CC: The nuclear option

Submitted by Ron Utah on

With Hackett taking his sweet time in firing (or retaining!) Hoke, I have read a lot of material out there that says this search comes down to two names if neither Harbaugh wants the job: Les Miles and Greg Schiano.

To me, those are both unappealing options.  But if forced to choose one, whom would it be?

CLICK HERE  to take the survey.  I will post the results later.

UPDATE: With 100 votes in, it 96% Miles, 4% Schiano.  Actually, there are 857 votes in, but the percentages have been essentially the same all through the voting.

Part of the purpose of this poll was to give an unofficial voice to the fans...I knew Schiano would be unpopular, and I hope in some small way this helps the people in charge of things see how the fanbase views that hire.

I will post a few more polls in the next few days that should be more competitive.

I don't accept OP's premise that options B and C are Miles and Schiano.

With that being said, I'd rather have Schiano than Miles, due more to my feelings about Miles than anything... feel free to send your downvotes this way.

  • Miles is bad guy who over-signs and cuts players on a regular basis
  • He's 61.
  • His formula for success is ridiculously good recruiting (see above), great coordinators (mostly on defense), and a large amount of luck (which is admittedly helped by his aggressive game strategy). Sound familiar? Imagine Hoke's Michigan teams with three additional awesome recruits every year, the 3 worst players cut from the team every year, and Hoke's 2011 gambler streak. That's Les Miles.

I'm no fan of Schiano, but I want Miles far, far away from this program.

Who cares how old he is. It only matters how long he will want to coach.

Why can't he still recruit well at UM? A MAC coach that talks like he has marbles in his mouth was pulling in great classes, Les would still recruit well at UM.

Another fun fact, he will be allowed to bring "good" assistants to UM.

Luck. Complete horseshit. He didn't win the SEC and an MNC by being lucky.

I'd rather have JH and maybe someone else, but Les would do just fine at UM.

Good recruiting and surrounding yourself with great assistant coaches is pretty much everyone's formula for success.  Oh, and developing the players that you get.  As for luck?  Well, I suppose good fortune could last for over a decade, but it doesn't seem likely.

I would take Les if Harbaugh isn't available.  Yeah, I know the various arguments against him.  At this point I'm beaten down enough that I really don't care anymore.  If he still is interested despite being jerked around by us twice already, he must really love this school.  As long as he understands that some things that are pernissible at LSU aren't here (and I imagine he would), I'll take him.

I would suggest a follow-on survey:  Who would you rather have as a coach?  Brady Hoke with some staff changes, vs. Anyone not named Harbaugh or Miles.

other considerations if Harbaughs unavailable like:
-Paul Johnson
-Mark Richt
-chip Kelly (Florida looking into)
-Todd Graham
-always wanted Chris Peterson but unlikely
Whomever has to be really bright, demanding and able to "sell" against Meyer, Franklin, Anderson & Dantonio.

Per a tweet from Chris Mortenson: Harbaugh says when it comes to his future, he 'has a recessive gene in worrying about his future' and he hasn't participated in that speculation. That said, I prefer Miles to Schiano.

Just no Schiano. We'll be looking for a new coach in 3-4 years. He'd be a step up from Hoke, but he's not going to beat Meyer or Dantonio. That alone will be enough for people to want to fire him in a few years.

He never won the Big East. He's not going to be able to win the Big Ten.

What do some of you expect?  Brady Hoke being grabed by a mob and "fired" by trebuchet in the direction of "Ohio?"

Firing a coach immediately seems tacky unless it involves serious ethical issues.  It was a holiday weekend and a few days make no difference.  In fact I would be fine lining up a candidate and then firing him after January 1st to save millions of dollars that could be better spent on just about anything.

Or he was just pissed off and acted like he "didnt care" about us since he never was offered the job. What did you expect him to do go cry in the corner because uofm didnt offer him? No he played it smart by getting a raise instead

I wanna believe in Les, but I'm scared of the considerable downside he has nearly as much as I like the pretty high, if time constrainted, upside.

WHAT IF, as some people clearly believe, Les is revealed one or two years into his Michigan tenure as a not great coach who succeeded at LSU simply because of the local talent situation and recruiting malfeasance.  Perhaps he declines, whether due to age or general inability to do more with less in the B1G..  Either way, if anything like that happens and he failed here (Brady Hoke style) after what would likely be 4-5 years...is there any coming back from that?  Maybe we should go for more of an innovator. Not saying I know who.
