season; and (3) no employer club may grant another club permission to discuss employment with its head coach for the current or a future season.

  • The prohibition in number (1) above also applies in the off-season, unless the coach’s contract has expired or has been terminated, or his club has granted him permission to explore other employment opportunities, or his club has granted another club the opportunity to contact him.

  •

    Protocol

As a common courtesy and to avoid inter-club disputes, whenever a club wishes to contact a non-player employee of another club about possible employment, such inquiring club must first notify the owner or operating head of the employer club to express interest.

Despite the other requirements of this section on protocol, if a public announcement has been made by an employer club that it has dismissed or will not be retaining an employee, such employee and any clubs interested in him or her are under no obligation to observe the club-to-club courtesies of this section.

I think the 49ers have not said they will terminate Harbaugh publically, so the Raiders have to wait until the 49ers are done with their season and then request permission to contact Harbaugh.  However, one potential caveat could be if Harbaugh has a clause in his contract that allows him to have off-season contact with another team.

If Jimmy's agent meets with the Raiders he probably, if permitted, will do so as to not burn that NFL bridge for waaaay down the road like when Jimmy is 59. As for him not coming to M...the survey says XXX. Ian stirring the pot with no ingredients yet again...foolish.

It would be quite an embarrassment to the 49ers if they allowed Oakland to get JH and he turned the Raiders around. It would have to be a huge deal where Oakland sends the 49ers many draft picks and Harbaugh agrees to the trade to the Raiders. If Jim resigns that means there will be no trade and the 49ers will never agree to let Oakland talk to Jim. If JH shows up at Michigan on Tuesday, I will be 100 percent confident JH will be our coach. If nothing happens next week then I would say it ain't happening and the 49ers and JH have worked out a deal for a trade. Hopefully, Michigan has their plan B ready to go. Who knows, may be it will be Les Miles walking onto the court at halftime of the Michigan game Tuesday night.

The more serious and less flippant answer than the one I gave on the first page is that we already know he's unreliable so don't sweat it.

Schefter at least couches things in "probablies" so he doesn't look totally stupid.

This just in - Rappaport reported the Buccaneers will also be in the Bay Area.  Not sure if they will talk to Harbaugh

Col. as a Michigan fan 1st, 49ers fan 4th, I'd like to think that being a "Raiders/Michigan" fan is just not gonna cut it. If I, like most on this site, have been hoping the 49ers lose to increase the JH-to-Michigan equation, your eagerness to accept the Raiders' poaching here is not acceptable!

As another noted earlier after reading the Raider and Buckeye fans' replies to the Pequeno tweets: "Raider and Buckeye fans - there's a pair that deserve each other"

to negotiate with the NFL, the reverse is more likely to be true at this point.  If Harbaugh had a few loose ends to clear up with the UM contract this week (eg re: assistant pay and other important details), his agent would advise him to appear to leave open his NFL options.

Jets aren't an option.  The owner isn't a Harbaugh fan.  Atlanta will probably be in the playoffs, which pushes them out of the timeline.  Oakland is the only job that even remotely looks possible, but they are cheap, 49ers brass won't want him there, and they aren't giving JH GM roles.  I think Ian's report is from Oakland side of things (wishful thinking)
