Unsolicited piece of advice from an old man: Don't limit yourself to one candidate. Harbaugh might not want us, like that bitch Kate Beckinsale who refuses to sleep with me. Also, don't ever be too sure that the one you want is the one you need. Harbaugh could be another Coach Rod or another Brady Hoke. I wanted Hoke, just like I wanted my ex-wife, who -- like Hoke -- had no respect for my body.

good advice. more good advice. everything we hear is going to be BS while people are still under contract. We'll probably learn  the truth from  some unverifiable rumor that suddenly starts blowing alot of smoke.

What else was Harbaugh going to say?

Agreed. Maybe he was approached and maybe he wasn't before Hoke was hired (rumors, rumors, and more rumors on that front), but if he or his brother truly don't want to come back to college or Michigan specifically then fine, if they don't want us why on earth would we want them? That's not to say they aren't good coaches and wouldn't be great for Michigan, but just, if your heart isn't in it then that's just not what Michigan needs.

You are a former player am I correct? I can totally see why you felt that way. I was "meh" with the hire, but after listening to his press conference, I was on board and thought he was going to succeed here. Besides the obvious, where do you think he went wrong? His cumulative pre-Michigan record aside, I find it hard to think that someone that has had head coaching gigs and was a position coach here, during the NC run no less, would be totally lost and in over his head. I personally think Brandon's meddling sure doesn't help matters any.

FWIW the rest of the interview contains a more thorough statement of support and a more obvious question dodge

"“I don’t really know why [the rumors have started],” Harbaugh said. “Brady Hoke is a guy that we all believe in. The Harbaughs believe in Brady Hoke. He’s a great coach.

"He has done it everywhere he’s ever been. He believes in Michigan. I believe in what they’re doing there, and they’re going to get it turned around. The team should be galvanized right now, and I would expect them to come out like a bunch of wounded lions and go to work, because they love Brady and they love those coaches, and they just have to go.""

Thank you to Humen for posting the rest of the exchange--I had not taken the time to click through, and I agree it sounds far, far more positive than the snippet shared by the OP.

The reason it sounds so much more positive is that Harbaugh is spinning it so hard.  Of course, it could mean simply that he knows how to say the right thing.  And he did say the right thing, whether he considers Michigan an option or no.

But those media-byte answers where everything is so gently phrased and inoffensive to all suggest more than mere media savvy.  If you're completely uninterested in the job, you can say that openly--while at the same time guarding Hoke's flank.

That Harbaugh did not do that suggests a man who is keeping his options open.

"I am not going to be the person to get my friend fired, nor will I say anything at all negative about him.  Ask me again once he's been fired, not at all due to anything I said."

...who is currently under contract will give a straight answer to these kinds of questions?

"Coach Harbaugh, what do you think of the possibility of going to Michigan?"

"Well, I'm ready to abandon my current job for that one as soon as they offer me enough money to make it worth my while."

Imagine how that would go down...

What do you expect him to say?

"Hell yeah I love Michigan! Hope I get the offer!"

He's not saying anything, and honestly, if the Ravens continue to do well this season with everything that's going on, I doubt he's going anywhere.
