CC: Impact on other schools

Submitted by The_Mad Hatter on

I've been thinking about the impact our coaching hire will have on other schools,

Assume for a moment that we're going after the coach at another blue blood university.  How does the timing of our search and eventual hire impact that school?  Does their recruiting class tank?  Who do they get to replace the outgoing coach, especially if we're taking early January?

Are there succession plans in place to promote an assistant?  Or do they go out into the market and try to poach another successful coach like we did?

Just some things to think about while we're all busy F5ing today.

It all depends on the swim lane charts.  I've mapped them all out in my new "Coaching Search 2014"  binder.

If we end up hiring Mullen, I think Mississippi State will have a hard time replacing him with another comparable coach.  For Stoops it will probably be easier.  Hey, Schiano's available.  I'm sure he'd be a great cultural fit at either of those schools.

I lived in New Orleans for 6 years and still talk to a lot of my friends there. When we first started looking for a coach about a third of them were freaking out that we would hire Miles and a third were cheering for joy that we would take Miles off their hands and the last third were sure that Miles was staying put. Now that they have seen the timetable the AD is following and figureing that UofM is holding out for Harbaugh as long as possible, they are all freaked out that if we do hire Miles away, it will be way too late in the game to get a decent replacement this year.

They are asking each other all the same questions you are asking.

I spent my years down there watching the Tigers win game after game. WIth the locals grumbling about how they didn't like how the team won and they wished Miles gone. Some of the complaints were justified, about clock management. But most were similar to the Carr complaints and didn't have much behind them. I told them numerous times, be careful what you wish for...

I wouldn't say it's the majority, but there's a big contingency of people in the New Orleans / Baton Rouge area that aren't happy about winning in a boring fashion (short yardage running and grinding time off the clock). They don't believe that all those wins matter if you can't beat Alabama and 3 yards in a cloud of dust isn't going to get it done. They also grumble about qb development and decision making.

I'm sure as a Michigan fan, some of these complaints sound familiar.

Yep I think the guy above me nailed it the internet tough guys will talk about how much they hate him, but if he was on his way out they would beg him to stay. Also winning is most important, but I like coaches with some character. Hoke was kind of a boring guy in his pressers and interviews.

No need to ban me.  If you guys think Im messing with WD then I'l just create a new Avatar and use that one I guess.  I just though it woule be cool to honor the most influential poster on this board.  The guy who had a hand in getting Brandon fired and creating change at Michigan and only at 19!

If I was a troll I'd already have Posted some Hello: Schiano crap or some post.  Otherwise what's the point? If there is a rule against being to similar to another poster let me know and I'll change it.

I always took it to mean coaching carousel because I feel like we've used the CC header before for coaching news on other schools, not just posts that are profiles of specific candidates. The more I use it, and the longer the process drags out, the more fitting I think the term becomes.

It technically stands for "Coaching Change", but at this point, carousel, candidates....I don't think anyone cares anymore. It was a tag that was used primarily as a joke but also as an informal content separation tool back in early 2011 when we were on the market for a coach then. Of course, with this search apparently being designed to take time, I suspect "CC" will reach into the ranks of the NAIA just to pass the time now until we make a hire.
