And college guys are saying he'd be great for Michigan. Of course the NFL guys want him in Oakland. There will be more articles like this until Jim makes his decision.

Of course, since we all keep clicking on them and linking them. Mgoblog is basically the market for this drivel. I think we'd all do well to take a walk, and try not to think about it until there is real news, which is probably still 10 days away. Do some work, people. It's Thursday afternoon. What the hell.

I used to respect the work of Rapoport and Schefler. Thats gone now, these guys are proving to be so lazy when it comes to covering a major story.

Do your homework dumbfucks.

I really, really, really don't understand bashing writers opinions on what situation is best for Harbaugh.  Is our fanbase really so insecure that a pure opinion piece is threatening?

Grow up, people.

Fine. They're not arguing what's best for Harbaugh. They are spewing about what they think is best for Harbaugh, which is, in fact, what's best for the NFL, and stating it as irrefutable fact. It has nothing to do with Harbaugh. It has everything to do with the NFL.

Who would EVER leave the NFL willingly when it is the greatest thing ever? You dare question the NFL?

You do understand the difference between opinion pieces - aka columns - and news reports, right?  The author is saying what HE THINKS IS BEST FOR HARBAUGH.  Look at how many times the author uses "I" - "I think" - "I don't see it".   When you communicate facts, you don't start with "I think".

He's not selling it as what Harbaugh thinks is best for Harbaugh.  Only Jim himself can answer that.  That doesn't stop this author from having an opinion, just like you have an opinion that Michigan is best for Harbaugh.

I don't know if there is any NFL guy who has taken the stance that Michigan makes more sense.  I just don't read enough of them to know.  But for arguments sake, lets say they are all towing the company line and not a single one thinks Michigan is a better destination - how is that any different than Michigan people all towing the "university line"?  Where are the dissenting opinions on this site?

I think the answer is people form opinions based on what they are passionate about.  NFL guys truly believe, in my opinion, that the NFL offers more than college.  Michigan fans and "insiders" all believe that Michigan offers way more than the NFL.

Misreporting facts is unforgiveable.  But I just can't pile on these opinion writers, even if they are towing the NFL line, just because we do the exact same thing on the other side.

what the Michigan writers have said. They may all want Harbaugh to come back, but everyone that I've read has allowed for the possibilty that he might not and have given reasons he might prefer to stay in the NFL. There's been a fair amount of disagreement among them about how likely he is to return. The common theme is that whether he comes depends on what's most important to him.

I think by virtue of writing columns on the NFL being a better fit than Michigan for Harbaugh they are admitting their is some possibility that Michigan could indeed happen, no?  If they didn't think it was even a possibility I doubt they'd pen columns espousing the plusses of staying in the pros....

there was zero chance he would even consider Michigan to saying he shouldn't.. Grudgingly, I suspect, because the news of the contract offer made their previous stance hard for anyone to believe. Again, this reads like the only opinion they're allowed to express at NFL.com.

This shouldn't be a surprise. Would anyone expect to find unbiased opinions on mgolue.com?

There are different kinds of opinions - there are simple matters of preference, which are precisely that.  If the article said "Jim Harbaugh should coach the Raiders, because that would make me happy", well I suppose I can't refute that.  I can't tell you what to feel.  But then there are opinions that are actually predictions, which must be supported by arguments.  This is exactly one of those, because the article is trying to deduce what's important to JH and predict what he wants and what he will do.  And the logic pillars on which this prediction is based can be fairly subjected to scrutiny.  So I'll point out what I think are the pillars in this piece.

WHY JIM HARBAUGH WANTS TO COACH THE RAIDERS (a more accurate title)

