CC: Jan4 WWL coverage on JH and Michigan. UPDATE II

Submitted by GunnersApe on

The last couple of days I've been putting theses ESSPENN bullets about UM/CC/JH/BH, due to the fact that I have a TV in my office and watch sport shows all day while I work (I know tough life). I will update as the day progresses. IMHO (means nothing) I'm in the agent "disinformation" camp and any "JH is leaning" talk is a money grab.

0722est Mike & Mike

Dick Vitale bullets

-Doesn't think JH fits in the Pros & is a college guy.

-If Bo was alive he would be at UM on the sidelines.

-If I talked to him I would tell him to stay in college.

-T. Izzo made the right choice to stay in college.

-I didn't listen to Jimmy V and failed in pros.

-RR should go to Pitt.

It Dicky V so he's just talking but he inline w/ Lou Holtz (yesterday) on the matter.

0735est SportsCenter

John Clayton bullets on NFL CC

-If SF cannot get JH the will go the Assistant route.

-Denver will wait till J. Elway get back to start a search(n/m of JH).

0905est Mike & Mike

M. Greenberg on breaking to him bullets

-Just broke to him about the Freep article on JH not coming to AA and would stay at Stanford or go pro(wow he's late to the party)

-gave his opinion and said Stanford=Michigan but M got more history(talkers gotta talk)

0912est SportsCenter

Chris Mortensen bullets

-Freep report/ that is not the absolute but that is the buzz from last night/this morning.

-talks about sibling rivalry with brother and NFL.

0917est Mike & Mike

John Clayton bullets

-thought Miami was in the mix but it dying b/c Sparano is staying.

-Two options S.F. but they don't have the structure he looking for and Denver b/c John Elway

-Is Hearing 3mil at Stanford 4mil at UM.

Freep is been brought up since 0900est ,more will come later I'm sure and I'll update once Schefter wakes up. I do not have access to NFL network so any help is appreciated.

UPDATE I

0947 Mike & Mike

Adam Schefter Tweet

-(MWW6t7 beat M&M him by 4min) Hugh Jackson to interview at S.F.

Todd McShay

-think Luck and JH are moving on.

UPDATE II

1002est 1st & 10

Amani Toomer

-JH not ready for NFL

-JH can't skirt the press like he did last night.

-It's one thing to coach college kids vs. Pros.

-Wanted JH to AA (Buckeye lover Jay Crawford was loving this)

Skip Bayless

-jumped up on the table and started throwing feces at everyone. (I kid, I kid)

-Compare JH to Jimmy Johnson when he was at the "U" and said he will go the same route and recorded as J.J.

Thank you for the update service.  Keep up the good work.  Oh, and can you just asplode the entire NFL for about a week until JH moves into an office in Schembechler?

Well even though this is getting annoying with all of the rumors and information flying around. I thank you for putting some of it in one thread. Please update us if something interesting arises.

Is it weird that my knee jerk reaction was "Come on Pizza Boy, we can do better than that?".  Given our options seem to be binary right now: JH or DOOM (of some degree aka Hoke/The Hat) start checking the couches for change and get the boosters on the phone.

We're a far cry from when Carr pulled down 1.5 million.

Bo had more power than the President of this Institution.  My dad was here when Bo was in his prime and that man was worshipped like a God.  Any pissing match between Bo and the Admins would have resulted in a student mob storming the Admin office with tar and feathers at the ready.

Right, I knew about the Rodney rule but just thought it was interesting because I thought they said they were going give Lewis an interview already which would satisfy the NFL as far as minority interviews are concerned. If they had their guy locked up there would be no reason to interview another candidate. Just speculation on my part but hey, at least I didn't start another thread.

I would really NOT want to see him come here no matter what he does. If he's not the John Elway of the Sidelines w/in six months, this town will eat him alive. They measure everyone against Elway and anyone who doesn't fit the mold is immediately discarded. Then, of course, they obsess about everyone who they discard. It's a weird town. I would absolutely loathe it if he opted for the Broncos.

It annoys me to no end that The Freep and Rosend00sh are getting all this PR (regardless of whether their scoop turns out to be meaningful).  Any PR is sometimes good PR.

Aside: Wouldn't it be awesome if Brandon used his people to purposely mislead Rosey?  A guy can dream, anyway.

"I believe culture drives performance, and who you hire and how you hire them has a great impact on the overall high-performance nature of your organization.  The positive energy you create in any organization is going to manifest itself in results.  How do we create a stronger, more trusting, high-performing culture?"

but I have been skeptical of his abilities since he came on. That is natural though, since he has no track record for ebing an AD. I think people who have had blind faith in the man since he was hired are a little dilusional to be honest.

I will say this though, my skepticism has not been put to rest with his actions since being hired. I suppose I am with you and think he could do himself a favor in that category by pulling Harbaugh. For me though, the jury is still very much out on one DB.

