CC: Nice Article re JH in the NY Times

Submitted by Abe Froman on

Not trying to stoke the fire and encourage debate, but thought the NY Times had a nice article about Harbaugh and his family today.  It's just a summary of recent events and doesn't add much in the way of new information, but it was well written and positive and if nothing else is a nice article about the recent success of umich alum.

Happy new year to the mgo-nation!

Given all the negative articles and crap out there, it was nice to see a news source focus on all things positive.

Worth the read unless you are at you limit of words like "coaching," "RR," and "harbaugh."

I am interested in seeing how the tone of the MGOBLOG boards change if there is a CC.

- will the generally pro-RR mob put down their pitchforks and torches w/ regards to JH?
- if JH (or someone else), will the boards group think turn to blind allegiance to that coach?
- will every stalled drive next year be due to the lack of RR's offensive vision?
- how will the new S&C coach ever fill the shoes of the legendary Barwis?
- will the players immediately put on 10% more body fat and add 1/10 sec to their 40 times?
- will the likely weak recruiting class be blamed on RR, DB or the new guy?

ok my tone is a bit snarky, but it will be interesting to see.

as was posted above, I think most are Mich fans first and foremost.  A coaching change will bring a honeymoon period and the normal issues that pop up with a D1 sports team will not be filtered through the RR lens.  A sense of calm and a quick start to next season will leave the last few years viewed in a harsher but increasingly distant perspective.  The focus is on the future and all this will be left behind.  Like I said, will be interesting to see.

Plus, Denard is staying no matter who is the coach (as I figure it)

The way I figure it, a coaching change provides an anti-honeymoon period, filled with stress about the first recruiting class, the new direction of the program and, most importantly to me, stress and sorry about whether or not Denard stays (which, in my estimation, he will not if Harbaugh comes in (or should not, if you ask me)).

I'm a Michigan fan first and foremost, but I will be:

  • Apprehensive about Jim Harbaugh. I don't know if he's the right guy, and I am not happy with the way he's spoken of his alma mater in the past.
  • Grateful for coach Rodriguez and all he's done for the program and the university.
  • Pissed off at the legion of uninformed RR bashers who will be vindicated and will rip on Rodriguez until the end of time. (Not all anti-RR posters are uninformed, and they have perfectly legitimate reasons for their stance, even if I disagree)
  • Root for Rodrgiuez wherever he goes next, and watch him have great success [insert Borat picture here] there.
  • Ambivalent when the success of the program in the couple of years to follow will be considered as if JH did it in spite of how poorly RR coached. I will be happy about the success but I will shake my head at the MSM and the fans who share this view.
  • Rooting as hard as I can for Harbaugh to succeed in coaching and hopefully not be an arrogant tool.

how  anybody could make a definate statement, like Denard is staying no matter who the coach is,at this point. The truth is nobody has any idea what players may or may not transfer if there was a change. I would have to think Denard has some degree of loyalty towards RR, considering he was one of the few coaches willing to give him a chance at QB. He may very well stay, but you can't make definate statement either way.

...a broad brush, especially for one of your first posts here.

  • The generally pro-RR crowd is generally pro-RR because he's the current Michigan HC.  If there's a change, they'll almost universally become pro-Jim/Bo.
  • The generally pro-RR crowd is convinced that given one more year, RichRod will lead this team to significant improvement in 2011 based on the return of a significant number of starters from an offense that was highly productive in 2010 and the likely improvement of a defense that was young and inexperienced before it got even more young and inexperienced due to the rash of season ending and season limiting injuries.
  • Of course group think will abound here. And there will be other places where other groupthink truths will reign, just as is the case now.

Thanks for playing.

I'll never be pro Harbaugh or as I call him Jimmy Jacka**.  I will still cheer for my my team and I'll watch whoever RR ends up coaching and cheer for them as well.  I'll also follow Denard and wonder what might have been.

To pull the plug on a coach who has had two full recruiting classes is ignorant in my mind and reeks of ND.  If there were talented RS seniors, seniors, and RS juniors all over the field my opinion would be different.  Unfortunately, there isn't a lot of talented upperclassman and that's on LC.

Your argument has the same fallacy, and assumes that people only like RR because they root for Michigan. I generally pro-RR but not necessarily because he's the Michigan head coach. I'm pro-RR because I think he's a good coach who has had a positive impact on the team and the players he has had the opportunity to work with. And I don't seem to be unique in that regard. But that doesn't mean I won't be pro-JH if a coaching change happens, and my opinion of him isn't strictly based on homer-ism.

will the generally pro-RR mob put down their pitchforks and torches w/ regards to JH?