  1. He's already coached in college.
RESPONSE: So nobody returns to something they like once they've done it before?  If JH likes coaching college better (unknown), then he'll return to it.  He's not going to say "well that was the best thing ever, but it's over and I can't go back now." YES YOU CAN (cue Matthew McConaughey).
  2. The Super Bowl is a better prize than a national championship or "convincing 17 year olds to live in Ann Arbor."
    RESPONSE:
This might be true.  It's certainly the highest level of football, I can't argue  with that.  But the amount of personal fulfillment it would bring to JH?  I do not know.
  3. He wants a "challenge," and the Raiders represent that.
    RESPONSE:
I think both the Wolverines and Raiders are struggling squads, so he can find a challenge either place.
  4. Oakalnd "already has the tools to be successful."
    RESPONSE:
Wait, I thought you just said they were a mess?  Didn'd he want a challenge?
  5. JH wants to be paid "top dollar."
    RESPONSE:
Uhhh $48 million?  Money is no longer an issue, I don't even know why they tried to make it one.
  6. JH wants autonomy.
    RESPONSE:
And you think he'll find more autonomy in an NFL front office than as the living God-King of Ann Arbor?
  7. Wife wants to live in the Bay Area.
    RESPONSE:
I feel like we've talked about this on the blog before, but I don't know much about this one.
  8. Other NFL teams are "too chaotic."
    RESPONSE:
Firstly, I thought he wanted a challenge?  Secondly, eliminating other NFL teams strengthens Oakland's position only if UM is already off the board.  If it's not, then it improves both of their probabilities.

In conclusion, I think the arguments supporting the article's predictions about Jim Harbaugh's opinions are weak and contradictory.  That's a totally fair assessment, and I haven't picked on the article for any preferences at all.

NFL writers writing for NFL.com and appearing on NFL Network talking about an NFL coach and writing about how this NFL guy should stay in the NFL.

Yeah certainly no hidden agenda there.

are starting to get downright nasty and rude.

That "major scoop" was known for a week or two if you were reading mgoblog.

Given this stream of stories, I'm not quite sure what to make of the offer or whether Harbaugh has turned it down or accepted it (and I believe that he's made up his mind already, FWIW).

I do know that regular "reporters" of any type do not like to be scooped and made a fool of by Cheetos-eating, pajama-wearing bloggers...and Brian has done just that with this story.

Whether Harbaugh coms to AA or not, Brian is one of the big winners in this saga and the NFL guys don't like it.

and supporters who think NFL football is the greatest sport ever created and that any coach who is anything should aspire to be in the League.  At least in my case, I much prefer college football.  And there are coaches who do much better in and prefer that sports environment.  But, the people who are recommending Harbaugh to stay in the NFL are mostly self-serving people who are directly or indirectly being paid money from the NFL.  The NFL media complex sticks together because the League is where they get their pay from.

I'm almost prepared to ignore the NFL even more than I do now. I don't know how you decrease from a 0% investment but I will find a way. Actively tell others to stop watching the NFL?

The fact that NFL.com is posting its opinon about whether Jim Harbaugh should coach the Raiders (for whatever biased reasons people are coming up with) has exactly zero newsworhtiness as to whether Jim Harbaugh is going to accept Michigan's offer to coach Michigan.

I think the NFL doesn't realize how lucky Jim Harbaugh was to go to the 49ers. In reading the recent Grantland article, the thing that struck me most was how the tactics that Harbaugh uses are more geared towards college players. Harbaugh is a very controlling guy and he's lucky that he went to the 49ers and not another team, because the players bought in (at least for a bit). Think of how his NFL career might have been if he'd been in Tampa Bay, where the players couldn't stand the controlling Greg Schiano. Part of it probably is that Harbaugh is more likable than Schiano, but he's really rolling the dice if he goes to another NFL team. He should come to Michigan where he's appreciated.

I disagree that Jim Harbaugh was lucky with San Fran.

You do not reach his level of success at every stop unless you have a very refined ability to analyze and react swifter than the majority of humans.

I believe he is smart enough and flexible enough to assess and suit his approach to the situation.

He is a rare talent with a rare ability to see through the shit that many cannot.

He will win wherever he goes.

He knows how to assess, assemble, adjust, motivate and get humans to run through walls for him because he genuinely cares about them.

If Michigan gets Jim Harbaugh, make no mistake, they are getting the best of the best.

Go Blue.

Unlike college, you can't pick your players and they can't pick you. While I agree that he's a great talent, I'm doubtful that his approach works on everyone. On another team, he maybe stuck with a team which has more guys he can't reach or who don't like his style. Maybe he gets the control to make decisions that allows him to cut guys, maybe he doesn't, but he gets that In college by recruiting who he wants. Some players in the NFL more central to the franchise than in college (think Tom Brady, Andrew Luck, Cam Newton, etc), and if you don't win them over, you might not succeed. Same in college, but there guys turn over quick.

Thing that scares me about Oakland is that they're desperate.  And they might be willing to literally hand Harbaugh the keys. Only other guy with that much power in the NFL is Belichick.