For me, it's not blind faith.  It's trust that he has facts that we don't and is better informed to make a decision.  Has he does things, that made me shake my head, sure.  I will reserve judgement until he has made a decision.  Right now, on the surface, this seems like a mess, who knows if this is his master plan to get his guy in here.

One thing that I can't stand is when people say:

"Bo would never allow . . . "

"Bo would never fire RR . . ."

"Bo would have never hired RR . . ."

"If Bo were here . . ."

Stop.  Bo coached in a different era.  We don't know what Bo would do or not do in this situation.  I love Bo as much as anyone, and I think that looking to his ideals and the way that he managed and coached his team is nothing but good, but none of us know what he would or would not do in any situation.

DB is cool customer  he knows that we need Jimmy back. He knows that if we lose JH it will be a huge blow to the school, fans etc.

He needs to get this to build up Michigan again and we can all agree right now everyone else looks at us like we are crap.

If it takes 4 mil a year I guess lets do this and get back to winning.

... posted yesterday in the CC post-o-rama.

I think it will take at least top 5 money to get JH in AA.  It may not be sufficient, but would, IMHO, be necessary.

The Top 5 is rounded out by Damn Fine Les Miles at $3.9 million per.  So you at least got to put Jammin' Jimmy to the $4 million level.

Thanks for posting this.

At this point, I find the coverage of this issue to be insane - every single talking head has said at least once that (1) Harbaugh will come to Michigan, and (2) Harbaugh will go to the NFL.  Nobody knows anything at this point, so the reporters are trying to read the faintest of signs when there may be none out there.

A smart man once told me that DB is a very smart man.  That being said, he should have recognized a month ago:

1)  RR was not working;

2)  JH is the best and really only option to replace him because he is a good coach and can unify the program.  The second point is just as important as the first point because the program is divided right now and has been for three years;

3)  There was no real reason to wait a month to hire JH unless JH asked to coach in the bowl game because it (i) hurt recruiting, and (ii) increased the competition of getting JH from the NFL openings.

So a backdoor deal should have been struck a month ago and JH will be announced as head coach on Wednesday.

If that doesn't happen, David Brandon should go back to making pizza that tastes like cardboard because he clearly has no idea on what he is doing and is a bigger idiot than Bill Martin who got us into this mess.  If he can't get JH, Brandon might as well have announced that RR was his man a month ago and rode the horse another year.  Handling this the way he has without having JH in the bag makes no sense otherwise.

and they had a "handshake deal", but now JH sees that the 49ers will sell their kids to get JH (money, the GM he wants, a $100K toilet...)?

Then you may look at it as DB got played, JH lied, or that it was only a "handshake" deal, JH had every intention of coming to UM, but at the last minute somebody gave him the world (the amount of which nobody expected).

If it ever comes out that JH backed out on a gentlemans agreement with DB, then JH better avoid ever setting foot on campus again. I really want JH but I'm starting to have mixed feelings. Assuming we're not being cheap and DB is offering him 4+ million and control over the program it's really in bad taste if he's trying to play up NFL rumors for a few extra bucks. If for some dumb reason DB is low balling the salary then I can understand fighting with him, but if Michigan needs you and is offering you an above average salary, you get your ass to campus if you truly bleed maize and blue.

What if the 49ers are willing to offer Shanahan money ($7 million a year) and significant control? Michigan isn't going to match that, and $3 million a year for 4-5 years ($12 to $15 million total) is a lot of money to turn down, regardless of what you bleed.

UAUM

At some point, money is no object and it becomes about what you truly want and other aspects of the job.  Really, what's the difference between having $3.5 million per year or $7 million.  Either way you can buy ANYTHING YOU WANT, pretty much for life.

And that is whyI think Michigan is in a better position.  Michigan is a storied institution that JH could bring back from the dark ages.  He would be a hero.  He could stay as long as he was reasonably competitive.  Plus, the college athletes are much easier to coach - they don't have the $$ yet, so they're still willing to work hard to get ahead.  Pro athletes are already there and not as easily motivated.  Most importantly, there's no such thing as playing for the "pride" of your team in the NFL - it's just another form of adult entertainment.  Nobody ever graduated from the 49ers or the Patriots.  People care about universities because they attended and contributed to them, because they stand for ideals, create new wonderful thing, and therefore, have a connection to them.

Come on Jimmy!

that money isn't likely the major motivation, but it can't be ignored.  Besides, one thing money equates to is bragging rights.  My take on Harbaugh is that he's very proud and won't take the Michigan job at a discount so there may be a need to overpay from that perspective.  (BTW, let's not forget that $4 million goes a lot further in Michigan than in the Bay Area so that might help if dollars are relevant.)

The ONLY way I'm comfortable with us keeping RR is if we hire a great D-coordinator who can recruit well and he gets free-rein over the Defense. RR can have the rest of the team.
