Submitted by Wolverine Devotee on

Who is the guy you want as the next head coach who is not named Harbaugh or Kevin Sumlin.

I've talked myself into it.....

Tom Brady could be our kliff Kingsbury, young attractive former qb coach.  Seems like Brady is pretty close to being done in the NFL since he said he would retire when he started to suck. Just bring him back and have woodson be the DC.  This is easy.

Right, I'm sure they're friends from the business world and love of football, and while I'm sure JJ has helped Pickens, and probably given money to OSU, I doubt he's throwing around the kind of money/has the kind of clout around OSU that Pickens has.  He's their Stephen Ross, plus a couple hundred million more.

who cares what there age is...just win...IF the program has positive momentum, we could hire a high caliber coach then. UM has everything in place except a winning atmosphere (last 10 years) to be a dominant school and an elite coaching job.

Idk how I feel about a dude who is 1-8 in a major rivalry ... then again Bedlam Series is the most lopsided rivalry I've ever seen...

84-17-7 in favor of the Sooners... seriously?

You would think the law of averages would make it even somewhat more even... Geeze even UM MSU isn't that lopsided... or even the Little Brown Jug...

IMO that is why what Gundy has done has been impressive. To recruit against OU is an uphill battle every year but he is doing a helluva job of taking leftover recruits in most instances and turning them into really good to great players. The last 4 years he only won the one game but it was a blowout and the 3 he lost were lost by a combined 18 points. I know a win is a win and loss is a loss but he is doing a great job for what he has to deal with.

No clue if we have any cahnce at him or if he is at all interested but he is the Falcon's OC and had a ton of success at Boise in the early 2000s and decent success at Arizona State before moving to the NFL. If not, then Harold Goodwinn, the Cardinals OC, Michigan Alum, brother of Jonathan Goodwin.

I think this hire is too important to roll the dice like that.  I think we need to be aggressive in hiring a proven coach.

If we have to pay more to get a Harbaugh or Miles or Gundy, then let's do it.

We've had too many average to below average years to gamble on someone who's unproven at the D1 level.

The advantages these 3 coaches had in helping them succeed is that Tressel had previously been an assistant at OSU, Malzahn had previously been an assistant at Auburn and Kelly served as OC for several years at OU before becoming head coach.

They weren't totally new to those respective universities.

Smaller program coaches that are truly excellent at what they do, should be able to replicate their success at a school with the resources and recruiting magnetism of a Michigan.  Tress would be exhibit A.

Pressure is a function of W/L - overall and against your rivals - with some concession for the state of the program at the start of the tenure.  Just win (or show improvement), and it's not an issue.  If winning, there is pressure to maintain success, but not PRESSURE like Hoke has felt the last two seasons.  The question isn't as much 'can they handle the pressure', as 'are they really excellent at what they do'.  Coaching a big program like UM really exposes that.

This was said about Les Miles after  Saban as well.  I think once you get past 2 years after the last coach retired, saying someone is just riding coattails stops being valid.  Shaw is now in his 4th year at Stanford.

That doesn't mean Shaw would be good at turning around a program which is what we need.  He has never had to do it.  Harbaugh did that.  But maintaining excellence he can do.  He is 11-2, 12-2, 11-3, and 3-1 probably headed to a 3ish loss season once again.  Also recruiting has improved under Shaw vs Harbaugh.

He would bore us to death as an advanced version of Ferentz/Carr but I could see him as a 'safe' pick by a conservative administration if he ever wanted to leave Stanford.

1. Craig Bohl

2. Jim McElwain

3. Pat Narduzzi

4. Butch Jones

I don't understand why people are so infatuated with Todd Graham. His team just gave up 62 to UCLA. Why not Jim Mora Jr?

edit: Jim Mora Jr also somewhere

I find it hard to believe/nor do I want to but a Narduzzi-type exchange wouldn't be the first time something like that happened with Michigan and where he's at now.

A reverse of this:

Fritz Crisler who coached Clarence Munn at Minnesota and then hired him as an assistant there, both came to Michigan in 1938. Munn left his assistant job at Michigan after 1945 and eventually took the job at MSU in 1947.

He went 71-16-3 at MSU. Their first coach who was worth anything and brought them into the Big Ten in 1953. They went from being a MAC-level program (in today's terms) to a Big Ten team under him.

Just kind of interesting.

If he didn't get to his dream job/alma mater Washington, what makes you think he will come to Michigan?

They were talking about Mora on the Herd this morning.. fairly nice comparison Cowherd made between UCLA and Michigan being very similar in their respective parts of the country.
