Submitted by Wolverine Devotee on

Who is the guy you want as the next head coach who is not named Harbaugh or Kevin Sumlin.

I've talked myself into it.....

And yet they still lost 5 games and gave up over 30 points 4 times and twice over 40.  The offense also came up small frequently against better teams as it tended to do at Michigan.  scored 21 in a 58-21 loss to asu, 17 against a bad washington state team, 13 against washington.  Yeah they beat Oregon and that is impressive but outside of that one game the season as a whole was the definition of mediocore.  I know someone will say mediocore looks great right now but people need to give it a rest with this rich rod is actually an amazing coach look at arizona bullshit.

He was terrible at Michigan, his best season through year 3 was Hokes worst, and he has been the definition of mediocore since he got to arizona.  Thats great and all but proves nothing that firing him was a bad idea, we just made the wrong hire after firing him.

last year.  Arizona lost to Washington at Washington, USC by a TD, UCLA by 5, WSU by 7 and only bad game was against ASU.  Arizona's record was the same as Michigan but plays in a much tougher conference and blew out Oregon.  Hoke hasn't done anything like it at all and plays in a worse conference.

On January 11, 2010, Del Rio was offered the head coaching job at USC, his alma mater.[11] The next day he denied receiving an offer from USC, stating that the offer was "manufactured".[12] Later that afternoon, he rebuffed USC officially, announcing that he would remain with the Jaguars at least through the duration of his current contract.[13]

On November 29, 2011, Del Rio was fired as Jacksonville's head coach. He left with a regular season record of 68–71 and a 1–2 record in two playoff appearances over his nine years.[9]

Looks like he was still under contract at the time.

Experience as an NFL linebacker, got the Panthers to a SB and only lost to the Brady/Belicheck dynsasty, long time NFL coaching experience, played at USC so he understands college football bluebood traditions.  I imagine he's itching to get back to a HC position.  The Broncos have had a stellar defense under his watch (they lost 9 opening day starters last year and sitll made it to the SB, held the Chargers and Patriots to 16 and 17 points and kept the Seahawks at bay with 8 points for a chunk of the game).

Drop 4.5 - 5 MM in his lap and see what he says.

Ooops.  Got him and Fox/Jaguars and Panthers mixed up.  Regardless, longtime coaching experience.

There are guys in the NFL who are doing well, so they wouldn't leave this year. But Chip Kelly or Bill O'Brien begin losing after 3-5 years and get fired, who knows? If the slim pickin's for Hoke's replacement force UM to take a flyer on a guy who ends up not panning out, the 2018-2019 "free agent market" may look a lot different, maybe better. Oklahoma, ND and Alabama all went through multiple short coaching stints before landing Stoops, Kelly and Saban.

That's exactly why getting the right guy for the job - this time - is so important.

We need to identify the best candidate and be aggressive.  If that means dropping $7M in Harbaugh's lap or $6M in Gundy's, or Richt's or Miles' lap, then so be it.  Whomever we determine is the best candidate.  Go get 'em.

Let's right this ship.

I don't understand the love for Tom Cable. Other than getting into a brawl with one of his coaches Tom Cable has been a complete nonentity in his career as a head coach.

A quote from Wiki on the illustrious Cable: "He succeeded fellow alumnus Chris Tormey, who had departed earlier in the month after five seasons for Nevada. At Idaho, Cable's first year, 2000, was his best, with a 5–6 record. He managed only six victories in the next three seasons, resulting in a disappointing record of 11–35 (.239), in four losing seasons.[2] Following the 2003 season, Cable became the first Idaho head football coach fired in 22 years; his four predecessors had all achieved success in Moscow and moved on. Cable then became the offensive coordinator at UCLA for two seasons (2004–2005) under head coach Karl Dorrell, a former colleague at Colorado."

Did you go to the Millen School of Management at Chutzpah University?

Well I want a proven coach who can come in right away and win and get better. Michigan has the money to go buy anyone they want including Saban. I want to win I don't care how much its going to cost at this point.
