...by doing what wins football games (last night's Oregon debacle aside):
- Low TOs year after year
- Always top 5 in net punting
- Low penalties
To be a top 20 team in a major conference with the level of talent at his disposal is damned impressive.
Basically, they do the little things well and play mistake-free football. (Again, their game against Oregon last night was completely out of character.)

same as Hoke's. The only difference between the two is KW is more glib.

Whittingham doesn't have a losing career record and his team had the best record in the country in 2008. They also whipped Alabama's ass that year in the Sugar Bowl.

After the explosive offensive performance against Nebraska and OSU, I still can't believe how crappy we looked in the Sugar Bowl.
November 8th, 2014 at 12:24 PM ^
Except for the conference title and 13-0 season their resumes are about the same.
what...
November 8th, 2014 at 12:24 PM ^
He is 82-41 overall including 7-1 in bowls. He also has an undefeated season that includes beating UM at UM and whipping Bama in the Sugar Bowl. Oh and he just curbstomped Hoke at the Big House.
How is this the same as 47-50??
November 8th, 2014 at 2:11 PM ^
If "about the same" means "significantly better than" in your strange world, then you're right.
Whittingham is in his 10th full season, going 81-41 and winning 6 of 7 bowl games, including a 31-17 upset beatdown of heavily-favored 12-1 #4 Alabama.
Hoke is in his 12th season, going 77-67 and winning 2 of 5 bowl games, including a 23-20 OT squeaker over underdog #17 VT.
This doesn't mean I think it's remotely likely that Wittingham would come here, though.

Compelling argument
November 8th, 2014 at 1:51 PM ^
I'm not trying to put forth an opposing argument. Whittingham just ain't happening, in my opinion.

I've made statistical arguments for him before, but go ahead and act exactly like your avatar.

and we really don't need a 3rd or 4th CC: Kyle Wittingham thread. We get it. He is a good coach. Posting is again doesn't get Michigan one iota closer to ever hiring him.

I'm just waiting for the CC: Brady Hoke thread, then we know we've hit the nadir of this activity.

Pretty sure we did have one briefly that the mods deleted

His teams are physically and mentally tough that also run a spread.
The problem is that he has no experience in the Midwest and is a Mormon. That makes him an unlikely HC candidate.

Just like Gary Andersen before he took the Wisconsin job.

They went 9-4 last season. So all and all not too bad.

But he went from the Mountain West and a $600K salary. Whittingham has less reason to leave. I'm not in the camp that thinks name coaches aren't going to be willing to come here, but Whittingham is one I'm skeptical about.

I think Whitt is a good coach, but I don't think he has any plans to leave Salt Lake City.

November 8th, 2014 at 1:00 PM ^
If Whitt was named as Michigan's coach, it would make the rivalry with OSU very interesting, seeing as Whitt was the Def Coordinator for Urban Meyer at Utah, and when Urban left Whitt took over as Head Coach.
Having said that, I would still rather have a Harbaugh.
November 8th, 2014 at 1:13 PM ^
If he had connections to the Midwest and was not Mormon* he would in the "A" candidate category.Plus, I don't know if he would want to leave
*I don't care if he is Mormon, Muslim, or Zoroastrian. I do think, however, that some people would.
November 8th, 2014 at 2:13 PM ^
Hell no, I draw the line at Zoroaster.
November 8th, 2014 at 7:14 PM ^
I don't care what religion he is, nor do I think anyone else should care.
November 8th, 2014 at 1:11 PM ^
He's shown that he can win, and his players always seem prepared. Not to beat a dead horse, but he's completed a perfect season, beaten 'Bama in a bowl game...I'll take him. Then again, if Bob Stoops were available, I think I'd prefer Bob. Ability to recruit the midwest through his Ohio high school contacts, and high school contacts in Texas and Oklahoma...yeah, sign me up for Stoops.
But yes, I'd welcome Mr. Whittingham with open arms.
November 8th, 2014 at 1:27 PM ^
Not saying it would necessarily be bad but I can't see the point in getting excited about a guy who has been at the same place for 20 years. Why leave for a school with zero ties?

He's a good coach. But why would a devout Mormon living in Utah, now coaching in the Pac-12, move 2,000 miles away to a school at which he has no connection whatsoever?
November 8th, 2014 at 1:53 PM ^
November 8th, 2014 at 2:01 PM ^
IMO he would be a really good plan B hire.
I respect the way he's continued to build Utah's program. When they joined the PAC Utah didn't have the athletes/size to compete every week against better competition - he's upgraded their talent level and the results are showing.
He seems like a high-integrity, no cheating type, and he's been willing to adapt and make some interesting coaching hires.
While Utah is in a major conference, Michigan would be a big career step up. Utah is basically Rutgers - a school that's excited to finally be playing with the big boys (admittedly with more success in recent years). I think he would have to seriously consider an offer to coach Michigan.

still pathetic how bad we looked against them that game.. Their offense was horrific, and ours was even worse.. truly sad
November 8th, 2014 at 2:07 PM ^
They actually sustained some drives(unlike Michigan). They also lost their starting QB for part of the first half.