As Shoe commented, RR IS the current head coach at the University of Michigan, and it is no surprise that a blog full of Michigan fans supports Michigan's head coach. If you actually read the blog, you will find that most of the comments don't bash JH per se, but are opposed to the idea of changing coaches at this time. JH would probably do a great job at Michigan, but now is not the time to blow up what RR is doing and find out. Nobody here really wants two more years of "transition." Even the JH supporters don't; as far as I can tell, they believe that there will be no negatives and that JH will find a way to win big next year.

if JH (or someone else), will the boards group think turn to blind allegiance to that coach?

Once again, RTFM. Or, in this case RTFB. You will find a diverse group here, with as many opinions as there are people. There is no real "groupthink" here; only a tacit agreement by most to follow Brian's guidelines for intelligent discourse. If you go through the FAQ, you will probably gain some valuable insight into what is usually "done" here and what usually isn't. Then, you will probably come to the conclusion that the "groupthink" you have imagined is really nothing more than a diverse group of posters trying to keep mgoblog the best college football blog out there. I obviously can't speak for anyone but myself and my own observations here, but I hope this helps answer some of your questions.

put down our pitch forks. Obviously we are more patient, more fair we gave him a chance at the begining and we will JH as well. And we will ALL be patient as we watch the spread offense that has been recruited over the past 3 years leave, while we transition back to a pro style team over the next 3 years with mediocre results. DB consider you have a pizza joint, for three years you have been working on getting the right ingredients setting up the place to look Italian, perfect vendors etc...first year wasnt good you were still learning, then second year better, third year definately better, your store was even open during holidays for extended season and at that point your decided that maybe pizza isn't such a good idea and then you wanted to do sushi, but you cant use the god damed pizza slicing thing to cut the god damn fish and shit and the people who delivered the sausage and cheese, cant find you fresh fish, what the fuck do you think the next three years are going to be like. Sure I will be patient.

I think people are mistaken if they think the "pro-RR" crowd will suddenly switch allegiance to whomever replaces him if he gets let go. Unlike some, I think Michigan is fallible, and would be making a huge mistake not to give RR another year. The school would be forever diminished in my eyes if he is not given a 4th year and a reasonable chance to develop his players. It will be a knee-jerk reaction to a nonsense coaching controversy stirred up by a lazy media and a (largely) shortsighted fanbase. I will feel this way regardless of how the replacement does.

And it follows the nice, gentle, fluffy, positive profile in Sports Illustrated last October.  And about a dozen simliar nice, gentle, fluffy, positive profiles of Harbaugh over the past 8 or 10 weeks.

When was the last time anyone saw one of those, in reference to Rich Rodriguez?

i agree that there is not parity in the press regarding harbaugh and RR.  RR does many tremendous things in ann arbor and the michigan community, and deserves strong credit for his work.

however, any time a umich alum receives a nice, gentle, fluffy, positive profile from a big-time news agency like the NYT, i think it's worth a read for mgo-nation.  only listed it as "CC" because i know many readers are harbaughed out right now and would prefer to skip such posts.

Artds,

I respectfully disagree. If that was how this board was run we would all just sit back and wait for the recruits to sign their letters of intent and not go through the scouting and Tom VH information before that happens. We all love the process. As disagreeable as this may be, its still part of the process.

seriously man, every single even slightly CC thread the first or second poster is like OMG WAAAAA LETS TALK ABOUT PEOPLE THAT PLAY FOR MICHIGAN.

it's kind of a big deal guys and it's kind of on everyones mind.  nobody's making you click the damn mouse onto these threads- go read a book if you're so pissed about it.  stop telling people not to post shit that is clearly relevant to Michigan football.

It's not like you have anything to get ready for the bowl game.  If this were a player posting this I'd be like "dawg you gots better things to do tonight right?"   but no- the majority of us are just getting drunk tonight and hanging out on MGoBlog (at least right now).  If you don't want to read it dont, but it's not like posting an article hurts our chances of winning the bowl game tomorrow.  I guess if you want to just focus on the bowl game lock yourself in a room and break down more MSU film.  Then call the coaches, tell them you've figured everything out and we'll win the game by a landslide.  CONGRATS.
