CC: Non-Harbaugh guy you want

Submitted by Wolverine Devotee on

Who is the guy you want as the next head coach who is not named Harbaugh or Kevin Sumlin.

I've talked myself into it.....

Pros: Oregon offensive coordinator. Played QB at Nebraska. Would bring a dynamic offense. Sorta has Big 10 ties even though Nebraska was in the Big 12 at the time he played there. 39 years old so he's young enough but not too young. He's about the same age as Bo was when hired. Would be a great QB mentor. Would take the job for sure.

Cons: Has never been a head coach. Offense would have to transition a bit. Not a MEEEECHIGAN man.

Should he?  I understand his resume, but this is only his 2nd year as a coordinator.  I believe he was the QB coach when Kelly was there.

He's not the innovator of this offense; this is still Kelly's offense.

If we go the coordinator route, there are several that I would pick before Frost (Narduzzi, Smart, Morris).

Nuss and then watched his entire coaching career become tainted by this abysmal start, he would have been a top candidate. These first 5 games are such an outlier compared to the rest of his coaching stints, I just don't know what to make of it.

I don't know what to make of how badly Morris struggles while J.T. Barrett steps in and, while not lighting the world on fire, is managing to lead the team as effectively as you'd expect.

I just. Don't. Know.

I agree wholeheartedly.  That's one of the reasons why I have been hoping that Hoke gets fired mid season -- so that Nussmeier can get an audition and become a realistic coordinator candidate (if he suddenly makes the team look good, which is unlikely).  Nussmeier could have easily been the coach a a mid tier program the caliber of Boston College or Central Florida by now.

It doesn't mean he wouldn't leave for a HC position at a school like Michigan.  My only fear would be that he'd use it as a stepping stone and return to the south as soon as something opened up somewhere like Georgia, LSU, Alabama, etc.

Michigan is not a fucking stepping stone.

I'll break my special little opinons down into categories:

Pipe dreams:  MALZAHN

Unlikely at best:  Miles, Gundy

Probably unhireable at Michigan but would probably come:  LEACH (Arrrrrrr!)

Actually would probably come here:  CRAIG BOHL (Wyoming), DeRuyter (Fresno St.), Bobby Wilder (Old Dominion), and Doc Holliday (Marshall).  Yes, that is what he is called.

And by the way, ODU plays Marshall this weekend.  I will be watching as the appetizer to the Rutgers game.

Just because Brian likes him:  Stitt (I think he needs to be at least an OC at a larger program before he is hireable though).

Guys in caps are my faves, and with all things considered, my #1 target is Craig "BCS" Bohl.  Defense first guy, runs a Stanfordy system, reminds me of Bo in manner, etc.

I think he's the surest thing other than Jim Harbaugh, and I don't think it's a huge downside that he's old. He could come in, give 5 good years, get the program stabilized and back in its old place in the firmament, and then you can look around in 5-6 years when there might be a more slam dunk option out there.

The worst possible move is not, "aww man we hired a guy and he didn't stick around a long time." The worst possible move is "aww man we whiffed three hires in a row." That's why I think Brian's feeling on taking a shot with a guy like Frost is not a great idea.

The guy who pretty much gave state a rose bowl win because his team was running the ball on 3rd & 14... The last person I want for our next head coaching job would be David shaw. Think about it.......

I haven't heard if anyone has mentioned these guys, but here they are:

 Mark Hudspeth (Louisiana-Lafayette)

Matt Wells (Utah State)

Young coaches getting a lot of attention from the NFL. And I think that's what we are looking for.

Absolutely not to Dabo.  Do not want in any way, shape or form.  Clemson routinely recruits well and doesn't do jackshit on the national stage.  He's won the ACC once in 5 years (we won't count 2008 since hhe was interim) and for about half that time FSU wasn't very good.

Chad Morris -- kinda hesitant to go after a guy with only 4 years college experience, coming from HS.  Worked for Mahlzan but he also was HC before taking over Auburn.

Either way, have either of these guys been north of the Mason-Dixon?

I just don't see Butch Jones jumping to UM... He seems very tied to Tennessee right now... If he's going to be on the move, I think he stays at Tennessee for another two years and takes an NFL job.

Tim Murphy (Head Coach at Harvard). He is 57, which is a little old, but not ridiculous. His teams are always well prepared, and he is great at making in game adjustments. This would not be a sexy hire, but I think it would be a good one.

Strong

I hope Texas boosters, I mean athletic department, are crazy enough to fire him and we can hire him.

Seems like a no nonsense type guy (obviously kicking 8-9 guys off the team) and has a decent but limited record as head coach but has a track record as DC

come on... He's gotta be better than half the candidates Brian posted about this morning... All of you are talking about how we need a young, fiery motivator who knows how to win... Swinney has shown that he is a winner at Clemson, has an intense attitude, actually wears a headset, and is a proven recruiter.
